+159 Whoever made the Tinder interests selections is beyond dumb. amirite?

by Anonymous 8 months ago

What aggravates me the most is that they're not in alphabetical order so you have to scroll endlessly to find yours.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Driving those engagement numbers up, baby!

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Except I don't think that makes sense in this context. You're already using the feature, so you've ticked the box. There's no ads in this section. If anything, it would drive down engagement because you would be spending more time fiddling with creating your profile and less time swiping. Less time swiping means less chance you run out of swipes, which means less chances someone buys extra swipes.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

They make you buy swipes now?? God, Tinder just gets worse every year.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Ffs not everything is some elaborate evil design. Sometimes devs just get lazy in unnoticed areas

by Anonymous 8 months ago

As a fellow dev myself, its usually a one liner for such a thing

by Anonymous 8 months ago

>Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

If a company is structured around monetizing human loneliness I'm assuming malice is built i to every single aspect of it's design

by Anonymous 8 months ago

It's also probably nothing to do with a dev. Most devs don't get much say in anything except whether or not it's possible to do and how long it will take. The actual decision-making is someone else's job 99% of the time

by Anonymous 8 months ago

No, no. They want engagements to stay down so you come back to the app /s

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Sorting has time complexity O(n log n), which is too much computing resource for Tinder to handle. Don't you think about the poor little computer chips that have to do those intensive tasks of sorting?

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I imagine they're talking about people who live in like Friday Night Lights small towns.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Texas forever

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Oh yea it's under Gym Chess, you need to scroll down bit further

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I don't know...finding out someone over 18 is interested in high school sports can be very useful information. I know exactly who to swipe left

by Anonymous 8 months ago

It's an american thing i think, high school/college games are really popular there especially in smaller towns.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

For anyone over 18 and out of high school they are not popular outside of Texas.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Damn it, Hollywood lied to me again!

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I will say college sports are incredibly popular and rival professional sports, but the only folks attending high school games are high schoolers and their parents.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Highschool sports are still a big thing in rural areas where there's nothing else to do. Source: live in a rural area where there is nothing else to do.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

You are totally right, but I wouldn't say they are popular broadly.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Very reliable source that!

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Makes sense, you definitely hear more about college football than hs.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Nah this guy just doesnt know what he's talking about. Mater Dei in California plays in a 9000 seat stadium. St. john Bosco 500k. Bishop Gorman in LV also 5k. I can name a bunch more but i think you get the point. High school sports is very big outside of texas. Hell should i list basketball teams like Chino hills, Finlay prep IMG academy and Montverde Academy who have celebrities attend games and sold out crowds. All in all if a high school is pumping out D1 Talent then people will fill out the games.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

This dude is just wrong.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

You were right lol, high school football is huge in small towns especially in the south/midwest.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

This is just false, there are lots of places across the US that has levels of Friday Night Light fanaticism

by Anonymous 8 months ago

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Not true

by Anonymous 8 months ago

College yes but highschool not as much. Maybe some places if the team is doing really well but I wouldn't expect it to be something people put as an interest.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Only in small towns. Nobody in a city is wasting their weekend watching high school football. They have options and taste.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

With the exception of two explanations: "I have relatives in high school who does *x* sport," and "I am working as a coach for high school sports."

by Anonymous 8 months ago

And "I am 18 and in high school".

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I was thinking the same exact thing… maybe the Tinder devs are actually genius

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Developers don't choose the profile options. That'd be product managers

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I think its more that they know a lot of their users are under 18

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Small towns have culture surrounding hs sports. You're also discounting older daters who have children in hs playing sports

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I don't think the person you're responding to is discounting that at all, just saying they'd swipe left on those people.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

why not just have "sports" then? Seems weirdly specific. I doubt without tinder people were showing up to dates and proclaiming their love for HS sports over starters.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Still kinda weird to put HS sports as an interest in that scenario. They're there to support their kids, not because the Northborough JV Tennis squad looks pretty strong this year.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Also, while US is a big market for Tinder, in many places around the globe you graduate secondary school older than 18.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Can't people be 18 and still in hs sports? Ik it's not for long but it's possible

by Anonymous 8 months ago

You're saying you're not into parents who are supportive of their children?

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I wouldn't want to date a parent unless I had kids of my own. Unless they swept me off my feet in some fairytale romance love at first sight kind of thing, but that aint tinder.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

No, thats more of a " This is a mom/dad who's responsible " thing then an interest imo.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I'm guessing most people on tinder arent old enough to want to date people with high school aged kids...

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Eh, I'm 38 and Tinder is tons of single moms. But even then saying your interest is HS Football is kind of weird and I'm a huge football guy.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Yeah. Someone into high school sports spends their Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights watching high school sports instead of doing anything else. That said, dating profiles are supposed to narrow the playing field, not broaden it. If you're looking for a real relationship, you're looking for that one person you want to spend time with right now so putting things that specific will filter out a ton of people that you would have ended up realizing later on that it wouldn't be a fit.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Maybe they're a coach? Only thing that makes sense

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I was really annoyed when they didn't have interested such as: Shooting, Hunting, Fishing or Archery. But they did have 18 different political viewpoints as interests.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

What about '90s kid'? That's not an interest, it's an age group. And your age is already shown in your profile, so it's completely redundant.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Okay but it's pretty important that I know how many episodes of Reboot someone has seen before I date them.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Back when I used the app I've literally seen someone born in 2000/2001 using this. Got a good laugh out of me.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

They don't have Crafts or sewing on there but they sure do have Beach tennis, Pig Roast, Bodyjam, Roblox, and Vinyasa so that's great.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

isn't crafts similar to DIY?

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Tinder is hilarious

by Anonymous 8 months ago

> Yet, for something as simple as chess, they have no option for. That just means that nobody wants to date someone interested in chess.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

*sad Magnus Carlsen noises*

by Anonymous 8 months ago

butt the goal of tinder and chess is literally the same

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Regicide is the goal of *tinder!?* No wonder I was getting it all wrong.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

You got to mate the king

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Checks out

by Anonymous 8 months ago

To mate en passant?

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Speak for yourself 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Exactly.. or interests like Gin Tonic / Wine. Every second woman has them in there. That's not an interest. You really define yourself as a person through you alcohol consumption? Like wtf, what a boring person.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Are there people who make gin tonic their whole personality like there's people who do weed?

by Anonymous 8 months ago

From my experience, rather many people with addictions tend to make their addiction their entire personality

by Anonymous 8 months ago

It's not an addiction man it's my hobby.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

lemme guess, you can quit anytime you want?

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Have you seen profiles on dating apps? I can only speak for female accounts since that's all I've searched as a straight dude, but every other page involves wine, mimosas, or something of the sort. I'm pretty sure it's a meme at this point. And it's commonly featured in at least 1 profile pic.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Ahaha that's so true! There's always the picture with wine glass in hand.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

It's made so prominent that I can't reasonably assume that these women aren't binge drinkers or something. Now social drinking is fine, but most give me no reason to give them the benefit of the doubt. Although my tolerance for alcohol consumption is considerably lower than most people's since I myself don't touch booze whatsoever and would prefer a woman who also doesn't. So my perspective will be a bit different than most as a result.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Usually stoners actually do something while they're high, at least in my experience with them, be it video games or talking with each other. It's not like most people will roll another joint immediately after finishing the first rotation unless they got a weak batch.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

A better analogy is people who make alcohol their whole personality, and yes, there are millions of them.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Yeah but considering gin tonic *is* alcohol I figured I'd go with something different.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

It's important to know if people drinks or not.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

That's a property you can set under lifestyle, no need to put it as an interest.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Might as well be honest about it. If you drink a lot, I'd consider it an interest. I go to the pub once a week or once a fortnight because I like drinking with my friends. I'd rather go out with a person that drinks rather than a person that doesn't.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Interests: Traveling, [insert alcoholic beverage], TikTok, dogs, [insert second alcoholic beverage] Bikini and ass pics One word answers to profile prompts "Im not on here much, add me on snap/insta" Only respond with "haha" "lol" "yeah" and "hey" You now have the recipe to blend in with 95% of Tinder women

by Anonymous 8 months ago

The purpose of dating profiles is to filter out people before you even meet them. Some people use tinder strictly for hookups but a majority of the users actually want to meet someone they could actually get along with and spend time with. There are people who want to meet women with those interests. They put that on their profile so you won't swipe right thinking there someone different. Just like a woman putting "Taylor Swift" as one of her interests. Yeah you're allowed to judge her for it, but that's the whole entire point of dating apps to begin with.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

No one is really looking at interests, they are just looking for hot people whose profile isn't immediately repulsive in some way

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I guess having an interesting bio and some curious hobbies do not guarantee you a date, but one hot picture does?

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I wouldn't say either guarantee you a date. But you're far more likely to get a match if you're physically attractive than you are if you lay out a good bio and are average or below.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

It's a shame more people don't look beyond the superficial. I guess it's partly down to how the apps are designed though.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Hey I actually almost exclusively swiped based off of interest and bio! Which was actually really hard to do at times, because a lot of people didn't list their interests or have a bio at all... But I must've done something right because it's how I met my fiancé

by Anonymous 8 months ago

i mean that option does somewhat make sense, for instance for a single mom with a son in high school or what not

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Yeah but your kid(s) isn't really an interest though, its a responsibility

by Anonymous 8 months ago

That depends on how good of a parent you are. I'd hope a good parent would take genuine interest in their child's life and hobbies opposed to treating it like some responsibility they have to do.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Tinder is dumb, here a fix

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Totally agree. And how is Gin Tonic a hobby?

by Anonymous 8 months ago

just write it in your bio then, my guy. That's what it's for. I swear when I was on dating apps, I saw so many short or nonexistent bios. Flesh out your bios if you want to find a date and/or partner! I liked to try to feel out someone's vibe from their profile before swiping

by Anonymous 8 months ago

There are plenty of 18 year olds in high school buddy

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I coach high school sports…. So I guess I have some use for it if I were to use the app again.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Oh well I guess you'll have to venture out into the real world to meet people.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I think the high school sports is aimed more for Americans who have crazy funding and televised HS sports

by Anonymous 8 months ago

We have televised hs sports?

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Tinder is dumb.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Whenever i see ‘Tattoos' as an interest i can only hear in my hear a broad Essex accent straight out of love island.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I wouldn't be surprised if it was just some generic list used. I'm not saying that they didn't, but do you think someone sits there and thinks up as many terms as they can? Because a lot of these lists are used out there and I bet at this point it's easier to just use a 3rd party file or something. yes i'm being broad

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Yep I ended up just putting chess in my bio. I was actually really surprised by how many boys suddenly wanted to learn how to play.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I'm genuinely curious, what sort of interests do you have that aren't on there? I have not come up with any that I couldn't find there tbh

by Anonymous 8 months ago

dork

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Because Tinder is a hook-up app, it's not for people seeking meaningful relationships. The interface is designed around looking at someone's pic and immediately choosing whether to "swipe left or swipe right" based on first impressions.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

There's no "not religious" option. You have to either be "Atheist" or "Agnostic" on dating apps.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

In Indiana everyone goes to highschool basketball games.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

They are doing you a favour by keeping chess out. Trust me on this, no girl will every see "chess" as an interest and think "ah what an interesting guy". They just think "nerd" and then they swipe left.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Girl here, we think "nerd, FINALLY" and swipe right lol

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Not in my experience as a nerd guy, but sure...

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I think it's more of a Tinder problem than a girl problem.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Could be but I wouldn't say my real life dating experience has been any different.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Unlucky, that has been my experience and I never hid my nerdiness.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Im a guy and this isn't true at all.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I am a guy too, used to have nerdy stuff in my profile, still do. Guess how many girlfriends I've had 😂

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Something about your attitude doesn't sit right with me. Do you have any female friends?

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I wouldn't mind seeing chess as an interest. Decent first date activity idea. More memorable and unique than dates in cafes or bars.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

True tbh. It's a thing you tell in a conversation, not announce on a dating profile

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Whoever uses Tinder and other dating apps is dumb as rocks.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

You're reading profiles on tinder before swiping? Bruh....read profiles after making matches while deciding if you should send a message

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Nobody cares that you want to have sex. Focus on the more important things in life.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

its hilarious to see people still use all these dating apps in 2023 when instagram literally exists lmao, and guys remember there's very little chances that a girl is gonna hit you up first so dont be afraid of doing the honors and slide in their dms

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Maybe whoever designed those interests is from the south where high school sports are big.

by Anonymous 8 months ago
