+27 Only bilingual people truly know how terrible Google translate is, amirite?

I always used to translate stuff to Chinese then back to English, that was pretty entertaining. Part of this problem is basically impossible to overcome though, because there's plenty of stuff that's common in one language but doesn't exist in another.

ChatGPT is already better than Google Translate in my experience

I've run into some weird experiences with it though. I had written a recipe in Spanish with a lot of strange nuances and details and instructions. And when chatgpt translated it, it culled out a lot of the things that made the recipe special. Almost like it was making it more normalized to what a regular recipe would be for spaghetti sauce

I guess it depends on the language, but French/English got pretty good around 5 years ago in my experience. Of course now DeepL is where i go too but still Google is light years away from even 10 years ago

My Ukranian friend uses google translate when he can't think of a word in english and it always makes sense. I was trying to explain a word in English to him and used google translate. He literally laughed and said "that's not a word. It is made up" That's when I realized google translate was not so optimized lol. To him it looked like I typed the equivalent of 'jskdjsidnj' in English. Just a totally made up word that didn't make sense.
