I start to do my job when I'm about to be fired, so I guess that makes sense

You may be a bullet for a semi.

Or alternatively they do their job when safely stored in a magazine as a deterrent

The bullet's job isn't to kill people, it's to be a pointy bit of mass that gets propelled from a damn gun barrel.

And that happens after it is fired

I mean, to be precise it happens when it is fired. After it's fired implies it's another action entirely, when in actuality it's the next step of the action of firing.

It becomes a pointy bit of mass after it's fired? Think that through a bit more maybe.

That's a reach. That like saying "Your job is to be a human who does paperwork." "But I don't do paperwork unless I'm in the office." "Yeah but you're always a human so you're always doing your job." The job is the action performed. Not simply existing as a human or pointy object.

Are bullets sentient in your world? I feel like I'm talking to an 8 year old.
