+45 The NBA playoffs should be best of one, amirite?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Yup, have never seen any sports fan think best of 1 is a good option in anything other than American football, and even then I don't necessarily think it leads to the best team winning, it's just the ONLY option.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

March Madness would like a word. That being said it works in that scenario because there are 64 teams, so there is still plenty of money to be made. In the case of the major sports leagues having 1-and-done playoffs, just a terrible take by OP (but def unpopular) ;) It's all about money, the longer the series the more money to be made by the leagues.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

The biggest sport in the world begs to differ

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Sometimes they have 2 rounds in the knockout stages (one home, one away game for fairness), but I've never seen a final be a series. They also tend to have a league and a cup (regular season/playoffs) be seperate competitions.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Honestly the most dogbrained thing you can do is watch regular season basketball

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

no i think soccer watchers will always have all the dogbrains

by Percivalblick 2 weeks ago

Not a bad point lol

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

This is some casual take. We would not get Cavs 3-1 comeback if the finals ended in just 1 game. If a team is deserving of a champion, they should be able to beat the opposite team 4 times. In basketball, teams could have a game where they shoot in high FG percentage like Miami heat did in game 2 vs Celtics. So, just 1 game in each round doesn't make any sense

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Best of 7 is not the only format that produces comebacks. We just had one of the greatest World Cup finals last year which was full of back and forths in a best of 1. France almost completed the comeback if not for a crazy save by the Argentina keeper in the last minute

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

There is no way you watch basketball.

by WaltzFirm 2 weeks ago

I do. And I watch soccer, and track. I'm able to compare the merits of all of them. Best of 1 is truly the most hype format. Best of 7 is for nerds

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

and baseball is also a best of 7 series lol

by maggie19 2 weeks ago

That was my point? I'm not sure if you are agreeing with me or not lol

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Hahahah no I am agreeing with you. You'd assume they wouldn't like baseball if they felt this way about basketball

by maggie19 2 weeks ago

Football plays 17 games. The NBA plays 82. A 1 game playoff in the nba would be the equivalent of the Super Bowl being 12 minutes long.

by WaltzFirm 2 weeks ago

Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world but one of the big things hampering its growth is the best of 7 format in the playoffs Where did you see this is hampering the growth of the game?

by kiarramoore 2 weeks ago

The biggest tournaments in the biggest sports are best of 1 (FIFA World Cup, Cricket World Cup, Superbowl, 100m dash). Best of 1 brings weight to the final and brings more eyes to the game globally.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I hate whenever people suggest this because of NCAA. College basketball is terrible and it needs the concept of win or go home to make it interesting. NBA is actually good basketball, i would prefer the better team win rather than one team just getting hot from three for a game.

by ValuableBest 2 weeks ago

Yeah the NCAA playoffs isn't designed to be a fair tournament where the best team typically wins. It's designed to be chaotic and lean into the "March Madness" marketing. That kind of playoff format is terrible for professional leagues.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Then why do the nfl playoffs do it… beta

by Asleep-Cycle 2 weeks ago

Best of 1 doesn't boil down to skill as best of 7. To beat a team 4x you have to truly be better than them. Best of 1 could just be a bunch of YMCA players in the zone against the favorites on an off night.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Your overall point is dead on, but no squad from the YMCA could defeat the Celtics or Nuggets even on their worst of days…

by Few_Bad_6579 2 weeks ago

Sir, the Miami Heat in Game 2 are a bunch of YMCA players.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Go back to the best of 5 in round 1.... Or reduce the NBA season. In season tournament is a good gap to fill

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

the real issue is that the nba season desperately needs to be reduced. why tf are there 82 games?

by No_Yak9004 2 weeks ago

Reducing the schedule kinda impacts records and stats from a historical standpoint though

by Omann 2 weeks ago

I agree. The in-season tournament is a great replacement for games. The NFL is popular in the US because of the shorter schedule

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I think the NFL's popularity is more due to having fewer games than the shorter schedule. When you only have 17 games, each one matters way more than when you have 82. Also having a dedicated day for 90% of the games just makes it easier to keep track of.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

yeah they would gladly make them play more games if they could. It's because they literally own a day of our lives

by maggie19 2 weeks ago

Disagree with BO1 but agree with the sentiment behind it. I think the compromise is a BO3 or BO5 in Round 1, then BO5 in Quarter Finals, and then BO7 for the Conference Finals and Final Final.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Seeding takes care of that. You want home court, be better in the regular season

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Are you aware that about 30 years ago the first rounds where first to 3 wins? they changed it upwards for one reason. $

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Anything to reduce the sheer volume of games would increase the quality of the game: less injuries more highlights more meaningful games Best of 3 or 5 the whole way and a 50 game season.

by Bmoen 2 weeks ago

Best of 2 at most IMO. Champions League format

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I think it should be best of 5. 7 is way too long for a single series it feels like

by Helpful-Object 2 weeks ago

I think I agree that best of 7 is too long, but best of 1 is a bad idea imo. I think 3/5 (probably 5) would work better.

by ImpressionNo 2 weeks ago

Iirc they used to be best of 5...best of 1 seems a bit extreme though...maybe best of 3?

by Hbins 2 weeks ago

We already have the NCAA college basketball tournament for that....truly a unpopular brain dead opinon

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

They'll never do it because it would cost them millions in revenue but I wouldn't mind seeing more 1 and done tournaments like the in season tournament. Like maybe every conference has a 1 and done conference championship that takes place during the season.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I do hate the regular season, it's too long so I either catch up late and watch the end, or start early and get bored mid season and then come back for playoffs. Honestly the playoffs might be the only thing that I should watch.

by astridquitzon 2 weeks ago

This would be a foul baiting flop fest.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

That's called March Madness which is infinitely more entertaining

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

May be one of the worst sports related ideas I have ever read, besides the fact that it would be horrible business for the NBA, it would ruin so many great series comebacks we have seen over the years

by makennabaumbach 2 weeks ago

They added an In-Season Tournament just for you. Lakers were the champions.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Wait til you see the NHL…

by Any_Experience5377 2 weeks ago

Hampering its growth? Revenue, global and domestic viewership have all grown over the last decade.

by Sophiedonnelly 2 weeks ago

best of seventeen

by ApprehensiveRoyal 2 weeks ago

How do you feel about the NHL? They also do best of 7

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Agreed for the most part. Should be Bo3

by Various-Barber 2 weeks ago

I would rather see NFL be best of 7 for the Superbowl.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

7 weeks of Super Bowl games might be overkill

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

No 7 games 1 game every other day. Might only last a week if a team sweeps 4 games.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Look, I love football, I'm all about more football, but the players would die and then we'd have zero football.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Have you seen an NFL game?

by kiarramoore 2 weeks ago

Yep.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

That is physically impossible to achieve. Players already are higher risk of injury on short weeks where they play Sunday and Thursday. Football is too physically demanding to play more than once a week. I could see them doing a best of 3, but that'd require shortening the playoff field, which no pro league will ever do.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

So they play a 17 game season and then a 7 game championship?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

All playoffs should be best of 5 the Bowl best of 7.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

certainly an unpopular opinion but I think they definitely need to move to a best of 5 for round 1 maybe even round 2

by maggie19 2 weeks ago

Especially in the NBA. It's so common for teams to have an outstanding home record while having an average, or even below average, road record.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Basketball may be my least favorite sport, but I can at least agree its growth is doing just fine. I'd leave it the way it is.

by Glad_Light 2 weeks ago

It should be best of 3. That is enough to determine the better team.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

No it's not

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I was going to say best of one, but I was trying to be nice and decided to give you best of three, but you got greedy. You know, in war you don't get seven chances to prove that you are a better army. You only get one. It does not matter what your mood was that day, and how many soldiers were sick that day. So I say, NBA playoffs should be like March Madness. You get once chance or you're out.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Can we all just agree basketball is a stupid sport to watch and the opposite to exiting. Independent of format it would still be trash to watch.
