+28 Nurses are not first responders, amirite?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I generally associate the term "first responder" with somebody who goes to the scene of the incident out in the world, rather than somebody who responds to something inside their workplace. A nurse may be the first to respond to a medical emergency inside the hospital, so in that context, they are a "first responder," but in that sense, somebody who is CPR trained might be the "first responder" in the office they work in. While admirable that they took the time to get trained, I don't think the office worker fits what most people think of as a "first responder." Nurses are a critical part of the healthcare system, including the treatment of patients brought in by EMS "first responders," but "first responder" doesn't seem an appropriate title for a nurse.

Who's the first to respond when the incident is brought to the emergency room?

Who's the first to respond when an inmate gets shanked in prison? How are you qualifying the term "first responder?" Is it merely the first person to arrive to an emergency, regardless of location? Or is it a select group of occupation whose job is to travel, generally out in public, to the scene of an emergency? How you define that term will determine who fits into it. But I don't think a school's janitor, even if he happens to be the first to arrive to a grade-schooler with a broken leg, will qualify in most people's minds as a "first responder," at least not as a function of his occupation. To answer your question, generally a nurse or ER tech has been the first to greet me when I brought patients into the ER. But the difference here is that I, an EMT, went to the emergency. The nurse/ER tech had the emergency brought to them.

Nurses get so many discounts most times, some feel entitled. Not all, but some. Or maybe she just wanted her discount lol.

by Traditional-Wave7263 2 weeks ago

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion, even among nurses....

Many nurses don't think they are first responders, you probably just came across the odd one that does for some reason. My best friend is an rn working in the ER (so she sees a lot of actual first responders) and many of the other nurses I know through her have never considered themselves first responders.

Nurses should get the same discount as first responders.

Asking for a first responder discount is a douche move

EMT's that aren't currently using their licensure in employment or volunteer work are also not considered first responders. I have to remind them of that frequently in my industry, as well (LE sales, active employed firefighters and EMT's are covered for some limited discounts to encourage sales.) I get some that complain but that's the policy for a reason. Armed security guards holding licensure also have to do the same, so it isn't singling them out by any means. I've had trauma nurses try to pull this on me, and the answer is still no. Sorry, but no. Thanks for your work, but no, that will be full price margins for you.

Nurses are more deserving of a discount than Cops, Veterans, and Seniors.

by Zion44 2 weeks ago

Why? I'm not disagreeing with you, but this particular establishment was very clear on who qualifies and nurses do not.

For which they are aptly and amply compensated.

If we're going by training, is Neil Degrasse Tyson a first responder? What about a brain surgeon? No one is saying that nurses don't do anything. They do quite a bit and are very helpful to society as a whole. They just aren't the "first" to "respond". Someone else responds first and brings them to the nurses. That's not an insult to nurses. Why would it be? I think what's happening is that, in your brain, you associate "first responder" as a term of respect, and you respect nurses, therefore surely nurses must be first responders. You respect the military as well (I assume, most people do). Are nurses soldiers as well? Clearly not. Deserving respect doesn't mean that you deserve every title given to everyone that you respect. That's the discussion at hand. Nurses, while deserving of respect, are factually not the first ones to respond, and therefore are not first responders. Does that mean they don't deserve a discount for their work? That's a whole different discussion. I would say that they probably do. But if we're discussing a discount specifically for first responders, they factually do not fit the criteria

Lol what? False equivalence A football coach should know more than the players, that doesn't make them equally or better than the player at playing the game. You're championing 1 aspect of first response teams, while tossing out the rest. Nurses are 1 link on those teams, usually at the end. Typically nurses aren't considered first responders.

It's up to the store to decide who qualifies for any given discount. If they say nurses are "first responders," then great, RN's enjoy that discount. If not, the customer should let it go. Either way it's none of your business. That transaction is between the store and customer. You don't get to decide who qualifies for a discount based on your perception of a given profession.

They are though. If you are a nurse, and you happen to be at the same time and place when an emergency happens, and you don't help save lives, you can lose your license. My friend who is a nurse did cpr on a guy at the grocery store at the checkout line.

Are volunteer firefighters first responders?

by irau 2 weeks ago

Yes! IMO they are, just bc they're part time or volunteer they still respond first when they're volunteering.
