I think the biggest problem that people have with them is that they go a bit overboard with things, like bringing your bin in by certain times or having certain paint colours and such.

True. But if it's between small petty rules and a neglected neighborhood I think I'll bring my bin by 7pm

We have a house down the road who left their bin out for a whole week because they put it out too late and it missed collection. These people also don't maintain their pavement, so I fully understand the importance of having things like this in place (we don't have them here unless you are in an actual residential complex, not just a neighbourhood). It's just a "pick your battles" thing for me.

Restrictions on HOAs are necessary though, like limits on fines, what they can control re someone's house/garden and clear guidelines re evictions

Except laws already handle all those scenarios. In fact, thats how you are supposed to handle issues, local government. Not start up a neighborhood harrassment program.

Cops, zoning laws, and city ordinances already do those things

i feel like hoa hate is akin to landlord hate…at least on the internet…most are fine…but the instances where a few get ridiculous…and thats all you hear about

We lasted 6 months before we moved because of the HOA. They literally showed up on our first day, to let us know that the moving company gave us too many movers to move us in, and that many movers were "disruptive," it was 6 movers.
