This is not an unpopular opinion. Umpires are controversial always and corruption is common. Coming from a European. Some FiFA umpires have had to go in hiding because a large part of the world were out for their lives. Not just the west. Brazil and Argentine too.

Also mate ball sports are contact sports, violence, within an established framework is allowed. as sick as it may sound to us non athletes. If your only chance at the world cup is ruining someone elses career. You'll do it, Dog eat dog. And football is tame compared to hockey.

Noticed this going on in SEC college football as well. Real blatant stuff too, like kicking, pushing, punching, and knocking down players after the whistle, lots of stuff not getting called.
