I like to watch live metal shows, maybe not "watch" but I listen to them. 99% of the time it's a better version of the song. But really watching it, nah I would rather be in the pit than watch the pit.

As a dead head, yeah, the live version is generally a better version of the song.

They were so cool letting people bring recorders and plug straight into the sound board to record. Such a great live band.

Depends what music. You can never say this about kpop performances

It's definitely different than actually being at a concert. Sometimes I find a live recording I like better than the studio recording though. Pearl Jam's MTV unplugged is one. Matt Barlow's last concert with Iced Earth or Tarja's last concert with Nightwish. Foo Fighters at Wembley was badass. Corey Taylor's live acoustic version of Snuff. Jewel's live performance of Foolish Games from 97 I think? Just to name a few that I enjoy listening to.

There's a reason they have to dress up live shows with lasers, fireworks, smoke, lots of lights, video walls, pyrotechnics, etc. Or is it sports I'm thinking of?

Most live concerts are not fun either when you really think about it long enough.

I'd say you really have to love the band. The feel of the music, the dancing, the energy of the crowd, the improvisation. If I go to a show and they play the song just like the album, what's the point? But to watch and feel the music flow through you; to get on down with your bad self, is a very good feeling.
