Tony: Ohhh!!

What types of views do you think are censored? No shortage of dumb people expressing dumb views as far as I can tell

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Online platforms censor all manner of views such as: people who are skeptical of vaccines (especially the COVID vax), the idea of neo-pronouns and transgenderism, the debate on climate change, the discourse on illegal aliens/immigrants, and more. This is all based on what language is to be used since there are keywords that are censored based on political ideology. What's in a word? A lot. That's why censorship online is such a problem. If I call someone who jumps the border an "illegal alien" I could get censored for "hate" even though I'm referring to a specific criminal code and the person in question whom broke the code. US Code 8, section 1325 and 1326 to be exact. But the online platforms and left want to use a different term to make people unable to distinguish between the aforementioned immigrant and lump them into legal aliens/immigrants. They also want to soften the term by calling them "undocumented" instead, which provides them with a linguistic advantage in debate. So yeah. Censorship is occurring and to one side of the debate.

Government actively imposes in business though. They leverage all kinds of regulatory powers, licensing and such to get their way. This is a fact you'll find even admitted on .gov websites, such as World War 2 era or Cold War propaganda campaigns.

by Famous_Possible1409 9 months ago

What about slippery slope arguments? Or the boiling frog hypothesis? The idea that banning anti-vaxxers now can lead to banning a speech you do care about later, because the precedent is there and the values of leaders change, with the people shifting in and out of power, and as society itself shifts their views?

by Famous_Possible1409 9 months ago

You mean the slippery slope fallacy? You understand that a fallacy is a flawed line of logic, right? Using it unironically as your argument is.. impressively bad. The end result is that it's a private business - don't like it? Move on. Make your own if you really want.

by Ok-Salamander-3510 9 months ago

But is it a falicy? Understand that I'm not quoting pseudo-intellectuals for the sake of making a point. I'm basing my opinion on history, and the tactics used by authoritarian governments. The fact is, every single tin pot dictator started out claiming their policies were for the public good. And they took advantage of that good will to commit the worst crimes against their people. Trust is a fools game, in my opinion. The old argument about trusting the captain of your ship is itself a falicy, as leaders often are not on the same voyage we are. It is more akin to them operating our ship as they would a drone, if we crash they are in no real danger. This logic of course extends to any large organization, that has people depending on those above them having their best interests at heart. They often don't, and that isn't a secret these days.

by Famous_Possible1409 9 months ago

Certainly it does. But you can't pre-empt crime. I'm sorry you think you can, but you can't. Censoring the worst of humanity only drives them into the shadows, they are still there. And if you feel calls to violence lead to violence, that says a lot more about your low opinion of the average person. Frankly, I fear the one who thinks the world would be well and good if only everyone would behave in the ways they think is best. That's arrogant, self rightous, and dangerous.

by Famous_Possible1409 9 months ago

The platform doesn't censor. The individuals using it do. Also once AGAIN, only govt is not allowed to censor, any private individual or company can do it all day long.

by Nedraratke 9 months ago

This isn't censorship, this is people asking you to leave their space since you're being an asshole

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Ok… well… the person I was responding to was probably thinking only hate speech etc is being censored but it's all kinds of different political opinions. Then you come along and reinforce the echo chamber point.

by Jacobsonbrant 9 months ago

You can say whatever you want....i don't have to listen

by Far-Tale2782 9 months ago

Websites are not required to display your message. But that doesn't mean you are not allowed to express your view. What you are saying is that you should be allowed to express your view AND force someone to broadcast it for you.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Silence!

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Companies can have whatever rules they want in that regard though. You won't be arrested but people also have the right to shut you up on their platform. You have every right to say whatever you want in your home or public place, as long as it doesn't break the "yelling fire" rules or whatever.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

I tried that here apparently unpopular opinions only allow certain opinions. You don't find that odd?

by windlerrosemari 9 months ago

What opinion are you whining about not being allowed?

by Simonisprecious 9 months ago

Why would that be odd?

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Any gibberish about "my right to my opinion" this vague is always just the OP admitting they are an asshole. This is 100% a passive aggressive "Come back here! Why won't you let me civilly express my horrible opinion to you!" person.

by Little_Butterfly8459 9 months ago

I'm not talking about advocating for violence.

by windlerrosemari 9 months ago

Then you already agree that some things need to be censored.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

You mean private sites have rules? And you are expected to follow those rules on sites that are not government ran or controlled? The key word is private - that's like saying that you don't think a 5 star restaurant should have a dress code in their establishment which by law they have that right since it's a private establishment.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

You wanting to express your unpopular opinion on a private site is not a protected right. And you are citing to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which makes it unlawful for an EMPLOYER to discriminate against sex, religion, race, etc. If the American Legion or VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) does not let a non-veteran join and that person happens to be a Black Asian Gay Woman does not make that unlawful because the private organization set forth the rule that to be a memeber of this organization that you have to be a Veteran. You are wrong and just need to admit it - it is not discrimination that is against the law.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Yeah bro, this was a bad analogy. Race is a protected class, your opinions are not

by Gleasonlynn 9 months ago

Why don't you just tell us what your views are?

by reynoldsbilly 9 months ago

Bro got banned on Facebook for hate speech again.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Nah don't use Facebook.

by windlerrosemari 9 months ago

Because you got banned.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

No I'm not that old yet….

by windlerrosemari 9 months ago

Then you haven't encountered bad faith arguments and the people who use words not to come to a mutual understanding but to manipulate and control. Your opinion screams nativity.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

They are allowed to express them. Doesn't mean they won't suffer negative consequences from said expression.

by Livid_Holiday1368 9 months ago

No one is censoring you.

by YogurtclosetOk 9 months ago

"Everyone has an opinion and everyone has an asshole. I don't want to see your asshole, and I don't wanna hear your opinion"

by Budget-Day9632 9 months ago

Whenever someone says something like this, the view they were theirs to discuss always winds up being horribly racist or sexist or something.

by Ok_Government 9 months ago

This is not censorship. It is assertion of property rights. Social media as it is right now is private property and owner of property is allowed to decide what happens with their property. Simply put, I have right to prevent you from displaying any message whatsoever on my car or garage.

by Bitter-Durian1349 9 months ago

And, even if you let me put a message on your car or garage, you still don't have to let OP put their message up.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Yep. And I can also let you put exactly same message as I have refused to let OP put up. I need no more justification than it being my whim.

by Bitter-Durian1349 9 months ago

🫡

by windlerrosemari 9 months ago

As long as its not slander, yes.

by Charming_Sandwich504 9 months ago

People can say what they want as long as they don't try to force others to listen to it.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Uhh youre allowed to have your opinions, same as others that have to deal with you, if your opinions are vile, dont expect to be respected for it, the reactions you get are also fair game

by Anonymous 9 months ago
