+22 Instead of euthanizing them, unwanted but healthy shelter animals should be butchered to feed the needy. amirite?

by PassionUnhappy2435 1 month ago

Lmaooo Sure, in the abstract, it makes sense. But imagine the horror if you are a homeless person who loves dogs and now the food you're being given is dog meat. Tbh, while there's a hunger crisis there's also not really a food shortage crisis. We have plenty of food, it's just a matter of getting it to people.

by lelabreitenberg 1 month ago

Exactly! This only would make sense theoretically if there was a true shortage of food; but there actually isn't. There's enough food being grown, raised, packaged etc... for everyone on earth to never go hungry many times over. Not everyone on earth would be able to have steak and lobster or even hamburgers every day of their lives of course; but everyone would be fed with the proper nutrition they need with foods they generally like; and with much to spare too. The true problem is wastefulness and the ability to get the food to hungry people efficiently. Another issue is of course greedy food corporations and governments that are in the pockets of those industries, which is a huge thing individual countries and ultimately our global society will have to deal with in the future.

by CandidResort7996 1 month ago

Definitely an unpopular opinion. We are not raised culturally to eat doggies, it won't ever happen here

by Normal-Freedom 1 month ago

Is it really better to kill them and not eat them, which we already do?

by PassionUnhappy2435 1 month ago

How much edible meat do you think is on a starved fighting pit? Disregard the morality here. Dog meat breeds exist because most dogs are not fit for butchering. Also, a shelter dog is usually riddled with worms and is physically weak. Also cats are euthanized at incredibly high rates. They are basically inedible. The pelt is what you would be saving from most of these animals. There is no market for selling deceased pet fur.

by javonte38 1 month ago

Ok but hear me out, those pelts could be made into clothing for the homeless, or even tents for the homeless. The homeless people could live inside hollowed out shelter pets and then they wouldn't be homeless anymore.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Even better, lets make a business and disrupt the fur trading industry with the pelts of euthanized pets!

by javonte38 1 month ago

Just because you say something, doesn't mean it makes any sense. He can say only the healthy ones in the title, but how is that even feasible ?

by javonte38 1 month ago

How is what feasible? Determining if an animal is healthy or not? I don't know, ask literally any vet.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

We literally have plenty of food already, we just waste it

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Agreed, all those healthy dogs we could've turned into food just wasted by needlessly euthanizing them

by Abject_Driver3119 4 weeks ago

So, stores and restaurants have more than enough excess waste to feed the needy in their neighborhoods. The issue is the legality around food prep. You get someone sick, you're open to a lawsuit. And that's why food is thrown away every night. Food prep laws are there for good reason, and breaking them has consequences. End of the night food, expired food, or untrained people prepping dogs and cats for mass distribution will create problems. Being in the service industry at one time helps teach you a lot.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

There's standards that go into how livestock have to be handled and fed for them to be acceptable for human consumption. Feeding people meat from animals with unknown pasts who are prone to having parasites would be very unsafe/gross

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Oh that's definitely bold and unpopular but hmmm yeah. Good luck finding people willing to cut up dogs and cats though.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Not for people, no way.

by AccomplishedCress 4 weeks ago

We have a food waste issue not a food scarcity issue. We could easily reallocate food to people who need it instead of killing more animals. Also if you spend time working at food pantries you will quickly learn and hear people complaining about the perfectly good food that they are receiving for free. Feeding them dead dogs will not go over well.

by Klinglucius 4 weeks ago

PSYCHO

by aubreeondricka 4 weeks ago

Lol, typical surface-level thinker. There's no food shortage and no one wants to euthanize these dogs either let alone butcher them for scraps of meat.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

You know what…..this actually makes some sense.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Gotta agree. One of the oddest and beautifully double-edged takes I've seen. Beautiful deconstruction of societal norms. For the record, I do not condone eating doggies

by Creepy_Yard8533 4 weeks ago

i hate that this makes sense

by walshbranson 4 weeks ago

I have it on good authority from a few different sources that dog meat (or any carnivore meat) tastes pretty awful.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

People aren't not eating because of a lack of meat. Finding a way to take euthanized animals, prepare and distribute the meat isn't free. I'd imagine it'd be cheaper and more efficient to take however much it would cost above regular euthanasia to have a program that ensures the meat is safe, stores and distributes it to just but some food at a store to hand out. This is aside from the fact that I don't particularly think eating dogs and cats is good for us (from a health rather than moral point of view), that many people would hate the idea and that if you did manage to scale it up to efficiency the unintended consequences might be... interesting, with a market for stolen pets to be euthanized.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

If we had an actual food shortage, then sure that would be a dark but understandable path to take. We have plenty of food. Plenty of food gets wasted every day. We just need better management of the food we have. Butchering unwanted pets to feed the homeless is unnecessary.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

If you're going to ask then yes I'd rather just kill them. All day every day.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Wow. This is incredibly disgusting.

by Infamous_Soup_8975 4 weeks ago

Almost like it might be...unpopular? But in all seriousness, if the end result is a dead animal either way, isn't it better if it doesn't go to waste?

by PassionUnhappy2435 4 weeks ago

Not really. Would you come to the same conclusion if someone said we should do the same for unwanted kids at orphanages or do you just have no respect for anything unless it's a human being?

by Infamous_Soup_8975 4 weeks ago

don't be hypocritical you do not have same regards for the same living creatures.

by Florian25 4 weeks ago

Sounding like a big time hypocrite. The only reason people say this is because they have dogs in their homes and not cows.

by Abject_Driver3119 4 weeks ago

Yep, the latter. They are animals and we eat animals anyways....

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Why don't we just feed the poors stray cats?

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

OP never met a needy person.

by Background_Word 4 weeks ago

....I? .....I? ....What?

by myah43 4 weeks ago

Well... This is definitely unpopular at least. LOL

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Okay but hear me out. Maybe just maybe…we start passing laws that require restaurants to donate excess food rather than throwing it away. That would feed a lot of people. I'm not sure how this would technically would I'm just throwing something out there.

by hildajohnson 4 weeks ago

I mean there are issues with donating that food too. But on a macro level I agree. The amount of food waste I saw working in a place like that was disheartening

by Abject_Driver3119 4 weeks ago

Yeah. I figure a change like this would be less dehumanizing than being fed the neighborhood cat however. That should probably be a last resort lol.

by hildajohnson 4 weeks ago

Maybe….just maybe, think it through first then.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

That line was hilarious

by Abject_Driver3119 4 weeks ago

Should we butcher the homeless to feed other homeless? Or butcher the homeless to feed the animals owned by the rich?

by Name31 4 weeks ago

How about butcher the rich to feed the homeless?

by javonte38 4 weeks ago

All this talk of cannibalism is making me hungry.

by coledamian 4 weeks ago

Let's go to a shelter and adopt a dog about to be euthanized. Because ya know, its meat is going to be wasted.

by javonte38 4 weeks ago

Inb4 OP opens Meowschwitz, kudos on an original unpopular opinion

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Thats not a bad idea, Why not? If it was good enough for Lewis and Clark it should be good enough for the food bank.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Maybe in Asia where some people eat dogs and cats. Better they make coats out of their pelts for the needy.

by External_Throat2084 4 weeks ago

This is a lot

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Gross 🤮

by Any_Barnacle 4 weeks ago

If people could receive free dog/cat meat, why not just give them free beef/chicken? Its not a scarcity of normal livestock that keeps them hungry

by alejandrabins 4 weeks ago

Gross.

by uwalker 4 weeks ago

In theory sure it makes sense, but good luck getting the majority to commit to eating dog. This isn't China, we don't think about cooking dog or cat for a meal

by Hayesmaud 4 weeks ago

I'm sorry, WHAT

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Hell nah

by Destini84 4 weeks ago

I saw a billboard that had pigs- cows- chickens- dogs-etc It was for PETA, why choose one meat? I would think this is very beneficial. I've had cat and dog before.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Yeah this is a good point.

by athena16 4 weeks ago

Why is it important to feed the needy?

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

If the animals must die, it is very reasonable to use their meat to feed the hungry. But then the questions will start. And then if lines aren't clearly drawn, people will start just mass breeding pets and ‘abandoning' them to kill shelters in order to feed the hungry.

by Late-Trip 4 weeks ago

I like the idea.

by manteblanche 4 weeks ago

I wish there was a world where euthanasia didn't have to happen, but as long as it does, I actually agree with this. In Alaska they have a system to give out roadkill so it doesn't go to waste

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

I wanna hate this idea, but damnit this person has a point. Marinate anything long enough and I'm sure it'll get tender....

by More-Hornet 4 weeks ago

It's entertaining but also very sad

by Lesly24 4 weeks ago

Lol yeah, the amount of people taking the "ethical/moral" stand point is hilarious. Like somehow they're above others because they chose to eat cow/chicken and left out cat/dog from their diet.

by Abject_Driver3119 4 weeks ago

My opinion is even worse. Instead of putting down violent dogs like pit bulls they should allow them to fight in rings and have people bet on them. But I also hate pit bulls and big dogs and think they should be illegal to own. So my opinion isn't based on rational thinking.

by Eoconner 4 weeks ago

Feed the inner gambler in us all. I would watch that over the ufc

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

There's no hunger crisis but this plan is fine.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

I could see it maybe going into some sort of other animal feed though feeding it back to dogs might be disturbing.

by Mooretaryn 4 weeks ago

Definitely unpopular, and I hate it too lol. Have an updoot

by Character-Network989 4 weeks ago

Yeah, if the shelters are gonna just kill them anyways, might as well at least get something out of it.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Replace "euthanize" with "kill for food" and this is common place in many countries. I don't actually hate this idea it just needs to be expanded upon and regulated. Homelessness is real problem that's only getting worse with inaction

by Otherwise_Couple 4 weeks ago

Homelessness is a problem, but homeless people aren't dying of starvation.
