+45 I don't get people who retire/want to retire early, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Sitting around and engaging in.....I don't know, hobbies? Just doesn't ring the same. You say this like it's a bad thing. That or you just don't have any hobbies or interests besides work.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Typical NPC behavior, I know some people with similar views and they have no hobbies or recreational skills. Nor do they push themselves to find zest in life outside of their work

by CompetitionFlashy829 1 week ago

Yep I know people like this too. Wake up, drive to work, work, drive home, watch TV, bed. Repeat. Nothing else. Then they bitch about finding friends or an SO, or (insert something that involves a behavior change). NPC behavior all the way.

I have had this conversation a few times with a friend who took this stance . It usually boils down to if money was no object, i.e., rent ,bills, etc. I would live a very different life , like working out in the morning , cooking for the family , and working towards my own interests and endeavors whatever that might be, but unfortunately, money is a part of our lives, and working every day till my mid 60's for someone else to not work their entire life away seems like a no-brainer . It literally sounds like "I would rather work ( throw ) my life away instead . "

My friend did this. He's 41. He and his wife are traveling the world. They spend about 3 months a year in town

Jesus Christ there are actually people who think like this? Weed is legal Streaming services offer thousands of hours of entertainment Massage chairs exist Relax and enjoy yourself Or we could switch places and I'll do that while you keep working

My boss is like this, multi millionair owns our company has enough employees that he could never have to be at work has enough where he could retire now and never work again, however, is about to get divorced because he spends 75 hours a week at the office working still with 3 kids under 12 at home. He lives to work basically and doesn't know how or doesn't want to do anything else but work it seems.

I'm curious what you actually do for a living. Also, doesn't really sound you have hobbies/interests outside of work.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Because I dont want to work my entire life. Theres more to life than working all of it away

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's not for you to get. It's not your life, and it's not your story.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Health, exercise, hobbies. Stuff that actually gives me purpose. Look up the concept of "renaissance man" it was once encouraged to find meaning outside of work if not imperative to do so

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Retired doesn't mean not working. It means not having to work when you don't want to, and being free to work or volunteer when you do.

by veumkenna 1 week ago

Read, practice my piano, go out to the bar, go to the beach, go hiking, learn a language, spend time with my family, watch movies, go to the gym, travel, go get another degree. I don't know how you can't find things to do that aren't work

Why would someone not want to take early retirement, if it was offered to them?

by Same_Weather_8701 1 week ago

I want to retire early cause I want to be left alone in peace. To paint, or play dota and just be in silence. Life is tiring. Very tiring.

Most people who I worked with in college who were past retirement age, just worked to have something to do, I mean they work maybe 2-3 days a week at most, 20 hrs, just to get out of the house for a few hours

by CandidateStunning845 1 week ago

Working is really what gives your life meaning? I'd think work should fund life, not be life itself. Even indulging in entertainment 8 hours a day sounds more enjoyable than spending your finals years working. This opinion must be from someone really young who has not felt the effects of ageing yet.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I will be doing everything I wouldn't be doing because of work. I don't live to work, I work to live. I'll travel, play video games, play golf, spend time w/ my kids, spend time w/ family and friends. Literally anything but work. My partner works at a hospice and has never once heard anyone say they wished they worked more on their deathbed. Have you ever seen someone's headstone say "loving husband, and great lawyer"? NO.

by okonbrenda 1 week ago

I'd do some traveling, spend more time working on my music, more time reading, take some individual classes during the day. There are so many better things I could spend my time on than work.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

i mean its either that or working forever. so why not do smt u enjoy

by Bitter-Gur-1487 1 week ago

Well because for some, our life's purpose isn't to work till we die? Because of where I live and where I want to stay, I can't retire early, not unless I win a million from the lottery to put into a high yield account till I'm 60. But realistically, if I stay here till I'm 67 I can retire and be ok. Our purpose in life isn't to work. Not knocking those, such as yourself, that want to keep working because you feel a sense of purpose, but I want to enjoy the fruits of my labor. I enjoy my life mow with travel, events and things I want to do. But I do pool forward to when I am not controlled on what my days are. I don't want to have to get up at a certain time Monday through Friday. I don't want to be told what to wear Monday through Friday. I don't want to be in an office all day when it's a nice day put. I want to be able to do whatever I want, whenever I want. That's why we want to retire as early as allowed

by Anxious_Traffic 1 week ago

And I don't get people who ask this question all the time. Aside from the countless things and places in life, if you really need drive from "work", then just volunteer at a place that gives you meaning.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Travel, garden, sit in a pub with a book, get a puppy, lay on the beach, take a yoga class during the day, cook nice meals because I don't have to cook after getting home at 6, play more video games, volunteer with all the causes I'm interested in....

by Agile-Improvement 1 week ago

People who want to retire early haven't defined their entire personality based on what they do for work. However, some people have to work into their senior years for financial reasons or because they genuinely enjoy working. Is it wrong? But l, there is nothing more soul-sucking than listening to someone who only has work to talk about - whether you work with them or not.

by CapFlat6565 1 week ago

I'm sorry for you. Some people are able to endlessly entertain themselves with hobbies. I take that a step further--I can have a fulfilling day just sitting and thinking. I cannot comprehend you. If you sit me in a room with nothing to do, my brain will start rattling off stories and various contingencies for situations that haven't happened yet, unprompted. It's loud in there. And you are telling me, even with copious amounts of fun and interesting things to do surrounding you, you would not be able to enjoy yourself? By god, are you one of those extroverts I hear so much about?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Retiring from a particular job doesn't mean sitting in a rocker doing nothing - not a single retiree I know this this, myself included. Retirement often means taking a pension, giving income so that one can spend their time in activities where salary isn't a driver. One of my friends retired as a teacher, then opened a dog grooming shop. Another friend retired then became a mentor at a high school carpentry program. My own father retired, then opened an Etsy shop selling his carpentry salables. Many retirees spend their time in community volunteer activities; habitat for humanity benefits tremendously from those who retired from construction-related jobs, as does meals-on-wheels. Too many people labor under the misapprehension that if one isn't "working" that they aren't productive, which is demonstrably false. When a particular level of wealth is no longer the driver, people continue to engage in community-facing activities, but make choices that are more personally fulfilling.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Definitely unpopular. If I could, I'd retire by 30. What would I do? That's a good question but I'd actually have the time to figure that out. Try hobbies. Do creative work. Travel. I'd love to do that before I'm old

by Anonymous 1 week ago

We retired at me, 65, my husband 70. What do we do, a lot! We never sit still. I wish! :)

by cindygaylord 1 week ago

At least when I am working I know I am not only helping myself but others too Not sure if you know, but volunteering also exists, and that exists strictly for the purpose of helping out causes

by Odd-Spirit 1 week ago

If your only purpose in life is to work… that's sad. The most sad thing imo.

by damonhodkiewicz 1 week ago

I can't imagine how miserable you must be to not have anything that gives your life meaning outside of work. And I do mean miserable, the people who have legitimate dream jobs that meld their true passions and get paid for it (and also aren't slowly having their passion killed off by the industry) realize they're lucky sons of bitches and have some self awareness. Like Jesus, read a book, watch a movie, write, travel…. Do something to bring yourself some joy before it's too late.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I hate having to work and can't wait until it's finally over. Work doesn't bring any meaning to my life, it just gets in the way of me doing things I actually want to do.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Hobbies > Job Common sense. Doing what you love is more enjoyable than doing something you dont like for money.

by cormierlavon 1 week ago

Everything that matters...friends, family, personal enrichment, travel, relaxation, schooling, hobbies, etc. Work DOES NOT MATTER. Not one bit. Its what gets in the way of everything that matters (see above). Its a paycheck, and absolutely nothing more. Im 52, and have had over 40 jobs in my life. Hated every day of it. Zero benefit or enrichment from any of it.

by Normal_Bathroom_4235 1 week ago

Hell, I don't think about retiring at all, work gives me purpose, a meaning to my life People find meaning to their life doing what they enjoy. You seem to enjoy working, that's alright. Others see work as a burden and rather spend it doing what they enjoy such as hobbies. Hobbies could be a variety of things such as sports, gaming, crafts, music, etc. Hobbies can even be turned into a personal businesses.

by alessandra00 1 week ago

If I could live my life without working I 100% would. The two main reasons I would want work is if it's something I'm passionate about and makes me lots of money. Unfortunately I haven't found either. Yet, here I am, working. :(

by Tianadenesik 1 week ago

I'm like you, OP. I love what I do and can't imagine not working in some capacity.

by jakubowskiprinc 1 week ago

If I could walk away from work this second and never have to work again, do anything again. Just play games, enjoy hobbies, go out and do cool stuff, and not have to worry about money… I wouldn't even say goodbye. I'd instantly ghost my employer and never look back once.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm disabled not retired but same difference, I'm not sitting at a desk 9-5 anymore. Thanks to that, I finally have a sense of real purpose for the first time in my life (yay schizophrenia?). I've volunteered at the soup kitchen and animal shelter, I've helped organize protests, I like to "art bomb" by leaving small paintings and origami critters around local shops and restaurants for strangers to pick up and hopefully brighten their day, I help out my aging parents, I plant seeds of local plants because they're essential for the local ecosystem, I hike and cave dive. I can't always be out and about, I'm not doing all of that stuff every week or anything, but my average day spent making art and being with my loved ones and pets is plenty fulfilling. I'm guessing (hoping) that you have a job that actually does something at a company that isn't destroying the planet for profit and contributes more to society than it takes, but most jobs aren't anything close to that. There's plenty you can do you just have to be self motivated to actually do it. Adding: With the last sentence I don't mean to do the "If I can do it anyone can!" thing because that's obnoxious and ignorant, there's plenty of reasons that someone wouldn't be able to do all that stuff and I'm extremely lucky that avolition isn't one of my symptoms. But if you can motivate yourself to work then you can probably apply the same gusto to volunteering and the like. There are so many ways to contribute something. Even if it's just making a loved one smile.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Hobbies, travel, whatever they want instead of working, relaxing, reading, or 100 other things. We've been trained from birth that a job is essential to our happiness. You have to untrain that.

by Feesteda 1 week ago

I'm glad you find purpose in your work. There's a lot of things I don't get. I don't get the allure of bingo, I think the movie The Polar Express is horrible, I think NASCAR is boring, I can't stand DubStep music. But I also accept that there are some things I don't get that others enjoy, and that's OK.
