It's your responsibility to make sure your employees have everything they need to produce cashflow for the company. You are responsible for their productivity as a whole so if you are having to constantly help with things you aren't being a very good boss.

If you didn't want the responsibility, then you shouldn't be in a management position.

Exactly, that's the whole point

My employees have no idea that I despise helping them. For the most part we all consider each other friends outside of work as well. I just generally do not like helping people and find it mentally taxing. But I've never let that feeling slip out in any way to them especially. Only my partner knows I find being asked for help annoying and they were shocked to find that out after 14 years together.

This is more of a rant than n opinion, but you are a boss. It's part of your job to help them. Just because you were expected to raise yourself doesn't mean that it's a good thing, nor is it right to expect of.others to learn to solve everything on their own.

I did make it employee centric. I actually just loathe being asked to help any adult in most situations. Unless it is a requirement to have more than one person if I'm asked anywhere to help with anything I feel annoyed. I do a great job hiding it though because nobody but my partner even knows that.

We weren't allowed inside during the day what? why?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I grew up on a farm in the 90s. We were allowed inside for food and bed time. You either had to be out working or out playing.

Read the One Minute Manager. In short, you are them solve their own problems.

Is weak the current buzzword among typical 'bootstrappy' people these days? Weird boss who rather sees people freewheeling and messing stuff up than to answer some questions. Over a hundred interruptions a day is a LOT though, i can get getting annoyed for not being able to get your own stuff done that way. Seems like the tasks descptions might needs some cristalisation. Are protocols an option? Senior employees to help the less experienced ones along?

All of my employees have been here 3+ years and we work a monthly routine. They all call me for basic updates and trivial matters, my best employee still calls me 20+ times a day for basic updates on things I would find out immediately as soon as I looked into them. "I put that file on your desk while you were at lunch/I swept and mopped the bathrooms/I created this purchase order for this invoice" The other ones just call for what I call "approval" "Is it okay if I promote this roommate? There's a note that says it's okay but I was just double checking./The painters are here so you want me to let them in?" If they cared to look into the situation even slightly they wouldn't need my approval. But most of them are gunning for raises every quarter and are so afraid of they screw something up somehow they won't get them. Which has never happened but the amount of approval calls far out weighs the notification ones.

This all still sounds like a communications thing. Maybe promote your 2 best employees to senior and give them clear and written instructions on which things they are authorized to make decicions on. Also try to see why everyone is so reluctant to do things on their own accord. Do you chew them out when something isn't done right? Do they have a clear idea of the tasks that need to be done? Do you rush the answers so you can get back to what you are doing, leaving the employee with some gaps to fill in for themselves? You may be able to improve a bunch of things fairly easy.

I made it work centric for some reason. I actually don't like being asked for help by anyone. Not just at work. Also my employees have no idea that I hate it.
