+40 Grilled Cheese made with American/Kraft Slices tastes better than "real" cheese, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

That's because American cheese is designed to soften and melt relatively quickly in an even, creamy layer. It's literally made for what you're talking about.

by daisha18 1 week ago

Did you learn that one from chef Voldemort?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

wtf i wouldn't have gotten this reference if i didn't watch The Menu 2 days ago lol

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I think I did.... and I also agree as of a couple days ago

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yep it's called sodium citrate and is present in kraft singles! It's an emulsifier and widely used in creamy mac and cheese

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This is why Raclette cheese is also great for this purpose or for burgers - it's only purpose in life is to be melted and taste delicious.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Did you know you can just buy American cheese that's real cheese? (not cheese product). Kraft even sells this kind as well.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

American cheese is really just cheddar with emulsifiers. As long as it's individually wrapped, it'll usually do great in a GC.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

No, there's actually American pasteurized processed cheese product which is a separate food from American cheese. The Traditional Kraft singles are cheese product, however you can get a separate type of Kraft (and other brands) cheese that's actually categorized by the FDA as cheese.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

That's how my grandma made them when I was growing up

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Mine always added mayo, sometimes using it in place of butter too.

by Designer-Falcon 1 week ago

Discovered mayo in grilled cheese sandwiches not long ago. I've been missing out

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Genuinely curious: how many other types of cheese have you tried before forming that opinion? I love Grilled Cheese, but I also happen to be French and make them with many different sort of cheese (not only from France, but also Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, even the UK) and I'm pretty sure there are options among those you'd prefer to Kraft Slices.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

My favorite combo is a mix of sharp cheddar with havarti. Havarti adds the creamy stretchyness with cheddars flavor.

by Ok-Contribution4699 1 week ago

For Americans Kraft singles are the grilled cheese choice for nostalgia more than anything. There's absolutely better cheese choices but nostalgia is a hell of a drug

by Careless_Reality5004 1 week ago

The krafts melt so good. If I want quality cheese I'll eat quality cheese. That's not the goal with a grilled cheese.

by Big_Temperature_6764 1 week ago

It's cheap enough and probably never goes bad so I always have some in the fridge

by Careless_Reality5004 1 week ago

This guy is essentially saying that he likes his grilled cheesed quickly melted, which is what american cheese was designed for.

by Fheller 1 week ago

I love some fancy cheeses. Like I'll drop money on nice cheese. But if I want grilled cheese usually I want that basic comfort food. Some Kraft singles grilled cheese and tomato soup, fire. That or on a cheeseburger is the only ways I'd eat them.

by Big_Temperature_6764 1 week ago

American is the superior. The other cheeses are great but at that point you're out of the realm of grilled cheese. A grilled cheese should be super basic and simple, and an American cheese.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

A grilled cheese should be the way you want to make them. Could be completed, could be simple. Depends on the person

by BusinessMaize 1 week ago

No not at all. Changing up a grilled cheese means it's another sandwich entirely.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I dont think grilled cheese has "must be simple" as part of the definition. Its just the connotation

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You can use Sodium citrate to give real cheese the melting properties and texture of American cheese. I usually make a cheese blend out of vintage cheddar, parmesan, gouda and gruyere.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Science chef ! I picture a lab coat and a chefs hat.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Nah, you just heat a little water in a pan, add the sodium citrate and stir until it dissolves. Then add your grated cheese a bit at a time until it's all melted together. Then pour into a mold and refrigerate. You can then cut slices off to make a grilled cheese or Mac & cheese. Except it'll actually taste of quality cheese instead of plastic

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Land of lakes American cheese is banging

by Aryannahintz 1 week ago

This is what I buy from the deli counter. Kraft singles are garbage.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Fr you got good taste

by Aryannahintz 1 week ago

Agreed. Even though I prefer real cheese any other time.

by Kunzekathleen 1 week ago

nah man, give a me a grilled cheese on sourdough with sharp cheddar any day

by Longjumping-Bee-4906 1 week ago

Heretical blasphemer

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Where you your chee, Danny?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

American cheese is better than low quality "government cheese". But real quality cheese is better than American cheese

by Anonymous 1 week ago

U need American and real cheese IMO

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The American cheese does help the real cheese melt more evenly, for sure.

by FunInitial 1 week ago

American and sharp cheddar together is god tier

by Much_Ad 1 week ago

I agree with the american cheese argument but not the brand. I prefer Kroger Nice 'N' Cheesy, I dislike Kraft and Velveeta.

by Dependent-Goose 1 week ago

Side note, have you ever tried dipping your sandwich in cream of mushroom soup? πŸ˜™πŸ‘Œ

by Dependent-Goose 1 week ago

Grilled cheese goes with tomato soup.

by Rosina62 1 week ago

If the goals the have melts creamy cheese American cheese is the best. That's what it's made for. "But it's like plastic !" Yeah that plasticy texture is what makes it melty!

by heathcotemarcel 1 week ago

I watched a grilled cheese video made by j kenji lopez alt where he mentions he layers 3 or 4 kinds of whatever he has + American so you get the goo and the flavor (paraphrased). That's been my go to

by Bertram57 1 week ago

It's what they are meant for. They melt really good, even for burgers they are pretty solid options.

by Ok_Break 1 week ago

Pretty sure that's what a grilled cheese sandwich is. That's like saying a burger with a beef patty is better than a burger with a fish patty.

by molly35 1 week ago

My boyfriend and I were just talking about this last night because we made cheeseburgers with Kraft singles. They're the best for burgers & grilled cheese, but garbage for literally anything else

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Now start going to the deli counter and getting real American cheese like boars head, not the fake stuff like Kraft. Anyone saying other cheeses are better are foolish.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Damn that's tastes good even for me as a European…. Gosh now that I saw this I can't their Mac n cheese out of my head 😭

by Regular-Claim 1 week ago

everyone knows this. not unpopular

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Needs to have Lee and perrins on it at least. Also prefer it don't using the grill setting on the oven than in a pan

by Salty_Share 1 week ago

Reverse of this would be unpopular

by Desperate-Category 1 week ago

That's not a grilled cheese that's a chilled grease!

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This is a specific type of grilled cheese, and must be on white sandwich bread. A real grilled cheese on a crusty baguette with different cheeses is pretty special also.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

No

by Jayceluettgen 1 week ago

No. Sharp Cheddar or go home. Extra butter on the bread

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Nah real cheese tastes better, but American cheese is meltier. American cheese is pretty much a bit of real cheese diluted in fat and wax to make it better for melting like on a grilled cheese. It tastes like very diluted real cheese

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yo most people suck at cooking, so will agree with this...but this should be way more unpopular

by Axel46 1 week ago

It's 100% because it's American.

by Hadleyleannon 1 week ago

Grilled cheese was invented for Kraft slices. Yes an Artisanal grilled cheese with cheddar or havarti or expensive melting cheeses is always a nice treat, THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE GRILLED CHEESE.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Shredded parmesan cheese and mayo not butter with a dash of salt or garlic powder to make a perfect Garlic Bread Grilled Cheese.

by Present_Maybe 1 week ago

Throw some pepperoni on it when you use parmasan cheese.

by Present_Maybe 1 week ago

You're right, this is unpopular because it absolutely does not taste better. Unless you are aggressively on a processed, no whole food diet. Kraft slices taste nasty. But if you are living on freezer food, boxed mac and cheese and other processed food it wouldn't be a noticeable taste because your palate is used to it and the texture would seem better.

by Forward_Fly178 1 week ago

Ok but American deli cheese is so much richer and creamier than Kraft singles. The plastic wrapped stuff does last forever in the refrigerator though, and for grilled cheese purposes works very well.

by TopSwitch 1 week ago

There's a reason that most everyone makes it that way. Also convenience. I personally despise American cheese and use other cheeses on my grilled cheese

by Uwatsica 1 week ago

Have you had Welsh Rarebit? No?

by Sensitive-Aioli 1 week ago

You are correct and that is the only thing it is good for.

by Annual_Loquat5256 1 week ago

This is NOT an unpopular opinion.... most people think this as well

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Wait till you discover good American cheese. Like Land o Lakes.

by Maggieprice 1 week ago

American cheese is real cheese, typically a blend of Colby and cheddar, along with an emulsifier to get them to play well together. The individually wrapped things? Nah fam, that ain't it.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I agree but There's more than enough emulsifiers in a craft single to emulsify other real cheese when melted together for Mac and cheese. You can buy a cheese emulsifier separate and premelt and let cool a bit with any cheese you like to use on a good grilled cheese.

by ProfessionalWide 1 week ago

You need some good cheese then

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Agreed completely, I don't think this is unpopular. My only change would be that if you replace the American cheese with a good cheddar, and add some bacon and maybe a bit of fried onions and tomatoes, it'll be even better.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Nope. Grilled cheese tastes better with shredded cheese. πŸ‘Œ

by Mundane-Pollution 1 week ago

You need deli American cheese

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Munster is the best!!!!

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Growing up I assumed the only reason it existed was to be cheap. Still remember the first time I was asked if I wanted American or cheddar and was in shock that anyone would ever pick American for anything.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Pass. I always prefer, butter on sourdough bread with Colby jack and provolone. 🀌🏼

by Anonymous 1 week ago

What is this "real" cheese you speak of? Like any cheese there is in existence (because you tried them all) or do you mean Gouda or Cheddar?

by Kooky_Exam 1 week ago

That stuff is great on hamburgers and in grilled cheese sandwiches. Also dog treats. My dog loves it. That's pretty much the only valid uses.

by Hot_Hand 1 week ago

You do you, but I prefer mine with pepper jack.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Try using 2 day old sourdough and fry with mayo instead of butter. Trust.

by Proud-Ad-9811 1 week ago

I think most people that really know cheese and aren't just snobs would agree although I like using multiple cheeses in grilled cheese but a slice of American is required

by Apart_Employ 1 week ago

I'm with you.

by Allancorkery 1 week ago

There's something that hits different in a Wonderbread Kraft singles grilled cheese.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Same for ham and cheese omelet.

by Ok-Engineer-9391 1 week ago

American "food" enjoyers

by GiraffeOpposite 1 week ago

American food is bomb af

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I literally just had one recently and it was gross. That type of cheese doesn't taste good. Proper cheese is the way to go.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Goat cheese πŸ§€

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Nah, real cheese is better

by Ottisgibson 1 week ago

I agree but grilled cheese is one of the only things Kraft singles or Velveeta is good for. It does melt really easy. With real cheese you have to do a little more work but the result is better.

by Purple-Toe2041 1 week ago

I use them on burgers, that's pretty much it

by Ottisgibson 1 week ago

No, American cheese suck

by Alessandraharri 1 week ago

American cheese is ass

by Bechtelarkristi 1 week ago

Nah pretty popular dude

by Anonymous 1 week ago

yeah another popular opinion, congrats. that is like literally the only reason for those processed cheese slices as far as i am concerned

by Marielle51 1 week ago

I don't care what cheese you use but mine needs to be on rye bread.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Try provalone. Cheese designed for burgs.

by Anonymous 1 week ago
