+12 If a young woman wants to find a good bf (long-term), she should listen to her father and let him do the vetting. amirite?

by Anonymous 5 months ago

If I listened to my father, I'd be a high school drop out

by Consistent-Case 5 months ago

This only works if the father can somehow read minds and is also a good guy himself.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Nope. It's actually a bit funny how easy it is to read younger lads, when you are an older man. Even as someone in your 30s. You don't even need to spend a huge amount of time with them.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

I'm a man in my thirties. People are more complicated than you think.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

People may be complicated in some ways, very easy in others. Most dudes aren't as slick as they think, when it comes to dating.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

And the ones who aren't slick don't need an "older male figure" to see it to figure it out. Just someone who isn't naive.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

All young people are naive. And when you date, the rose-tinted glasses do their evil too. An older figure is always good to have, to give you perspective. When it comes to young men, though, an older man simply understands them better.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Which means it's nothing to do with gender, and more just about not literally being a child with no experience with others. A old guy is only more helpful if he's a mind reader who is also a good guy.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Which means it's nothing to do with gender Ignored half of my reply. A old guy is only more helpful if he's a mind reader Don't need to be one to understand younger dudes. I surely don't. Neither did any older man in my life. Maybe you do. who is also a good guy Fair enough.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

I ignored the irrelevant half of your reply. Also don't need to be a man to understand them. I saw from a mile away that my younger sibling's girlfriend would be a problem. I said so. I was right. I didn't need to be a woman to see that.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

You ignored the relevant part that you had no answer to. Also don't need to be a man to understand them Except somehow most older men can see fkboys from a mile away, while neither girls nor their mothers notice until it's too late. A story I've seen many times. Almost like there IS something to having been a young lad yourself, and knowing how to spot age-old bs tactics.

What if you don't have a father?

by Anonymous 5 months ago

that's a bummer.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

My father blitzed his marriage with cocaine and hookers. Ima peace out on that.

by kulasalbertha 5 months ago

This screams of my daughter is dating someone I don't like and should listen to me. 🙄

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Reading people is definitely not that easy. Especially if you take two people from different generations. The gap today is quite huge and people from different generations struggle to understand each other.

by boehmcullen 5 months ago

Dating didn't change much beyond technology we use for it. People from different generations don't "struggle to understand" each other. As always, youth thinks they know best, even though failed relationship rates prove otherwise.

Did you let your mom pick out your GF?

by Anonymous 5 months ago

This opinion goes beyond unpopular and straight into just uninformed. What happened to finding what works for you? Why would you want what your dad wants? Why does your dad have to know better? Sounds like a misogynistic justification to a personal event which didn't work out as you'd like it. Ie., Her dad loved you but she didn't

by Anonymous 5 months ago

So, what am I uninformed about? You didn't explain. What dad wants is for his daughter to be happy. To not be hurt by some some fkboy, who fooled her. Which happens only too often.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

You know women also toy with guys and mess up their lives too? How many men are stuck paying child support to someone who used a kid to control them? Why make this gendered at all? Lol.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

My dad wanted to control my life and beat me with a metal yardstick when I couldn't understand basic math problems in third grade… don't think I'd want him picking my spouse lol

by Anonymous 5 months ago

I suppose not, in that case. Sorry.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

I think you're going to find that fathers aren't as loving and awesome as you want them to be. At the point that daughters reach dating age, you should be confident enough in your parenting to let her make her own mistakes. If you get to this point and you feel that she's picking the wrong dudes… congrats. You've failed as a parent.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

And it is sometimes, not always, correct when they say that. You teach kids, you show them an example, you explain things to them to the best of your ability, but at the end of the day, they make choices in their lives. If your kids perfectly listen to you, or make perfect choices, consider yourself lucky.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Ugh … you're one of those parents… Statistically and psychologically speaking, your daughter is going to date and marry someone exactly like her father. If you, as her father, don't like who's she's dating, it's past time to look in the mirror.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣..... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 waait wait, let me catch a breath. phew NO.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

What a compelling argument!

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Ah yes, the good ol' ad hominem. For times when you find yourself lacking in mental capacity to formulate an actual argument.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

lol so moms should pick your wife?

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Truly an unpopular opinion. And a stupid one at that.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Is it sexist to say a man understands other men better?

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Yep, it's sexist to assume that women are too naive to see through someone's bad intentions. My mother and I were much better in tune with people's true motives than my father ever was. And no, you don't automatically get people because you share the same genitals. Men and women are not a monolith. And if they were, you could use the same argument that a mother should be able to tell her son who to date…but somehow I doubt you will because you are someone with outdated views on gender.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Men understand other men better. Women understand other women better. Nothing to do with sexism, everything to do with different experiences we had in life. I can recognize other dude's behaviours as the same ones I had, back in the day. I know the reasoning behind them. There's no such thing as "outdated" when it comes to this. These concepts are timeless.

by Anonymous 5 months ago

The quickest way to get a girl age 25 or under to do something is to strenuously tell them not to do it or especially to expressly forbid them from doing it. If we're talking about "common sense," someone should probably mention that.

by Krath 5 months ago

A lot of dads don't even know their daughter's birthday but they should veto who she dates ? Also men aren't that simple that you can see what they think (not all men remember ?). If you can see the red flags her friends and other closed ones can too and yet don't have the right to vet people.
