+32 Mad TV is funnier than SNL. amirite?

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

My theory: Part of SNL's appeal is that it is basically accessible to everyone. Mad TV, In Living Color, Tracy Ulman… etc. all pushed the boundaries by being edgier, but that limits the audience as well as being more susceptible to changes in comedy over time. Just spitballing here.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

also, Steven Seagal was way better on mad TV than he was on SNL

by Itchy-Two-6064 1 week ago

I can see that

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

I haven't watched MAD TV in a long time but I feel the opposite that SNL has higher highs and lower lows. did you see the Elon Musk as Wario sketch? SNL does takes risks sometimes like in its ISIS sketches for instance.

by jaroddeckow 1 week ago

I wonder how Mad would have handled ISIS

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Probably have Bobby Lee as the member of ISIS that is completely incompetent and screws everything up, also nobody acknowledges he is Korean

by Edd77 1 week ago

I would laugh. And as a trans poc I can only imagine what they'd do to my demographic πŸ˜‚πŸ˜

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

But they will call him Chinese, at least once.

by Southern-Leopard6072 1 week ago

Bet they wouldn't do the Bob ISIS Toyota sketch! Look it up on YT. It's frickin' hillarious.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Keenan is the best !

by Prestigious_Box7101 1 week ago

Agreed! Loved him all the way back to the nickelodeon days.

by Southern-Leopard6072 1 week ago

Weekend update can get a little spicy. It's the best segment snl has nowadays.

by Important-Many1816 1 week ago

This is true

by Southern-Leopard6072 1 week ago

The only thing I found funny was Heidi's genuine reaction. The acting wasn't funny.

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

I don't think they were acting , that's the thing

by Prestigious_Box7101 1 week ago

Which is why I don't think it's funny. It just seems lazy. Heidi seems like the only one in actual character of some sort, with Kenan pretending to be surprised

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Nothing cracks me up more when professionals break character ! Keenan was born with that face lol

by Prestigious_Box7101 1 week ago

I mean, there's no accounting for taste.

by Southern-Leopard6072 1 week ago

I think it's totally relevant in the context of sketch comedy

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

The QUEEN

by Prestigious_Box7101 1 week ago

70s comedy is dead. Honestly beyond dead

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yeah but they had all the time they needed to write her show. Seinfeld was live as well, but masterfully written months before it was filmed. SNL starts work on the next show on the Sunday after the previous one airs. Do you know how much pressure that has to be?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I loved MadTV and still like SNL. I think SNL is just in one of those phases in between iconic casts. I think people look back on MadTV as funnier now because all they see are the hits. There were plenty of terrible sketches and episodes of MadTV too. Regardless of which is funnier SNL has always been more impressive because they have to do it live.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I think they were definitely competitors.. What do you think this outcome would have been?

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Hmm, I see. Point taken

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Literally nothing beats Kenny Rogers Jackass.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yoooo! Whenever I hear his name, that's what I think of.

by Lemkehailee 1 week ago

"I was raised on the dairy, bitch."

by Anonymous 1 week ago

"This is the bat fetcher trick with ma teeth!"

by Lemkehailee 1 week ago

The best part about it, Kenny Rogers wasn't wild at all. No drugs, partying. Downright boring guy. Then MadTV turned him into a psychopath. Brilliant

by Theller 1 week ago

Kenny rodgers was great. Another great one is will sasso playing louie anderson on family fued

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Lowered expecta-ations!

by Zokeefe 1 week ago

I can't handle this deep-dive you're all sending me into πŸ˜‚

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

YES! In this day of reboots and revivals, I hope we get some reunion or "Where are they now" episodes

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

SNL isn't funny. I'm so cool .

by Prestigious_Box7101 1 week ago

I mean, that's kind of valid .

by Prestigious_Box7101 1 week ago

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

SNL is hit or miss

by Latter_Lab_6960 1 week ago

Or miss and miss and miss and miss in my case. I've tried.

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

They have had their moments, but they've also run flat IMO

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Mad had a great run for a few years but fell off a cliff and never recovered. SNL isn't always the best, but it's moreso a pop culture staple in a way Mad never achieved.

by TouchPowerful6060 1 week ago

No two ways about it, MadTV is hilarious. So many talents, especially the earliest days. I still think Mo Collins is one of the most talented comedic actors out there. Alex Borstein, Nicole Sullivan, Debra Wilson and of course Michael McDonald. It was must watch TV.

by Lumpy_Emotion4651 1 week ago

You mustn't forget Will Sasso!

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

I'm glad that I could inspire some happy rewatching for you!

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

It's still weird seeing Debra Wilson in games now

by Anonymous 1 week ago

3 out of 4 of my farts are funnier than SNL

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I was a bit too young for that ('89), but culturally speaking, I may have enjoyed it

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Yeah...if you like Mad TV...you will love In Living Color too. We watched every one of those when they came out. As you know, Jim Carrey emerged from In Living Color as well as the Wayans brothers and more names that became big. It was pretty consistent as well. I was in my earliest 20s when it came out. Hope you check it out and it hits for 'ya. Laughter is the best medicine for 21st Century Stress Living! lol

by Lumpy_Emotion4651 1 week ago

In living color, Mr show, and kids in the hall were the best

by Important-Many1816 1 week ago

I don't know if Mad TV was better but it was pretty underrated and undeservedly forgotten.

by jaroddeckow 1 week ago

I guess I could agree with this

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

That's unpopular?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I assumed it was, given SNL is still on the air while Mad is not..

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

That is correct

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Hahaha πŸ˜†

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Yes it was way funnier

by ted55 1 week ago

What? Prostitute garden. I do not remember this πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I'm going to have to binge this series

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

I hope this isn't a case of the Mandela effect πŸ˜…

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

By German standards, SNL is a very funny show.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Really? Maybe Germany should take it.

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Agree vs most of snl

by Mobile_Block 1 week ago

I rewatched mad TV not too long ago and honestly...I think every single skit boiled down to a stereotype and an accent. After realizing the formula, I don't think it aged as well as my nostalgia recalled.

by Top_Imagination_839 1 week ago

I'll have to give it a review..

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

That's petty. And hilarious.

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

the makeup was funny. the skit and its jokes were just okay.

by Fabulous_Remove6044 1 week ago

Yeah, they'd have gone further if Heidi were completely unaware going in and if Ryan and Mikey put more effort into staying in character.

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Mr. Show? What's Mr. Show? Also, low-brow can be good. Scary Movie. American Pie. White Chicks. Sometimes we just need a laugh.

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Not unpopular at all

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This I'm realizing πŸ˜‚

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Paint drying is funnier than some SNL.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Damn. I mean, you're not wrong.

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Love this opinion…so listen, can I have your number? Can I have it?

by Beneficial-Falcon515 1 week ago

Does anyone else loathe SNL ? I wish we had shows like Space Ghost Coast to Coast currently. That is humor to me.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Cartoon network is playing it for free on their YouTube channel for the 30th anniversary

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Kenny Rogers Jacakss is the hardest I have ever laughed in my life.

by Sframi 1 week ago

Someone else mentioned such, and after refreshing my memory with YouTube I agree

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Mad TV was pretty bad. It gave us some good actors, but it's a far cry from SNL and Living Color

by OtherwiseDatabase 1 week ago

You're entitled to your opinion

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

It always has been, I preferred it over SNL always

by dewayne22 1 week ago

MAD TV was absolute trash. It was Dollar General SNL.

by ahmadquitzon 1 week ago

You're 100% trippin lol, Stewart & Miss Swan were some peak TV characters.

by Single-Time 1 week ago

Facts.

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

If you actually understood why it's being talked about you wouldn't have such a naive take. The sketch was remarkable because of how hard the actors broke. That's not normal. The humor is seeing them break. Especially with such a dumb premise.

by wilkinsonrubye 1 week ago

I mean, to me it obviously means something.

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Thank you, I am. And I did address one of your points. I just didn't find it worth my time to elaborate on your other.

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

snl isn't very funny. ive tried to watch it now, before, the classics, the best of. I saw Norm McDonald dunk on OJ and that was pretty much the funniest SNL thing by a long shot. I get that comedy is hard and they represent the origins of a lot of famous comedians turned actors, but it's just so lame.

by Marianne18 1 week ago

SNL is the cringiest show..idk how people find it funny

by Anonymous 1 week ago

SNL isn't even funny. The actors losing it live is what everyone laughs at. WatchMojo did a list of funniest SNL skits and I watched them all. They were all done live and had the cast cracking, the skits themselves weren't that funny. There are still funny skits with the cast breaking.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Not an unpopular opinion. That's facts.

by No_Pomegranate 1 week ago

Nick O Trel.

by TrainerOtherwise 1 week ago

Well ya, madtv had key and peele

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Wouldn't it (Mad tv) be socially cancelled today?

by Robertoblock 1 week ago

sigh .. maybe not if you got the demographic in question to poke fun at themselves. Although some would probably boycott it for going "woke," as I presume it would lean that way

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

I mean. Things have changed so much since the original series in 2009! Then it showed one last time in 2016! 2009 and now is so different comedy-wise! It seems like culture has changed so dramatically!

by Robertoblock 1 week ago

Like I'm trans and poc, and while some sensitivity and tact is appreciated.. I'm tired of everyone wanting to be all politically correct and "Disney." If someone got on air and made a sketch about the awkwardness of being trans.. followed by a sketch of the awkwardness of being politically conservative, I'd blow a gasket

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Haha!

by Robertoblock 1 week ago

SnL hasn't been funny in a LONG time... I mean 15-20 years long time.. Who TF even watches SnL anymore?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Which is why I'm wondering why it's still on air

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

Exact same.. With one exception and that's Shane Gillis, but even with him, the skits they have him in have NOTHING compared to what he has done in the past.. Go look up Bob ISIS Toyota. Dude is a frickin' comedic genious!

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Big yes!! 100%! The coffee guy, Stewart, Ms. Swan

by kaileewaters 1 week ago

They will forever live in my head, rent free

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

The last several years of SNL have been very forgettable, but if you don't think that Beavis and Butthead was hilarious, you've lost any credibility when it comes to rating or comparing comedy.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

What makes your opinion any more valid than my own?

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

SNL right now is what happens when you cast people based on diversity and not talent, there I said it

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Not a chance

by Morgan70 1 week ago

SNL used to be funny until it went woke.

by Top-Meal4905 1 week ago

At least we can agree that it isn't funny

by Otislubowitz 1 week ago

how is this an unpopular opinion? this is true.
