I think this about pick up trucks. When did they all turn into luxury vehicles costing $60k - $80k+?
by brendan4511 months ago
Sounds like Ford is trying to reverse this with the Maverick. Sounds pretty utilitarian. At least compared to the $70k pavement princesses.

The macerick is a much smaller truck than a full size pickup. But its perfect for home DIY projects. You're right with that though, they're making an affordable truck again.

Cause people are buying it.

No matter how many people pretend "No I would totally buy it" a dirt cheap car with no safety features, no tech, no driver comfort, and no convenience features would not sell. In 2024 an 86 HP car with crank windows, no radio, no AC, and no cup holders would not be viable commercially at any price. People expect more out of their vehicles now then they did in 1985 and that's not a problem to be solved.

None of that relates to the exterior styling, though, which is OPs point.

I wouldn't buy them because they are too small.

But that's the point. The only thing you want is bluetooth. The only thing Ted wants is a back up camera. The only thing Steve wants is heated seats. The only thing Bob wants is... and so on. It's expensive to have a bajillion and one configurations (that's what killed the 2010s era Dodge Dart it was a dirt cheap car that was too customizable and therefore too expensive to produce even though no one Dart was all that expensive) so they have to put the bluetooth and the back up camera and the heated seats and this and that in every car, and we're right back where we started. The era of the cheap "every person" car is over.

The "sports car look" that you are referring to is an aerodynamic shape. It costs way less to make car into that shape than cost of gasoline that the shape will save due to better fuel efficiency. Retro-looking "simple" cars are more expensive to operate.

What's the issue with cars looking good?
by Anonymous11 months ago
Paying extra for looks is silly.
by Anonymous11 months ago
How do we know that we're paying extra?
by Anonymous11 months ago
Low end cars being more expensive, if that is the case, feels like a different opinion.

Absolutely love mine as well. I have the hatchback one and I love the storage

Most stock cars look way to agressive and would have been considered riced even 20 years back
by Anonymous11 months ago
They look nice, but they're also more expensive than they used to be. I miss the days when you could get a basic car for a reasonable price.

Prius cost as much as a Tesla.. wouldn't consider it cheap
by Anonymous11 months ago
I'm not seeing it. Camry, Civic, Rio, etc all just look like basic sedans.

Look at Dacia Logan for simplicity if that what you want and also cheap.

The look is actually mandated by manufacturing laws in order to have a certain level of aerodynamics.
