+33 I think it's fair to call out bad grammar on the Internet. amirite?

by Hmayer 2 weeks ago

It depends. Is the person being polite and gently letting them know they made a grammar mistake? Or are they just using it when they run out of points in an argument

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

or if a sentence is* going on for too long

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Thanks

by Hmayer 2 weeks ago

Thank's*

by mertzisabel 2 weeks ago

Thank is what?

by Roderick38 2 weeks ago

No no, it is Mr. Thank's sentence now

by rickkulas 2 weeks ago

His parents were trying to spell hank but, unfortunately, no one on the internet corrected them.

by Milan79 2 weeks ago

Or* long.*

by Geovanykeebler 2 weeks ago

I'll going to ducking blame autocorrect on that. (*I'm)

by Dense_Ad_1829 2 weeks ago

I guarantee you autocorrect has saved much more than it ruined.

by Apart-Example-7833 2 weeks ago

Sorry, egg*

by Uheathcote 2 weeks ago

Autocorrect is beyond broken and has been for years

by Solid_Fuel 2 weeks ago

Whicj is why I turned it off I get a fair amount of typos but like i like having full control and stuff. And I have a secondary french keyboard that loved to translate random words

by Ok_Guess 2 weeks ago

If someone's true motivation is to be helpful they could DM the person who made the mistake. On the other hand if they feel the need to do it publicly I feel like their motivation is more likely about displaying their knowledge to stroke their own ego.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

There's really not any other reason that people are doing it. Responders don't actually care about you learning from the mistake. It's to make you feel dumb and for them to feel smart

by mayakonopelski 2 weeks ago

*their haha just kidding ;)

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I only mind because sometimes it's not even me. I use talk to text and it screws up you're your their there they're waste waist and so on.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It doesn't pick up on homophones? Oh the humanity. Mine usually picks up the context of the sentence and auto corrects it after

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

That's why you should proofread things.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Most things I type don't matter that much. Am software engineer if that helps any.

by Milan79 2 weeks ago

Is skipped an article there ARRUGHGH everything you say is invalid now!!

by Big-Temperature 2 weeks ago

I work with compiled languages, the ultimate grammar pricks.

by Milan79 2 weeks ago

It's the internet who tf cares, if it's legal papers sure go ahead and correct them, I'll see you in jail.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Yes, because so much communication is done by text, and just because some people are able to figure it out within the context of the discussion, it doesn't mean that all participants will. Plus, including thinks like "rather then" or "would of" or using "woman" as a plural just makes you look stupid, and will ultimately undermine the point you're making.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

"Me and my friend" and "my friend and I" lose no information between the two, but I've seen people point it out all of the time. Some of it really is just people who want to feel smarter than everyone else.

by Double-Order876 2 weeks ago

I agree with that part, but I'm talking about the basic stuff you learn in school at a young age. Than\then, they're, their, there, your\you're etc. It feels like you'd have to put in extra work to avoid knowing this stuff. "Me & my friend\my friend & I" stuff doesn't make people look stupid, and I agree it is generally pointed out by people just wanting to look like a big brain in the moment.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Sometimes it's difficult to move past a glaringly obvious grammatical error or improper use of words because it's so distracting. It can also be difficult to take someone seriously when they don't speak properly.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Never listen to The Uplift Mofo Party Plan by Red Hot Chili Peppers then.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

lol

by Icy-Sorbet 2 weeks ago

There's nothing wrong with "I and my friend," either.

by Wehnerkathryn 2 weeks ago

I'm guessing you're not a John Mayer fan.

by Big-Temperature 2 weeks ago

99% of the time it's done by someone who is adding nothing to the discussion and/or someone who has run out of real points for their argument and is just being petty.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

You could use chat gpt they still talk its just childish im not in a work meeting stfu

by laurie22 2 weeks ago

Because internet forums are not and never have been places that warranted proper grammar. You have to understand something, programmers and are inherently linguists. We absolutely understand grammar. That doesn't mean that we care enough to practice it on a playground. And we are the ones who invented these forums. And believe it or not, we also invented the slang on here too. We were short handing way before "lol" became rampant by the common user. I'm pretty sure you don't use proper English when you're playing video games with your friends or when you're out at the bar having a cold one with the boys.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Real

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Depends on the spirit in which it's offered. It's annoying when you're arguing with someone, it's informal, everyone's typing quickly, and somebody keeps trying to make the discussion about your typos.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Same but I correct people using "isle" instead of "aisle" and most of those people work in a store lol.

by Gottliebapril 2 weeks ago

"Its" and "It's" be annoying me, because of how common it is for people not to know the difference.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Now this is an unpopular opinion

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Yes, but not as an argument. Especially not as 15th argument. You didn't mind mistakes in previous 14 arguments, you mind now cause you're loosing.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Typically it's used as a gotcha point in an argument though.

by nasir27 2 weeks ago

I mean yeah there's nothing wrong about it especially if you just genuinely wanna help but i feel like most of the time it's not about them not knowing which is wrong and right, they just don't notice and don't care given that it's just on the internet and not a graded essay.

by roma79 2 weeks ago

Or when someone uses 2 spaces between sentences.

by Ok-Door 2 weeks ago

if the person is making fun or calling someone else stupid then it's fair game.

by Adraingleichner 2 weeks ago

It's always important to remember when communicating in English online that some people have it as their 2nd 3rd or 4th language, may not be proficient and might be making an extra effort to communicate with you in a language you understand for your benefit. So potentially quite rude to call them out on grammar rules they might not necessarily be aware of, especially when making a concentrated effort. It's fair to call it out, but it's not exactly always a nice thing to do.

by YesterdayNeat 2 weeks ago

If they fail to carry on the conversation and only focus on poor grammar, it signals to me they have nothing productive to add to the conversation and just want to feel superior in the only way possible. And ultimately, if they understand what you said to the point they are able to correct you, they don't really need to correct you at all because they understood what you said.

by WestCelebration 2 weeks ago

As much as I hate poor grammar, it's very distasteful in most cases to point it out. Typos and mistakes happen. The only time I ever point it out is when someone is insulting the intelligence of another person yet misspells words while doing so. That's always satisfying to me lol.

by Careful-Condition-83 2 weeks ago

As a Czech I will happilly call out any "patriots" that slap Czech flag on their profile pic but butcher the language. If you use obviously russian grammar structure... yeah, I'm calling you out.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Some of us have not great phones that autocorrect oddly.

by braunaric 2 weeks ago

You have a double space between "my" and "grammar".

by IndependenceOk 2 weeks ago

Forever correcting $ placement

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Why are people blaming autocorrect? Proofreading used to be a thing.

by jose33 2 weeks ago

The world speaks multiple languages and English is a second, third, forth, etc. language for people if anything at all. Policing other individual's grammar feels like a waste of time.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I was taught it's rude to correct someone.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I don't because I don't believe a lot of people like having their grammar corrected. It doesn't really make any difference to me, if they want to get better at grammar then they will. Also, correcting people in general is something I'm trying to be more conscious of not doing.

by Vada38 2 weeks ago

I usually find it superfluous, so I guess I disagree, but I will say, if you will correct people's writing, do not mistake lectal differences for "incorrectness". Your vs you're? Sure. But using me for I is not "wrong", that's just lectal difference. Sure, it may not comply with standardised formal speech, but it's correct nonetheless.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It's fair, but grammar people don't control the world, math people do.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Not everybody is at C2 so...

by Pleasant-Lock9501 2 weeks ago

Its a little bit childish...

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

*my grammar only 1 space is needed, please pay attention to your letter usage to not waste everyone's Internet bandwidth

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I think it's dumb to do it. It happens so often, and no one even cares. You get what's being written, so there's no harm to the mistake. It's the internet, not a school assignment

by mayakonopelski 2 weeks ago

"I think it's fair to call out poor grammar on the Internet." FTFY.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

No, your absolutely wrong their.

by Devyn22 2 weeks ago

by Gottliebapril 2 weeks ago

Confusing "lose" for "loose" drives me nuts. I correct it every time.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Or when people confuse "isle" and "aisle"
