-34 Food shouldn't be judged based on how clean/messy it is to eat. amirite?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

if it's more inconvenience than it's worth for the actual flavor of the food then it definitely makes the food less appetizing, sure messy foods can be good but if i have to clean off my entire face and can't touch anything until i wash my hands for some food that's only kind of okay then it definitely isn't worth the experience

by dzulauf 2 weeks ago

Yea I agree that was the point I pointed out a burger with cheese drenched in cheese is stupid and is excluded in this rule imo.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

the burger in cheese is extreme but even regular chicken wings are often more messy than they're worth from a lot of places imo

by dzulauf 2 weeks ago

Wet wings will only ever get 3 fingers dirty and your mouth if your not careful just lick your fingers wipe your mouth or be careful

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

So the rule only applies to food you randomly pick

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

messiness is just one category, along with taste, nutrition, price, etc., that each contribute to an items overall appeal. anyway, this is a you problem and it is solved by 3 words. adding "by taste alone" to any judgement should get you on the same page.

by wunschjayne 2 weeks ago

Oh so it shouldn't be judged for being messy unless it's too messy, and the qualifier for being too messy is…? I'm gonna judge it. It's one of many factors to judge food on. Wings for example are messy but taste good, so I'd dock a point and move on. The cheesy burger is really messy but still tastes good, I'd dock two points or something.

by Rschultz 2 weeks ago

But how does something being messy affect flavor and taste? If you get it every where that's on you. And can't you just clean up or you don't have napkins or a sink?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

The messiness is likely a reason why they personally didn't have a good experience with it. This is slightly different but crab is tasty but it's so frustrating to eat that it ruins the experience for me

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Yeah that's a whole process and it's not even that good to be doing all that 😂 I'll take my imitation crab and go about my day.

by Ok-Weight-8281 2 weeks ago

It doesn't matter how good something tastes - if eating it is a chore, some people will be turned off by that.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It's not a chore tho you never had a sloppy burger with an egg? Sure it's messy but still great. Calling it a chore is an extreme exaggeration.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I have never in my life gotten full of crab. I just get tired of the chore of getting more meat out of the shell. It's fine for you to dismiss any part of the dining experience you want to. It's weird to try to convince others the things they care about they shouldn't.

by Unusual-Champion 2 weeks ago

That's the beautiful thing about being a human. We all perceive the world around us completely differently. Personally, I don't mind messy food at all, sometimes it's even a positive! For some people, its just not an enjoyable experience though. It becomes a chore and of course lowers their overall rating of the food. But who cares, so what? So long as no one's judging you, why judge them? If you can't comprehend that other people experience things differently and feel differently than you, you got bigger issues.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Are flavour and taste the only things that matter when it comes to food? To me they are only one part. Is it healthy? Does it fill me up? How much does it cost? Stuff like that. They're all factors. So while I'm not judging the flavour of the food based on it being messy, I can certainly judge the food as a whole. Me having to clean up after eating is an action I'd rather avoid, but I am willing to do for things that taste good enough. For example I like wings so I'll deal with saucy fingers. Ribs however, I'm just not a fan, the messiness pushes it over the edge for me, and the flavour isn't good enough.

by Rschultz 2 weeks ago

Personally getting really messy or having to clean up affects my enjoyment of the total experience. Especially if kids are involved, messy with young kids doesn't mean washing your hands when you are done, it means getting out the mop and scrubbing the walls....

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

If I were to repeatedly punch down on your burger you're saying you wouldn't mind as it hasn't affected the flavour or taste?

by LectureGrand2651 2 weeks ago

Someone's skin in my burger a mashing the flavors would definitely effect the flavor. I'm just being a smart ass I get it maybe my argument wasn't the best

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

There's more to food than just taste

by CowOnly3033 2 weeks ago

Flavor isn't the only thing you judge food on. It's the experience. It's the presentation. And it's your own person taste. If you like messy food then you can give it a high rank. If I don't like messy food then I won't. And when I read a review and someone says it's messy I will be thankful for them warning me and I won't order it.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

You aren't just judging the flavor, you're judging the experience of the meal as a whole.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Haha really!? 😂😂😂😂😂

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Oh I originally read it as you DID lose so much money lol

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

That's a... reach.

by jammieheller 2 weeks ago

It affects my enjoyment while eating it. The food can be delicious but if it's a pain to eat, I'm not going to order it again or recommend it to others.

by Crazy_Asparagus4316 2 weeks ago

I went to a seafood boil place where the crab came in a bag with garlic butter and corn and potatoes The food itself was delicious. I's happily go back there. My mom will never go back there because she says it was too messy

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

They didn't give you the plastic gloves?

by ComfortableFuture 2 weeks ago

Was about to say, a good southern/cajun seafood boil place will give you all sorts of protective gear, like when I went I basically just had to take off the gloves and bib, wash my face, and I was clean and good to go

by Cassinnova 2 weeks ago

Goddamn i want some cajun food where i need PPE to eat

by Austen54 2 weeks ago

Someone had to ask for them at some point It was my first time there so I didn't know about the gloves. We all got the bibs though

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I mean it is an opinion

by Better_Space_5320 2 weeks ago

Often the messiest food is the tastiest

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Durians have entered your chat.

by macymarquardt 2 weeks ago

Oooh no they don't need to enter the chat AT ALL 🤣

by schinnerjulius 2 weeks ago

no they havent they taste like banana onions 😭

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

And if you don't mind could they kindly leave the chat again before some bright spark gets the idea to open one?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

So many haters here. More Musang King for me

by Miserable_Agent 2 weeks ago

Are durians that messy tho? They're just pungent.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It's hella mushy for a fruit and will get all over your hand. Finger licking good though.

by macymarquardt 2 weeks ago

I think a soggy burger isn't a good burger and effects flavor because a soggy burger isn't cooked right so I can agree. But even if a perfect burger will get soggy if it takes a hour to eat so it depends at some point that's your fault.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

A soggy burger isn't cooked right? What does that even mean? The quality of the bun has nothing to do with how it's cooked. And obviously if you leave it an hour and it gets soggy that's your own fault, but literally no-one would blame the burger for that anyway, so what are you even talking about?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

My exact point if a burger is falling apart it was not made correctly and in that case it would affect flavor.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I'll stick to how it tastes, smells, and looks.

by farrellcrawford 2 weeks ago

Taste/smell > looks.. I've been tricked too many times.. and paid way too much in the past.. Spending tike on looks

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I guess I should have wrote "in that order" at the end shrug

by farrellcrawford 2 weeks ago

Texture overrides taste/smell for me. It might taste great but can't get over how it feels.

by ExcellentFuture897 2 weeks ago

The way our brains work.. lol.. each an individual

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I don't rate food at all, but given the choice I'll select stuff that doesn't get all over the goddamn place.

by sofiabergnaum 2 weeks ago

Oh I hate food that's messy! I go out of my way but to order it. I don't like eating with my hands/fingers usually, except maybe burgers. And I have a beard and hate getting stuff in it.

by Inner_Resist_2645 2 weeks ago

I also HATE touching food. I will use chop sticks for chips and popcorn because I cannot stand the dust

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

This is wild to me. Is it like a sensory thing?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

depends on the kind of food but most foods that you can eat with your eat without ustensils leave your hands feeling either greasy or "dirty", it gives me the same feeling as when i come back home after having gone through transports etc. you feel the dirt on your hands and it's very unpleasant

by Logical_Pollution 2 weeks ago

What does gone through transports mean?

by Unusual-Champion 2 weeks ago

I like doing things while i eat so i like to keep my hands clean i still wash my hands all the time.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

100% but only if I'm going to eat it hahaha. I'm fine with touching dirt or whatever. Just the act of eating

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It's weird because I'll eat wings and things with my hands but I'll hate every moment. Which is why I wear gloves. I only do this at home though because it's embarrassing If I must use my fingers without wearing gloves in public, I won't use anything more than my thumb and index finger (pincer grasp).

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It's not solely about hygiene. I'm referring to sensory

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I use a fork for oreos, just stick it in the middle and now I can eat them without getting my fingers in the milk. I also eat wings with a fork and knife on the rare occasion I have wings, I hate the dirty hands feeling

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Brains are weird hahaha

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

How do you eat wings with a knife and fork? I have found using a strip the meat off the bone with fingers method far superior to eating the normal way.

by Unusual-Champion 1 week ago

I sort of agree I think it's situational. First date absolutely no messy food. Eating at home where I can clean myself and not look disgusting to anyone sure messy food. Everything else is on a spectrum. Beards do complicate eating certain foods.

by Unusual-Champion 1 week ago

Do you eat pizza with a fork and knife too?

by Early-Patience1107 1 week ago

i'm currently eating pizza with a fork and knife and had to wait to be able to write this reply.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

And then I don't buy that companys pizza again. Pizza is eaten in a pizza restaurant / pizzería. Or take away for emergencies.

by Noah20 1 week ago

i do, to avoid greasy fingers and to eat slower

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Of course! I eat it too fast with my hands.

by Inner_Resist_2645 1 week ago

Real pizza? Yes. Murican thing? Why eat that?

by Noah20 1 week ago

Messiness should absolutely be judged by messiness (among other things). Judge it by all qualities, some just matter less to some people

by kuhlmangarrett 1 week ago

But the messiness doesn't affect flavor at all and you can clean up afterwards

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You said rating food, not flavor. Food is more than just how it tastes. Texture is incredibly important. Looks can matter too. And so is ease of eating/clean up afterwards

by kuhlmangarrett 1 week ago

BBQ and frito pies.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Says someone who has never cleaned up after kids. 10/10 unpopular opinion for this mother of 3 toddlers.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Presentation matters. Could be absolutely delicious but if it looks like slop or is hard/messy to eat that detracts from the taste.

by Powerful-Champion 1 week ago

I disagree with this just because it's messy doesn't affect taste that's literally a fact and you can be careful and not make a mess also a fact and just clean up after also a fact.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

In a messy burger, for example, you rarely get the full taste with one bite. Things will slip around and fall off on one side, the bun disintegrates, and in the end you can pick the pieces from your plate where other, less messy burgers are a tastier experience because you can TASTE all the ingredients in one bite. This is true whether you eat it with your hands or knife and fork, too. Even when they have those sticks stuck in the middle of the burger to keep things in place, some are much more messy than others. It's a FACT that the messiness influences the taste.

by Glass_Ad_6962 1 week ago

Fast "food" is messy often, due to sauces/cheese coming from packets. Good food can be eaten with a fork/sticks/spoon. Eating with hands is dirty and uncivilized.

by Noah20 1 week ago

No it's not, what an incredibly ignorant things to say. Many countries use their hands to eat. If it's dirty then you ought to wash your hands more. If it's your preference to avoid eating in the manner, that's fine. But labelling it as uncivilised is so wrong dude.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Many countries use their hands to eat Yes, I know.

by Noah20 1 week ago

Using your hands is dirty so do you not was your hands how is it uncivilized Mr.manners himself basically the face of being proper says it's ok.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

i wouldn't purposefully order messy food then complain about how messy it was. that's weird lol but i do judge based on unexpected messiness because then i'm too focused on keeping mess free and less focused on enjoying my food. which makes me sad.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Who's judging food?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Everyone. Everyone has an opinion on the food they eat that's judging it

by Anonymous 1 week ago

But its not by how messy it is

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I mean, I have 3 toddlers and my number 1 criteria for cooking dinner is 'will this take more than an hour to clean up after'

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yeah, if you know you'll have to clean up a lot afterwards, the mess and the taste should at least be balanced.

by Glass_Ad_6962 1 week ago

Please give examples, idk what you're talking about

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't know how to make this more clear. People judge the food they eat by how messy it is I don't think it should be.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

When has someone done this that you can remember?? For example what foods?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's your opinion that other's opinion should be based on your criteria and not theirs. That seems unpopular to me.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I mean. This is the safe space for thoes "unpopular opinions"

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't care for messy fingers or a messy face. This affects my overall experience and cannot enjoy a food like ribs. A pulled barbecue sandwich that tastes the same and is less messy though… 💯 You can have my share of the messy food. I don't want it.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

But ribs are far more satisfying compared to a pulled pork sandwich.

by Sorry_Ad 1 week ago

Not to me. Messy face and fingers bad enough but I also don't care for the work of eating ribs or the discarded bones on my plate to be honest. More for you.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I will take it.

by Sorry_Ad 1 week ago

Enjoy your meal

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Nah if I have to wipe my hands after every bite I'm not really interested

by Predovicsadie 1 week ago

Why are you wiping your hands after every bite if you're just going to wipe them again? Isn't it common practice to wipe when you're done eating

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I wipe my hands the whole time. I'm not going to have food on my fingers for a second longer than is needed. Disgusting. And I mostly refuse to eat food like that. I'm a grown adult who knows how to use utensils. I'll leave the finger food to toddlers.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I hate messy food! No matter how yummy it is, if it's messy, I don't enjoy eating it. To each their own! :)

by Schuppejamil 1 week ago

But how does it being messy effect its flavor at all. And you know you can clean up afterwards right?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm not ignoring it it just has nothing to do with my question. I just don't see how your experience has anything to do with the food. Because you have a hard time eating something dispite flavor being a 10/10 your gonna leave a review saying 7/10 I had a hard time and my mouth got dirty?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Some people have more preferences about food than flavor. For example, some people also care about the texture, smell, or look of the food. If all you care about is flavor, that's cool. Some people just have other preferences. As for leaving a 7/10 review on my food, I assume you mean like on Yelp or something? I don't leave reviews on food, so no, I wouldn't do that, lol.

by Schuppejamil 1 week ago

Enjoyment of food isn't just about flavor. The whole experience of eating matters to many of us.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Well sloppy joes, I just don't like em, but wings, if they don't have sauce to make them messy then they taste like crap in the first place.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't like eating messy food. It's a pain.

by Cristernest 1 week ago

Messy ≠ sloppy

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Food is an experience, which includes how you feel after you eat it. Sometimes I'm not in the mood to have my hands feel sticky and gross until I can wash them, which is why hot wings aren't as appealing to me as something less messy.

by CowOnly3033 1 week ago

If food is too messy to eat, I end up rushing to finish it. Because I'll get my cup or utensils sticky, I don't have enough napkins, can't put it down and pick it up again without it falling apart, don't want to touch my phone or pass condiments to anyone, etc. OP doesn't understand how it can ruin te experience.

by Powerful_Nose3887 1 week ago

So your basing how good a good is on how easy you can pass utensils to people and why would you be on your phone at a dinner. Table manners? What food is so messy that you can't set it down please give an example and why can't you just wipe your hands off?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Comfort is very important. You don't want to feel stressed and lose a lot of energy just to eat.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Stressed over a litte messy burger and losing energy….. by eating?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

My counterpoint to that would be food is meant to be enjoyed, and messy food is not a good idea when you have other things to do or are at work ECT. Directly limiting the times I get to enjoy the food makes it less enjoyable sometimes if that makes sense

by Qsteuber 1 week ago

Ok but that's my extact point why rate food based on scenarios like your at work or inconvenient place. Eat it like your at a table where you can clean up it's not like your prema messy

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Because accessibility directly contributes to being able to eat it. For example a restaurant serving food that's only open for 15 minutes a day Will still be less desirable simply because of the hoops you have to jump through to get it

by Qsteuber 1 week ago

But that doesn't make the food taste any less good it doesn't affect flavor

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I've been craving a burger from a place where they're especially messy, but oh so good. I don't want to go alone though, because their small fries easily serve two (or more), and it's about 45 minutes away from home.

by Legitimate_Fudge 1 week ago

I dont think this is unpopular at all. Thre are so mant indian dishes that end up on my shirt, but are the best food I've ever had, same with ethiopian food, though eating with your hands using injera makes things so simple. I could list so many foods, but I agree the taste is what matters.

by Roscoewiegand 1 week ago

But Ethiopian isn't messy. The injera keeps everything clean and tidy.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't think I judge food based on how messy it is. Like I don't add how messy it is as a factor if im judging the food on how it looks/tastes. However, if it is messy to eat, like wings for example, I will enjoy it slightly less just because of my hands being sticky/saucy. I just dont like it.

by Local_Weight9040 1 week ago

I dislike food thats hard to eat. If its a lot of effort to eat it, I wont like it.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

So imagine a 10/10 flavor texture everything your gonna say no to it because it's a bit messy?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Agreed it's wack

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Agreed with you until you were a prudish coward. The messiness of a meal is inconsequential to how good it is, just provide a bib or let me eat with my shirt off like the fatty I am. Unless it impacts the taste, aroma, or mouth feel it's irrelevant. I'm lactose intolerant and still love stuff drowning in cheese, not even the promise of an agonizing diaretic night on the toilet matters.

by One_Suit_1823 1 week ago

Nicer it looks more people touched it. Breathed into it, fingered it , licked it , wiped it

by aohara 1 week ago

Depends on what you are rating...

by krajcikjohnatho 1 week ago

I think food should be eaten at a table with napkins utensils ect with a sink to clean up. So if you eat it in a car that's kinda on you.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Nah messiness does affect the food enjoyment, and that's what you rate food on. I ate curry rice last week and had to use hands, and while the taste wasn't bad the mess it left on everyone's hands (the curry was a bit runny) grossed me out

by Ordinary-Degree7648 1 week ago

I judge all my food by how expensive, nutrients dense, easy to cook, and easy to eat it is. 😩

by Johnpaul73 1 week ago

Sp true

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Fair enough but even if the food isn't 1000£ good it can still be good

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This is illogical

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Hey it's my opinion

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I wholeheartedly disagree on price. Like a McDonalds double cheeseburger is a 5/10 for $4.19, but that same burger at $8.38 is a 0

by corkeryjeremy 1 week ago

I think a food can not be good for the price but still be a good food on itself it should be separated categories

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The first mistake was getting a burger at McDonald's. Fast food is always a disappointment at any of the FF companies. That's what happens when you use basically slave labor.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I can understand why you might judge something purely based off taste, but it's kinda disingenuous to only judge food based off taste. Price and messiness are a factor in food, admittedly for some more than others, but still, it's a part of the experience. You can't just completely discount that

by Automatic-Desk-9822 1 week ago

100% but I think this should be a different category like food:10/10 worth for price: 6/10

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I can get rating different categories of the food, but you make it seem like the messiness and price should be thrown out altogether lol

by Automatic-Desk-9822 1 week ago

Imean rating food based off of categories would bring you back at square one being the example you give gives an average of 8/10 (if I did my math right). No one wants to read more than one rating, they gonna average that out.

by alda79 1 week ago

They have these things called "utensils" with names like "fork" and "spoon" and "knife" along with these interesting oddball items called "napkins." You can Google search for them. They're not that uncommon.

by Effertzellen 1 week ago

As much as I like the taste of wings, they're annoying as hell to eat because I have to use a napkin after each one and for that reason I rarely get them. There's just no clean way to eat them.

by mayertangelita 1 week ago

I rate food on taste, if it's messy that's on you and how you consume it

by deonsawayn 1 week ago

Utensils 🥄🍴

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Choose what you like. Eat and enjoy your food. Stay in your own lane. And tell anyone that judges how or what you eat to go f*** themselves. Messy food is ofttimes the best. There are these things called napkins and sinks and washers so wgaf? And why would melted cheese and bacon bits on a burger be bad. Sounds awesome and if you are a messy person, wearing white and it means THAT much to you then use utensils. Why make a problem out of nothing?

by Sorry_Ad 1 week ago

Ok. You are welcome to the idea that scrumptious cheesey burgers are not perfection. 🤣

by Sorry_Ad 1 week ago

Except for a beef patty I agree.

by Leonor35 1 week ago

It's a problem if the messiness of the food isn't accounted for by the restaurant Like seafood places can be incredibly messy but that's why they have those paper table cloths you can eat off of and give you a bib to protect your clothes, the messiness is part of the experience. There's a wing place I go to where they give you an entire roll of paper towels to wipe down with. If a place makes messy food and they only give you one tiny napkin then that's a problem because they haven't catered to the messiness of the food

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Poutine is the best, I don't care what you think.

by obie60 1 week ago

If the restaurant doesn't take responsibility for the dish's messiness, there is an issue. For example, seafood restaurants may be really filthy, but that's why they provide paper tablecloths for you to eat off of and bibs to keep your clothing clean; the messiness is just part of the experience. I frequent an establishment called Wings where they provide you with a whole roll of paper towels to use for wiping. There's an issue if a restaurant serves sloppy cuisine and you just get one little napkin since they haven't taken into account the messiness of the dish.

by fiona98 1 week ago

Good food ends up in my eyebrows and remains good food. I'd rather have a burger bigger than my face, that I can't help wearing some of, than some pathetic little dish that, while tasting amazing, occupies four square inches of the plate in total, and doesn't fill me up. The fine dining experience is for posers. Good food is big and dirty and can't be consumed cleanly. This is a hill I will die on, but not before I've completely beaten those who oppose this position.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The messiness is part of the food and the eating experience. A food review should include the price but not a critique since it is not an inherent part of the eating experience.

by Dazzling_Photo 1 week ago

As much as I like the taste of wings, they're annoying as hell to eat because I have to use a napkin after each one. There's just no clean way to eat them.
