Self-driving cars don't have a driver's license to operate on the roads. amirite?
by Anonymous1 year ago
Every "Self Driving" vehicle that is currently being used on the road has to have government permission to operate on the public byways. All the other types of level 2 assisted driving systems (Tesla FSD beta, GM Super Cruise, Ford Blue Cruise... and others) require a licensed driver behind the wheel, prepared to immediately take control.

If I sit behind the wheel of a completely autonomous vehicle, should I need a license?

Only a Level 5 autonomous vehicle would be legal to ride in without a drivers license. The way I feel about it is this - If I felt it was safe enough for me to put my 9 and 10 year old kids in one by themselves to be taken to school, then they are safe to ride in without a license. No Less.

There still has to be some kind of registration for them before they are allowed on the road, right?

So far only human drivers need drivers licenses to participate in road traffic. Everything else is constant enough to simply be allowed or disallowed.

That's because there is no driver.

Then why's it on the road?
by Anonymous1 year ago
The drivers license allows a driver to operate, not a vehicle to be operated. That's the registration part of "license and registration please."

Actual answer: because drivers' licenses are for people. AIs get approved other ways. Fun answer: Why are humans allowed on the road with less than the 20 million cumulative years of driving experience an AI has?

Because it's much safer than human drivers.

Don't worry the States will make sure they get paid in some way or another.

This implies the potential for laws that will come about to regulate AI. My thinking meat is going brrrrrr but in a fun way

These are the worst words I've seen strung together in a long time. Awful, just awful.
