What about egypt lmao

I'd argue that China stands shoulder to shoulder with them.

I kinda doubt that the byzantine would have hated being called Greeks. Weren't the Greeks proud of being Greek even under Western Roman rule.

by Anonymous 7 months ago

Of course they were proud, they're Greek! Just didn't have a country from Roman conquest until 1830. Basically Euro-Kurds during that time. That's why they have the strongest staying power.

Greeks of the past and Greeks now are totally different. The same applies to any group with the same or similar name over time frames that are this long. And just because of the name is the same does not mean that they have the strongest saying power.

We call and treat them as the same. Hence, staying power.

greece has the richest history in the world ig basically shaped the planet

They're only relevant because of anglic scholarship and the homages to ancient Greek governance in the formation of the US government.

lol no

by Anonymous 7 months ago

Wait wait. So the civilization that is most irrelevant today, is the best? I'm so confused

by Anonymous 7 months ago

The ancient civilisation that is most irrelevant today (but still around) has the best staying power. Yes.

What's your metric for staying power and what are we looking for? Animal husbandry, writing, math etc were all not invented by Greeks and have permeated the entire world Arabic numerals are used in every language, for example. Also, strong disagree that staying power is evidenced by only being relevant for past accomplishments. China has a much stronger impact today than Greece. They are also a very old nation. Because China is stronger today and still Chinese, it seems China has a stronger staying power.

So the problem with this logic is it discounts the fact that some of the bigger players in history came later The most influential one that everyone's going to remember forever is going to be the British They just haven't been as around as long but their contributions are vastly greater (anyone who's reading this is doing it on a computing device powered by electricity)

You're free to speculate on the future, but that hasnt happened yet. Until Greece disappears, they are reigning champions.
