+48 The current consoles are the worst, amirite?

by Busy-Grapefruit-4478 2 weeks ago

But that hasn't really anything to do with the current consoles though, thats something that the game studios control, not the consoles.

by Starkjanessa 2 weeks ago

This isn't really true though. There are a number of ways in which console makers drive game developers, not the least of which is straight up paying a particular developer to produce a title for their consoles, including outgoing gens.

by fherzog 2 weeks ago

Sure it can influence it, but not every game made for console is influenced or bought, so again it's really a game studio thing, and not consol, u can see the same time is happening on pc as well, so saying the consoles is bad because of that is wrong.

by Starkjanessa 2 weeks ago

It's still not the console itself. You're talking about companies. These are issues driven by companies. The consoles themselves are great. My PS5 is the best console I've ever owned in every metric. Games run smooth, graphics are beautiful. Never have any issues with it. The consoles are great. It's the companies which create consoles and video game developers that you are referring to

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Not really true. Microsoft and Sony send out guidelines to companies or they say you cannot release X game if there is no port for the old gens. Sure, the studio could say no and only release to PC, but they would lose out on a lot of money and gamers would lose out on a lot of games.

by Legitimate-Data 2 weeks ago

If only there were a way to play games that let you update your hardware at will

by Gbeer 2 weeks ago

Lol not everyone can afford $3,000 for a gaming rig, Carl.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It's still more expensive than the console that is plug and play and the games were optimized for.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

A PC that cost less than 1000$ will be better performing for longer and come out cheaper than a 500$ console and 8 years of ‘game-pass' to play online and buying 70$ games.

by Left-Concern 2 weeks ago

You don't need to lie.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

.... 😑 i just said $800 is my price point and it flat out doesn't handle games as well as a console, but okie dokie artichokie I can't possibly understand what I have dealt with for the past decade of computer buying/gaming 🤪

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Learn how to build a better, more rounded machine. I guarantee that for 800 bucks you can get a nice gaming PC

by Left-Concern 2 weeks ago

How about people don't have the time or want to do that.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Sooooooo now I need to be able to BUILD MY OWN COMPUTER in order to be comparable to a console? .... That's just making the argument that consoles are better that much stronger.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Yes. Kids can do it

by Left-Concern 2 weeks ago

No.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

There's thousands of videos that showcase and tell how to set up PC builds with incredible value that will perform not only better but last longer and be upgradeable unlike your console Then again if you're the type of person who can't get through a step by step video of plugging and screwing stuff you might as well just stay on console, have to pay to use your own wifi that you already pay for and pay higher prices for the same games (minus exclusives) while you still need to buy a PC because most people still need a PC. Idk man, it doesn't seem all that convenient to me tbh I moved on from consoles after the 360 and I'd never go back

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I did it at 11 years old. I'll literally all it takes is watching a YouTube video, it's not difficult.

by Okeefechristop 2 weeks ago

You computer bros are so incredibly weird about people not doing what you want them to, seriously. Calm down.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Possibly is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. I built one. It was the opposite of fun.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Honestly asking since I haven't looked in a decade but can you get a full decent setup for under $1,000. So not just the PC but decent mouse, monitor, and keyboard?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

No you can't. People forget about games being optimized for those specific console architectures vs the vast array of pc specs and software. All in all, there's + and - to each. But the streamline and costs of consoles are supreme.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Most pre built PCs come with a keyboard and mouse, and if you're down bad you can always hook the pc up to a TV. That being said, a good monitor is only like 150 now they're crazy cheap, and you can find a good bundle for mnk for around 100.

by Delicious-Fold-5135 2 weeks ago

So are you playing only free games in this scenario? Last I checked pc games often cost money too

by Qcummings 2 weeks ago

Yes but you can get them usually for 1/4th or 1/3rd price than console equivalent, plus you don't pay to play online. All things summed up and the PC comes out cheaper, better performing and much, much more useful for everyday tasks

by Left-Concern 2 weeks ago

Just because you keep saying it doesn't make it true. You can get discount games for control too man.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

That's an exaggeration, and consoles have huge sales constantly as well

by jarredmoen 2 weeks ago

Still I guarantee PC games will be cheaper

by Left-Concern 2 weeks ago

They still have online discounts for some of the console games. If you buy and resell physical games after playing cost is pretty negligible

by DangerousLibrarian60 2 weeks ago

I mean, sure… we considering resale value? I bought a RTX3090 for 1500€ and sold it for 2250€ after mining about 3000€ of BTC, now what? How about we leave those calculations out? I was discussing purchase price and ownership.

by Left-Concern 2 weeks ago

I just prefer console because I'm comfortable with it, have no idea how to build a PC, and frankly, don't have the room for a PC anyways. I'll agree that PC is better, though.

by Mental_Tank 2 weeks ago

PCs are absolutely better for many game types but consoles are better for a few things that I value more.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

And computer bros will try to think of anything to justify just being downright rude and aggressive about someone prefering a console.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Were getting close to the end of mores law soon you won't have to upgrade anything ever again because it will be physically impossible for better hardware to exist.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Sure we are mate, that's why my 40 series GPU is 100% faster than the last gen and CPUs have been having huge leaps of performance…

by Left-Concern 2 weeks ago

Yes but that will come to and end soon you can't make a transistor smaller then an atom.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Lool yeah mate we're still very far off from that And you can always just etch more or more powerful transistors

by Left-Concern 2 weeks ago

Sure, but then you just raise the size of the system overall. People will boomerang back to having a computer room that is a literal room for one computer.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

That's the most idiotic thing I've read today

by Left-Concern 2 weeks ago

I have never bought a console that needed to be repaired, ever, save for some 15 years down the line (which is to be expected). I have almost every console made. Almost. Not rich, just a lifetime of collecting and receiving gifts from other people and hanging onto them. There are plenty of repair shops that will fix a console, just as they will fix a computer, if that were to become an issue for me.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Ive never had to repair a console either but i know a lot of people who have had to.

by Big_Illustrator 2 weeks ago

The only people I have seen had to repair consoles fall into 3 catagories: Old item that had a single part wear out. It's not a guarantee this one will happen. People who are exceedingly careless with their consoles, yanking cords, letting them drop... or worse, their house is absolutely FILTHY and thus roaches have moved in to the console. I worked at a repair shop and have seen this WAY more than I EVER wanted to know about 🤢 PS5 owners... that HDMI port was soldered on with glass apparently, because even the most careful person is at risk of this problem. This is one of many reasons I have not gotten the PS5 yet.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Ok. 👌

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

At the start of this console generation, you could not beat a console in performance for the price. But we are now halfway through the generations and it is not hard to build a pc for less than the price of a console that outperforms it.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I mean to get something roughly equivalent to a console it would be like 750-800$

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

LTT made a PS5 equivalent PC for $475. But that's after the PS5 has been out for over 3 years.

by SizeThen789 2 weeks ago

.... Yeeeaaa absolutely not. That is my price point on computers, and my consoles ALWAYS handle better than the $800 computer. Always. The computer can't handle half of what the console can.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

.... Ok 😐 I'll just bend the reality I have experienced for you.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Well what are your specs?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

$800 gets part of a graphics card just to run the same game as a console would lol.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Right now you can build a pc with a 5600 and a 6750xt for like $750, which leaves budget for a keyboard and mouse to

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

... sooo now I need to be able to actually BUILD MY OWN COMPUTER in order to be comparable to a console I can pick up? You're just kinda... showcasing why a console is better.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

So spend $1000 and avoid playing on ultra in 4k

by Gbeer 2 weeks ago

Orrrr I can just buy a console that the games are optimised for, for less money.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

All the best games aren't on console though

by Okeefechristop 2 weeks ago

... they aren't always on PC either, without pirating... and you can't really pirate ps4 up very well.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

There are like 4-5 console exclusive games like God of war or the last of us. But there are entire genres that are PC exclusive like strategy, MMO, simulator ect

by Okeefechristop 2 weeks ago

The entire Nintendo lineup is console exclusive.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Yeah, computers are just too complicated for some people and the ones that are designed for the technologically handicapped often have problems with games. Enjoy your console

by Gbeer 2 weeks ago

You are weirdly aggressive over someone prefering consoles. Something I have noticed about computer bros.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I spent 1400$ on mine and I can run games from high to ultra from 60fps to 140fps. Although I had to look at so much info in order to get the parts for optimization right. It depends on the games of course but next gen games I run from high to ultra with more than 60fps. So no, unless you want everything at ultra with 300fps and 50 C° temps then you don't need to spend that much.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Ok... and I spent $300 on my PS4.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Yeah but your original point was that you didn't have an absurd amount of money (3000$) to spend on a rig, and I said that with 1400$ you can achieve high end settings on games.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

..... what world do you live in that you can just drop $1,400 and it not be considered an absurd amount of money?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I bought a 700 dollar tower that works quite well. At most, you're looking at around 1200 for a solid mid range machine.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

More like $700. I guess that'd be a rough conversion to USD for the PC I built in 2016, that was with a Blu-ray drive, which you don't really need. PC costs more upfront, but you do save a bit on game prices and free multiplayer.

by Hickleerika 2 weeks ago

You're articulating the problem with the industry as a whole. Bleeding edge tech specs rarely, if ever, lead to better game play. It's just visual fluff. The core dynamic of a quality game has little to do with pushing more pixels and everything to do with refined controls, in game UI interactions and quality collision detection etc. Nintendo has known this for ages, that it's better to spend more time on refining the game mechanics than it is to just release a pretty game that plays like garbage.

by Dagmarhickle 2 weeks ago

Also, Nintendo knows that realistic graphics don't hold up for very long, whereas stylized and/or cartoonish graphics hold up much longer. All of the following games released in 2012. Borderlands 2, the Walking Dead, Far Cry 3, AC3, Journey, Spec Ops: The Line, Diablo 3, Hotline Miami, CoD Black Ops 2, and Lego LotR. On that list, the games that aren't remotely realistic have easily held up the best- Journey, Lego LotR, Diablo 3, and Hotline Miami. Cell shaded games like Borderlands 2 and The Walking Dead have held up better than realistic graphics. The games with realistic graphics have easily held up the least, and are in need of remasters to be playable today.

by SizeThen789 2 weeks ago

Game Devs ? I mean do you really think Sony and Microsoft don't have have talks with all the bigger studios on when and how to schedule console releases?

by Early_Confidence 2 weeks ago

So if there was no competition, Sony would just stick with the PS1 for 30+ years? Your argument doesn't make much sense

by DangerousLibrarian60 2 weeks ago

Of course they would. PS1 doesn't really count bc that was pre-online, but if there was no improved PCs and the xbox, there would have been no economic reason for a ps5. It splits the customer base and makes development harder

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Nah being bombarded by ads on a platform I actually paid to purchase just makes me feel like it's the best gen /s

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I wanted to upgrade my PS4, but the pandemic, supply issues, and scalpers just turned me off. If there was a pre-pay option and a legitimate online waiting list with one console per household, I would have signed up for it.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

invest in a ps5 totally worth it, backwards compatible with ps4 games, depends on tv and budget though....

by Marquardtgregor 2 weeks ago

There was on the Sony website for this

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

forcing siblings to share a console would be evil...

by Unhappy_Variation_84 2 weeks ago

Not to mention it feels like most devs haven't even cracked the surface of what this gen is capable of. I can only think of a handful of games that look/feel truly next gen. A PS5+ just feels like a waste of resources.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I got my PS5 a couple months ago, though I honestly got it mostly to be a better PS4.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

pretty much the same here. my cyberpunk loading times are so fast and graphics are great still crashes sometimes though ...

by Marquardtgregor 2 weeks ago

Ragnarok is on PS4, though the fan might end up spinning fast enough to take off into your ceiling if you play it on PS4.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

This is the most forgettable console generation. Games have been release now fix later for years and many companies are just doing remakes of games that don't need it. Resident evil 4 for example. They're all riding on nostalgia when the original game is much better. (More charm more atmosphere). Konami is doing the same with silent hill 2 remake and seeing gameplay trailer, man it looks bland. Who cares for higher graphical fidelity if there's no art direction. These remakes just have the same grey scale look to them. I think video games have plateaued, the only stuff worth experiencing is going back in time.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Apparently the PS5's life is half over and there are barely any games that feel like true next gen experiences since everything had to also come out on PS4 (mostly due to supply chain issues).

by Sufficient_Use_5474 2 weeks ago

I love that Sony responded to a previous shortage of PS5s by producing more PS4s

by alvahhane 2 weeks ago

I think we need fewer massive 500 million dollar budget games that are meant to appeal to everyone. Stuff like Grand Theft Auto and Elder Scrolls where they need to sell a billion copies to make a profit. And more smaller niche games made passionately for a single kind of audience. Stuff like Counter Strike, iRacing, Paradox games, and Kerbal Space are why I still game. I haven't played a mainstream story based game since like Red Dead 2.

by Okeefechristop 2 weeks ago

You don't think counter strike gets millions spent on it?

by Major_Examination983 2 weeks ago

It's definitely the biggest of the games I named, but it still is a niche game made specifically for fans of competitive FPS games. It's not a game like GTA where you have children who just started gaming, obsessed 17yo's, and 45yo casual gamers playing it at the same time. And no I don't think Counter Strike's development budget ever came close to a game like GTA, Elder Scrolls, or Fortnite.

by Okeefechristop 2 weeks ago

Counter strike is not a niche game at all and the most popular fps game that exists, i agree with your other sentiments but you're wrong with counter strike. The amount of money that game generates and is spent on is surpasses almost anything, maybe other than GTA

by Major_Examination983 2 weeks ago

I'm still rocking my Xbox one x. This is the first time in my life I haven't bought the latest console. I'll buy the series x once the pre order happens for the next Xbox generation.

by Suspicious-Room 2 weeks ago

I'm still on the 1s

by Schustersamanth 2 weeks ago

Unfortunately that's because the pandemic caused supply chain issues which made upgrading difficult. Were they suppose to trash the last gen when they didn't have enough next gen for the market?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Not to mention the Series S which shouldn't exist and should have been a handheld that appealed to people who just have gamepass and don't purchase games.

by Xgottlieb 2 weeks ago

They need to make more games for the ps3. Worried I might have to upgrade to a ps4 soon.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

check pawn america?

by Marquardtgregor 2 weeks ago

They also still call current console 'next gen' and make 'next gen updates' for these normal current gen brand boxes.

by Barrowsfelipe 2 weeks ago

This is largely because of the push for better graphics at any cost, which make game development cost hundreds of millions of dollars. And take many years. This makes game studios extremely risk adverse because the investors funding the studio demand high returns for their money. Which makes games ever more generic.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

honestly after getting a pc and a steam deck i cannot go back not because of the performance but because of the openness and being able to do anything with the hardware you want play just about any game you want because most stuff is ported to pc nowadays and emulators exist. I've always found it silly you can't do whatever you want with something you own.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Yeah I only got a series X because I got rid of my xbox one ages ago and gave it to my sister. As she wanted to play games. And got myself a Switch instead. Needed a breath of fresh air and Nintendo was that. Completely different games to the ones I'd been burnt out playing. I wanted to play third party games because Nintendo consoles aren't great in that department. Other than that there was no selling point tbh. All exclusives are on PC so it essentially has nothing another platform doesn't and the games honestly look very similar to Xbox One games. Hell Halo 2 anniversary literally looks better than Infinite! Like how?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I think you're confusing remakes and remasters lol

by Life-Blacksmith 2 weeks ago

Try more indie games. I've been playing "Another Crabs Treasure" and it's really good. Cult of the Lamb and Bendy and the ink machine are fun too.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

2023 was a historically good year for videogames, and 2025 is looking like it is going to be up there as well, so I'm not super fussed about 2024 being a slower year

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It went up 10 dollars over 10 years. Inflation over that period was much more, realistically we are lucky it only went up that much

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Someone didn't get a Neo-Geo

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

game is held back by outdated tech. Every PC player: "First time?"

by Urban96 2 weeks ago

2023 was a great year for gaming though

by katherinelehner 2 weeks ago

Paying to save the game is worse. That takes close to nothing space-wise and is a gimmick just to take money from you for nothing basically.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Look at the games that aren't available on old gen consoles, they aren't that different from old gen games

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I get 90-120 fps at 4K all the time. If your tv has hdmi 2.1 and vrr it's very possible. They can optimize the game on consoles and it runs great.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Ahh thats awesome then! Sounds like theres no real reason for console manufacturers to update hardware all too much then for a little while. Especially since these things are heavily comped by the manufacturer.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

This only applies to PS and Xbox. Nintendo switch has only one $70 game which isn't a remake btw. That aside I agree. 9th gen of consoles is abysmal. No point in being excited for PS5 pro when we barely have games that utilize base PS5 hardware potential. Except if you want to look at Joel's ass for the 4th time but this time in 8k 120 fps. Xbox barely has any killer apps. Phil Spencer is great at "Xbox as a brand" ceo but sucks at "Xbox as a console". Instead of spending billions on buying out third parties. They should've invested in their currently owned companies.

by Harbercole 2 weeks ago

Hmm, but isn't Steam big picture plug and play? There is also Steam OS, which I guess makes your PC like a console.

by Zbaumbach 2 weeks ago

A PS5, u plug into the tv and u are done, maybe some updates and logins, but nothing else really. But a pc, u need to figure out which of the many many options u want, and u have to think about what u want to play, then u have to install the software u want, and keep the drivers up to date, which PS5 does itself, and then u can start to game. But some years down the line, you setup might not run so well anymore, as not all games to pc is really that well optimized, but on console, the devs knows the specs, so the game should work well, and there isnt lots of settings u need to fiddle around with. So no a console is just more plug and play, and for a lot of people, thats all they want, they dont want to have to figure all of the stuff out, when it comes to pc. So I can see why its there, but I prefer pc as well, I just get why some dont, and maybe down the line it will change, more and more exclusives comes to pc.

by Starkjanessa 2 weeks ago

I to prefer that, but it's why consoles are there, for those that would rather have a plug and play, and no faf

by Starkjanessa 2 weeks ago

They are more expensive for people than consoles

by Latter-Ad1733 2 weeks ago

Yea it kind of blows my mind every time I remember they exist. It seems like something that should have fallen out of popularity in like the early 2010's. Pretty much none of the games that I play are on console anyways. What do they even play? Just $60 single player story games over and over?

by Okeefechristop 2 weeks ago

You vastly overestimate the technical capabilities of a significant portion of people. A lot would have no idea what you are saying just by using the word boot.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

That's complete rubbish and a massive over speculation. More games are made for pc than any console combined. Like where do you get this from? Also just use cdkeys, they offer games as steam sale prices all year round

by Major_Examination983 2 weeks ago

It's just easier for devs and publishers to develop for known specs. That's why console games run better and make better use of the hardware and, in turn, attract more customers. The deal is sell consoles at a loss and keep us in their ecosystem. For some people it's worth it.

by Busy-Grapefruit-4478 2 weeks ago

Consoles games don't run better at all, who has told you this? That is complete and utter rubbish.

by Major_Examination983 2 weeks ago

It's like apple stuff. The "PC" always has the exact same components so devs don't have to make "general purpose" software that works on all hardware, they can write software specifically for the hardware they know they'll have and get as close to the limits as possible. I agree they are pretty pointless and I'm surprised they're still around. But a console does get slightly better performance out of their components than they "should" because everything is made specifically for those components.

by Okeefechristop 2 weeks ago

I wouldn't say it's dying. Just look at sales numbers. The PS4 was released in 2013 and as of last year has sold around 117 million units. The PS4 isn't completely phased out but for arguments sake let's say the console cycle lasts 10 years. The PS5 released in 2020 and already has 50 million units sold so in just under half the cycle it's ahead of what the PS4 had at the same time in its life. Xbox has a similar story. The Xbox One also released in 2013 and as of last year it sold right under 60 million. The XSX has sold 30 million at this point so it's ahead of the previous cycle by a good 10 million. All that said, consoles sales are on the rise. As far as the games I'd say they're pretty strong this gen too. We've had some real bangers the last two years. PS has God of War, Spider-Man, Horizon, FFXVI, Stellar Blade just dropped (loving it) and several indies. Xbox has less exclusives and the ones they've released so far imo they aren't really as good as PS but I hear Hi-Fi Rush is good and they have a few up coming games I might check out. Then for multiplats you got Jedi Survivor, Baulders Gate 3, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Lies of P, Armored Core 6, Hogwarts Legacy. The fighting game community is eating particularly good with all the big three released now. I'd say it's a pretty good time to own a console.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Actually I was wrong. Just read an article, Xbox sales are down. PlayStation however is still doing good.

Consoles??? Lol Consoles are dead they just don't know it yet. Gaming has turned to the dark side of greed. Mobile pay to win. Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo only make up 30% of the market now. Everyone is moving towards cloud gaming anyways so consoles won't even be needed in the future. Just a gaming controller.

by Inside_Contest 2 weeks ago

Been hearing that for 20 years, still hasn't happened
