For sure the dishwasher uses less water than handwashing for a full load. I don't see how the dishwasher could win if you only had one fork. That means somewhere between a full and empty load there must be a break even load, but how big is it? To make things worse fancy dishwashers have settings for partial loads, but what are the cut offs?
