+163 The amount of paper wasted on sending junk mail to people who have moved or don't exist must be astronomical, amirite?

I worked at a printshop that did a lot of EDD mailers (junk mail). You wouldn't believe the wasted paper and how easy companies (or anyone) can just blast a whole region for predetermined dollars.

For twenty years, we have been receiving bank statements for the previous owners of the house. We have tried 'not known at this address ' and things like that. A few times, I have taken a hand full of statements to a branch of the bank. These envelopes keep coming.

How about the junk mail sent to no one in particular? Where it's just the address or there's "or resident". Hell, even include junk mail addresses the current person, it's a hugely wasteful practice.

The amount of paper wasted on sending junk mail ~~to people that have moved or don't exist~~ must be astronomical

And it's usually glossy full colour leaflets that must be a pain to recycle.

We hear about "the climate impact of leaf blowers" but not a word about the universally disliked junk mail. From tree to mailbox it is an enormous waste of resources and energy.

The amount of paper wasted on sending junk mail just to me at my address is astronomical. It all goes straight in the trash unopened.

> It all goes straight in the trash unopened. There's your problem. You need to write "Please take me off your mailing list" on the whatever it is, stuff it all into the business return mail envelope, and send it all back to them.

Yet I find it less annoying than spam emails. Don't know why

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Probably because you don't know how to use spam filters in your inbox

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I know how to use spam filters and autodelete, but thank you for your concern

I receive junk mail at addresses I've never even lived at.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

They don't gaf who gets it.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Wait until you find out they waste paper to send bills to dead people. Don't ask me how I know unless you want a really sad story.

I've lived at my current address for almost 7 years and I still get the previous person's mail all the time. I've even written "So-and-so does not live here!" in my mailbox and the USPS people don't care for my shenanigans

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Writing on junk mail doesn't do anything. Also a huge amount say "or current resident"

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You missed the part that says "OR CURRENT RESIDENT"

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Plenty of the junkmail just has the dude's name

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Is it 1972 there OP? Who gets paper junk mail these days?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Uhh everyone? I'm guessing you live with your parents who check the mail for you.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Everyone?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You must live in a half way house or something. Seriously, dumbest response I've ever seen.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Or just sending it to people who dgaf.

And I feel guilty if I don't recycle a piece of cardboard.

I got 3 big boxes of trial sized toothpaste addressed to an old dentist that used to live at my address from Crest promotional stuff. Now we don't have to buy toothpaste for like 10 years lmao.
