Unpopular and untrue are not the same. A photograph is a more accurate representation of how you look to others.

How can a photograph be more accurate? Different cameras have different lenses therefore making your appearance look different depending on what camera is being used

The reason why we say that a picture is more accurate is because your reflection is a reversed image of you. If you raise your right hand, mirror-you raised the left hand whereas selfie-you still raises the right hand. Since your face and body aren't completely symmetric, selfie-you and mirror-you look a bit different. Your reversed image is the one you're used to see and the one you identify with. That is why something may feel a bit unsettling when you look at yourself on a picture. This is, however, how people see you… EXCEEEEEPT it doesn't feel off for them as this is the version of you they are used to see. So WHAT they see is how you look on pictures but HOW they see it is how you see yourself in the mirror.
