+52 A whale can drown. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

That's usually how they die of old age at some point they decide not to or don't have the strength to surface

Yes. But their body and the nutrients they provide are a blessing for the ecosystem and many, many other animals. A whalefall, when a whale body reaches the ocean floor, is an active, nourishing ecosystem in itself for well over a century. A gentle giant in life, and giving still even in death.

I can't think of a being that can't drown.

They breathe air with lungs. Most things with lungs can drown. Let me spin you a yarn about creatures called dolphins...

Dolphin genitalia are nearly identical to humans.

by Rudolphheathcot 4 weeks ago

I mean, so can a fish..

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

No, fish don't drown. They suffocate because there's not enough dissolved oxygen in the water

by Conroyramon 4 weeks ago

Drowning is death by immersion in water. Fish are always immersed in water and don't respire the same way as organisms with lungs.

by Conroyramon 4 weeks ago

The key is being unable to breathe while under water lol. Doesn't matter what the organ of respiration is.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

No. The method of breathing is actually paramount. Fish do not drown, they suffocate.

by Conroyramon 4 weeks ago

Fair enough

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

The reason they're not getting enough O2 isn't due to being in water, it's due to the decreased amount of oxygen in the water. It's like having a bag sealed over one's head.
