We will destroy earth before we can finish the project

Well which is it? Will it take generations, or will it never happen? Those are two different things.

It would take too long to set up, we would die out before we finish or it'll be half assed because we are running out of resources

Neil deGrasse Tyson once said that if you can terraform Mars, you can terraform Earth and Earth is already here so you might as well just fix this planet without the long ass trip.

Mars is a much shallower gravity well to send stuff out of in space. With increasing use of human-made objects in space, it may end up being cheaper to mine stuff out of Mars and shoot it compared to trying to get stuff through Earth gravity and atmosphere. So, mining and industrial operations on Mars may as well make economic sense in the future. And that's not even getting into military utility of having presence on Mars.
