Using sign language burns more calories than every spoken language, amirite?
by Sad_Law62212 weeks ago
You could make the argument Italians use hands just as much when speaking
by vincedavis2 weeks ago
Lots more arm movements = burn more calories than finger movement
by oschneider2 weeks ago
Plus they are usually speaking at a high volume which uses a lot of energy. I am Italian/Irish btw

I am Italian/Irish btw I am willing to bet 100 euros that you are an American.

Pack it up boys, we got em

Id bet 10 bucks. Not because i lack confidence but because our economy is burning

You're not Italian if you got the citizenship because your grandpa was italian and moved to the US. I'm Italian because my family is from here and I've lived half my life here. Please keep that in mind

Let's not forget about people who wave or move hands like crazy when talking.

cough Trump cough
by Muted_Journalist_6932 weeks ago
I think you just proved that doesn't burn many calories.

when you comunicate in sign language you dont use your lungs more than you need for breathing. i am no doctor but it is more exhausting to talk a long time in comparison to moving your hands a bit
by Logical-King2 weeks ago
Especially if you do it in every language. That must take forever.
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
I think it's definitely more exhausting to physically gesture everything you're saying (sign language) than using your lungs / diaphragm to speak. Talk for five minutes then waive your hands around pretty consistently for 5 minutes and tell me which one you think was more exhausting
by kayceemayert2 weeks ago
Yeah it get's easier but only because you build the necessary muscles. Which still take more calories to function than the altered air flow and mouth movements.
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
it's not a fitness or what you're used to thing. It burns more energy to move your arms about than it does to move your vocal cords and it doesn't matter how used to doing either of the things you are, it's just laws of physics. The calorie requirement to move your heavy ass arms is higher than it is to move your diaphragm and vocal chords
by kayceemayert2 weeks ago
Like I said, I'm not saying talking is more calorie intensive. But if you tell someone to compare talking for 5 minutes to gesturing for 5 minutes and ask them how tiring each one is, you're not going to get an accurate comparison of signing vs talking.
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
I'd say you'd get a very accurate representation. Just because someone is used to doing the motions and the strain that causes doesn't make it any less calorie intensive, so having a non-signer wave their arms gives a pretty good idea that it requires a decent amount of energy to move your arms in comparison to talking
by kayceemayert2 weeks ago
Bro the amount of calories will be negligible. You're better off skipping that donut

not if I'm screaming
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
The amount of people here that think sign language is just wriggling your fingers around is astounding
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
Nah. Italian. Not only do you wave your hands around a lot, you also have to use multiple muscles to speak.
by Sigridgerhold2 weeks ago
Except maybe Russian and German. Those can sound fairly angry sometimes so that MUST use more calories to inflict such tones
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
inflict 😂

I had a college class with a deaf girl who had two sign language interpreters with her. They had to constantly switch off interpreting so the other could rest. It probably didn't help that it was an evolutionary anthropology class, as I doubt there's a simple sign for Australopithecus or Homo Heidelbergensis.

Not if you scream like Sam Kinison

Oh man imagine having a heated argument in SL just after eating like burgers or pizza...💨
by Cultural_Cup2 weeks ago
What a creative way of saying "Physical movement burns more calories than talking"..
by ComparisonFirm1432 weeks ago
Out of curiosity, do some verbal languages burn more calories than others? Like do certain vocalizations require more energy?
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
Dude German got to be the most effort in talking lol
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
It's also the least spoken language in the world
by Aggravating-Reach4572 weeks ago
Takes a lot more energy to talk using lungs/diaphragm/ 100s of muscles etc than moving your hands around.....
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
I just pulled it out of my ass
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
Is there a double blind peer review study that says sign language uses more calories?
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
Sign language is the fastest language though, since it moves at speed of light, not sound
