Life uh finds a whey

by Fabulous-Media 1 week ago

exactly someone tried to claim the G didn't stand for Graphics and i googled to be sure it does, so this i agree with, I say GIF i have never said Jif

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The creator says JIF. Therefore it stands for "Juraphics Interchange Format". Because the creator is an idiot.

How do you pronounce NATO? Or NASA? The pronunciation of the words in an initialism do not decide the pronunciation of the initialism.

by Ivahwhite 1 week ago

The individual words in an acronym have no bearing on the pronunciation though. An acronym for all intents and purposes is it's own word. See examples like laser (the A stands for amplification, the S for stimulated, and the e for emission. It's not pronounced "lasseer". Same with something like scuba, it's not pronounced "scubba"). There are many words in English where a soft G precedes an I, like giraffe, gist, gin, ginseng, ginger, gingivitis, gibberish, giant, etc. Nothing idiotic about it really. There are also many words with a hard G preceding an I. It really could go either way, and if the creator of the word says it one way, that's probably the way it's pronounced. In my opinion it's just another word with multiple pronunciations, and it really isn't a big deal lol

by Kylelebsack 1 week ago

Had me in the first half, ngl. I was going to say, the creator doesn't get to choose how English is pronounced. If he wants to be called a jif, we can start spelling it that way too. If he wants it to be a gif, everyone needs to pronounce it that way. Spelling and pronunciation go together, it's not like you can pick then separately. Can I say that my name is Eric, and it's pronounced "Robert"? You'd call me an idiot, because that's not how language works

by henriette27 1 week ago

There are people named Sean who say it's pronounced "Shawn"

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Insulting the Irish will Seamus all.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Then shouldn't Sean be pronounced like Shane?

by thora35 1 week ago

It was a big tongue in cheek, my point is that at least "g" making the j sound exists in other words in English, which is not really the case with Sean -> Shawn

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Oh, my b. I see your point

by henriette27 1 week ago

Erm i bring up tom scott who said the speakers and not the creator of a word decide how it's pronounced 🔥

The g in gif is pronounced like the g in garage and garbage

by Anonymous 1 week ago

More like the g in gin

by No-Cicada 1 week ago

It's pronounced like the G in gist or giraffe.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

G in graphic

It's soda, not pop. Oh wait, wrong pedantic argument

by Morartreva 1 week ago

I remembered when I moved to Texas someone asked me what kind of Coke I wanted. how was very confused like just coke the one with sugar in it. then I learned in that part of Texas that it's not soda or pop it's Coke.

Ghoti is pronounced fish apparently

And as we all know, pronunciations in English always make perfect, logical sense.

My best friends name is Gerri, pronounced like Jerry.

GIF actually stands for George is French

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Language being a malleable thing that can shift by region, culture, and time, doesn't change the fact that in this culture and time, it's pronounced with a hard "g".

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Languages need to have hard conventions, and those who do not follow those conventions should be ostracized.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Many, such as German, do. However, English is the Wild West and rules are made up and abandoned on a whim.

by Working_Forever5652 1 week ago

The problem is that the creator doesn't get to choose how English is pronounced. If he wants it to be called a jif, we can start spelling it that way. If he wants it to be a gif, everyone needs to pronounce it that way. Spelling and pronunciation go together. It's not like you can choose them individually. Can I say that my name is spelled "Eric", but pronounced "Robert"? You'd call me an idiot, because that's not how language works

by henriette27 1 week ago

Except it's not the only way "g" is pronounced and you're wrong. But other than that spot on.

by PuzzleheadedGas 1 week ago

but gin is OK right? giraffe grate gyrate gel and the G itself.

by ExtensionNo8253 1 week ago

That's because they're stupid.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Honestly never heard it pronounced "jif". Didn't know that was a thing, but yes, I agree it is silly to call a GIF peanut butter.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This is wrong. It does not stand for ‚Graphic Interchange Format‘. It stands for ‚Graphics Interchange Format‘. Which changes nothing. I agree with that pronunciation logic.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Laser is pronounced lah-SEER because if you said it correctly (the way the letters sound in their respective words) it sounds like that

by Anonymous 1 week ago

And it's SCUH BAA not Scooo Buh Since underwater isn't pronounced oonderwater and apparatus isn't pronounced uhpparatus. This is how we do acronyms right??? SMH

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You get it

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's not a discussion it's just a meme

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Clearly not from the Netherlands. Hard G's make everything sound better.

Has no one watched Big Bang Theory????

by Prestigious_Trip_632 1 week ago

Try a hard Dutch G sound.

by EarlyBackground 1 week ago

It doesn't HAVE to be a hard G just because it is spelt closely to gift (e.g. gin vs. grin) The letters in the acronym don't need to be based on how they sound in their respective word (the S in "Laser" stands for "Stimulated" but has a /z/ sound)

by camronbergstrom 1 week ago

giraffe.

by cornelius40 1 week ago

Just like the hard g in giraffe right? The creator of it says soft g.

by Yundtterrance 1 week ago

By that logic the P in JPEG makes the F sound for Photographic and should be pronounced JayFeg?

by Shanie70 1 week ago

Yes, the G stands for graphical, so anything other than a hard G just makes zero sense.

by vonruedenkarli 1 week ago

Not exactly related but do people pronounce GTA - the game with a hard G

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Who is to say that the "t" at the end of "gift" is what makes it a hard "g" in the first place?

by Fast_Initiative 1 week ago

Incorrect, the creator says otherwise. Please tell me how you pronounce gin? Or gist?

by No-Cicada 1 week ago

How do you pronounce graphics?

by MoneyRuin6785 1 week ago

Jraphics

by Excellent_Wafer_7078 1 week ago

Gift is a word, not an acronym. I suggest you start there in understanding why it's not "just gift without the t" How do you pronounce the acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation?

by Working_Forever5652 1 week ago

How do you pronounce the acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation? I pronounce it pew pew.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Gee-iff?

by Big-Watch 1 week ago

Knife should be still with a hard K because it makes sense to me is your argument. The guy that designed and built format gets to decide how it's pronounced just like you decide how your last name or first name is pronounced.

by ExtensionNo8253 1 week ago

Take your politics elsewhere.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Take your corgi somewhere, it looks upset

by Anonymous 1 week ago

That's the best you got? Sad.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The man who invented it says its jif, so It's jif. Get over it.

by SettingWhole1684 1 week ago

Don't you mean Jet over it?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

What about gin? The alcohol? It's the same argument as "gift" being one letter away. I say "jiff" because it just sounds better. Our language is not consistent enough to take such a hard stance.
