+24 There's nothing wrong with eating most of your meals from restaurants, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The worst food I cook at home is healthier than anything I get at restaurants. That's the only reason I don't do it every day

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yeah that's irresponsible. I'm fortunate to not have debt (well 12 more years on my mortgage but I pay that every month) and I have strong savings

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Is this an unpopular opinion? I agree wholeheartedly. If you can afford it and enjoy it; then by all means.

by No-Mathematician5979 1 week ago

I think it is. The unpopularity stems from people judging how others' spend/save their money. I realize I could spend the time/energy and get my meal cost down to a few dollars, but it's not worth the time/energy to me personally

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't think anyone hates people who do it. its just people don't understand why you would spend your money on such things when its cheaper to do it and/or use your money for other stuff. but in the end, its your money, spend it how you wish as long as it doesn't affect someone else.

People simply don't understand the value of time, for many people putting the time making your own food saves less money then what would have been earned if that time was put into their job.

by Sea-Vermicelli2589 1 week ago

I don't take it as hate - I agree with you, people don't understand why. I tried to answer that: I'm paying for convenience. I totally understand it's a luxury and I'm privileged, but it helps my local economy and saves me time. I'm okay with the expense personally, and I don't think anyone should feel guilty for spending $500-$600/mo on food if they can responsibly afford that.

Oh I ment it more along the lines of.... going out to dinner doesn't equate to someone getting stabbed because he bought dinner "on someone's turf" like buying illegal drugs.

honestly i don't care if someone eats at restaurant every day or not. i just sideye when people complain and act confused or hopeless about their finance and then reveal that they are eating at restaurant every day but it's the lack of introspection that bugs me not just the eating at restaurant.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

TBH I'm impressed you order in that frequently and only spend $600/month

by hyattgisselle 1 week ago

It's honestly more cost effective for me. I'll buy a large pizza, and eat it over 3 or 4 days. Or, I'll buy a couple entrees from a restaurant, and stretch it over a few meals. I don't have to worry about buying ingredients, making a meal, then figuring out how to use the rest of the ingredients.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yeah, keep telling yourself you spend $600 each on takeout in a month.

by Abshiregeorgian 1 week ago

I don't think this is unpopular at all. Of course there's nothing wrong with it, if you can afford it. If you're going to do this and then cry about how expensive everything is and how broke you are, then it's a problem.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If you can afford it comfortably yes BUT if you can't afford it comfortably, there is something wrong with eating out for most of your meals

by Anonymous 1 week ago

$600 a month for 2 people wouldn't be an absurd grocery bill where I live. We're a family of 4, I cook most meals and we spend about $300 a week in groceries. That includes paper goods and cleaning supplies, but you're still not that far off.

by annalisedietric 1 week ago

I think they meant 600 each for a total of 1200. Otherwise they'd be averaging 10 dollars a day eating out which seems awful low. If I am correct, that means they spend on 2 people what you spend on 4. I'm not saying this as any sort of judgement as I agree with the people saying if you can afford it go for it, just doing the math based on what I interpreted it as.

If you can afford it and it makes you happy, that's great and the haters can hate.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This is what my parents do

I hate cooking. I am also a workaholic. I travel a lot. No, it's no problem to eat from restaurants most of meals. And yes, it is possible to keep it healthy with so many options nowadays. Yes, it's more expensive. But that's why I work for - among other reasons.

by Ewelch 1 week ago

This is not unpopular

by Anonymous 1 week ago

In a few years when you're diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes, or a fatty liver, it will be directly attributes to your lifestyle of eating out every night.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If you factor in time saved not shopping, driving to grocery store, and cooking, and the fact that I throw too much produce away when I do, plus the fact that I get two actual meal portions out of a restaurant meal, I agree that it's not as big am expense as it seems. To justify the delivery expense I'll often add an extra side salad or veggies or something else inexpensive and healthy that stretches the meal to 3 meals 🤷‍♀️. I'm going through chemo right now so money is tight but energy and time is even tighter (I'm still working a lot) so I've been doing more of this and honestly I think it's a net win. My partner appreciates not having to be the de facto cook or shopper or delivery guy too since he's working and providing support (rides, household help, emotional etc) to me. If it works for you rock on with the unpopular choice!

by obashirian 1 week ago

the problem with doing it all the time is that they put a lot of salt and butter into the meal (or other ingredients that are unhealthy) that you dont see

by Familiar-Matter 1 week ago

You make a great point on salt. I'm less concerned with fats but salt and sugar is way higher eating out. I have normal blood pressure and do try to monitor intake.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You might not be wasting food, but you are wasting money (your choice) This would be like someone flying private, and being like "look no empty seats I'm not wasting resources" L

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I read this as "there's no reason not to finish most of your meal", as opposed to taking half home.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I think you misunderstand. Most of the time I'm ordering carryout/delivery. And if I do eat-in and have leftovers, I take them home
