+41 Airplane overhead space should be reserved per seat and have partitions that will fit the allowable dimensions of the carry-on, amirite?

I've always wondered why this wasn't the standard.

Partitions themselves would reduce scarce overhead space. Just work it out amongst your fellow passengers. Also airlines should be barred from charging for a checked bag.

We waste a lot of time playing around with bags in planes. I bet it doubles the amount of time required to board or get off. Everyone should be required to travel with a standard sized overhead bag designed to fit into a designated slot with no exceptions.

I think this would actually increase boarding times

Why

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Because people would spend time trying to crush way too much stuff into their allotted space

by Aromatic_Answer_3228 1 week ago

Require everyone to have a piece of luggage that fits exactly into the spot. If you don't have one, you can get a cardboard box at the counter or by mail in advance that will fit. Hey the airlines could even charge a few bucks for one and put some advertising on them.

The reason they don't do this is because it would be a net waste of space since a fair number of fliers don't have carry on bags at all and those spaces would go empty.

IDK what airline you are flying but last I flew on American, they had you measuring out your bag before you got on the plane for anyone not carrying a backpack. A lot of people were forced to put their bags in the underside of the plane. I get why. Some people had duffel bags the size of my checked in bag (23 kilos).

Partitions will result in less overhead space for everyone, meaning the sizes will need to change. There's little to gain from this

The carry on dimensions would shrink and even still flight crew need to put their things up there and the emergency stuff is up there as well. Even with that thered still be people who wont be able to have their carry on assuming everyone brings one.

Truth

Or you could be Spirit Airlines and charge $80 each way for a carry on. I got so duped.

Too logical to be unpopular.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

What if everyone doesn't have a carry-on? Airlines typically aren't fans of unused space.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

A lot of the back overhead compartments have airplane equipment in them and can't be used by customers.

I never use overhead space, so then it would just end up as wasted space. Although I suppose people could just ask. I do agree that the size of the bags some people try to take on board are ridiculous and there should be a limit on bag size.

by Hudsonneha 1 week ago

And you'll still have that one guy that puts his bag in the wrong row.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Those partitions would screw everyone over and you'll end up with less space. If someone's bag is a bit smaller than the dimensions, the extra space would just be wasted.

That's what under seat is for and also I don't think this is an unpopular opinion.

by lindsaysmith 1 week ago

under seat That's personal items and not carry ons. Most airlines allow passengers to bring one of each.

by Capable-Tangerine149 1 week ago

Yes. People should have to put their crap above their own seat.

by travisrunolfsso 1 week ago

That would lower the efficiency of that already limited storage space even further. And airlines will not enforce their luggage norms too harsh because there's competition and people will avoid flying with a company that's hostile to them.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Airlines absolutely will enforce it especially if they can get away with charging you for checking your bag at the gate.

by Koepplinnea 1 week ago

Generally agree with you, but what happens when one individual doesn't need their section so it goes empty while another person has to check their bag because there isn't enough space for everyone?
