+50 One of the biggest dangers of Antarctica, a land comprised nearly entirely of freshwater, is dehydration, amirite?

by Nearby_Perspective66 1 week ago

Well, Antarctica is the largest desert of the world, so there's that.

It's also the wettest place on Earth!

Why can't you just eat the ice?

Dehydration won't kill you? That's like, one of the main things that kills us...

My experience at the South Pole is that the -40 degree weather is much more likely to kill you than dehydration. Well, sure, I did drink half a gallon a day, but...

It's not, though. You can hydrate yourself by eating the snow; that's what penguins do.

by ContributionSolid 1 week ago

You just get dehydrated faster, we're not Penguins. You need to melt it against your body1st or your expand more energy melting the snow than it is worth.

I believe that's an urban myth, eating snow is not dehydrating. Might still kill you via hypothermia, so who really cares, but you aren't losing hydration.

Yeah I'm pretty sure they have the explanation down but came to the wrong conclusion. It definitely cools your body temp from inside which is why hypothermia can act faster, but you won't die from dehydration as far as I know
