+30 People overuse the phrase "comedic timing" when they just mean "comedic skill", amirite?

Isn't comedic skill the delivery of the material and connection with the audience, and timing is the rhythm and pace

by Anonymous 1 week ago

My phrase "comedic skill" was meant to be rather generic—maybe I should have said comedic ability—but I'm fine with those definitions, my point is just that I hear the phrase "comedic timing" way too often like it's the only phrase people know and they are trying to sound smart so they use it. In reality there are many facets of comedic ability that we could talk about. People fall back on the timing idea too often.

It also takes Ryan Gosling saying lines that are funny, using funny expressions, and a lot more. Yes and for all of that to come together in a funny way requires good timing.

I don't disagree that it's an important element, but I think the phrase is overused. It's like saying "this baseball player has perfect timing." Well yes, otherwise he wouldn't hit the ball at the right time. There are so many other elements, like how hard he hits it, where it goes, how quickly he runs, reflexes, etc. We would never praise a baseball player mainly for timing, even if it is the crucial element.

It's not overused because without good comedic timing all those other items will not be funny. As far as what he says that is the skill of the writers and has nothing to do with Ryan so you can't praise Ryan for the lines or the jokes but you can praise him on the delivery of those lines.

As someone who has directed comedy...it isn't the lines...it is how you say them.

Timing does a lot of work If I had to direct my actors most of or was timing. The difference between line: line. And line......pause...Line is massive

You're really arguing semantics. Saying someone has good comedic timing is saying they have comedic skill, in this context, are the same thing.

My point is not that it isn't a thing It really is, you just don't want it to be. If you say something, and I say something witty and funny immediately back, there's your timing. It certainly won't be funny if I drop the comeback 20 minutes later.

I think you just don't know what "comedic timing" is

Timing is the most tricky aspect of delivery, and the reviewer probably means it's Ryan's biggest strength. And the movie is the vehicle for Reynold's showcasing of this.

Timing is something you only say when speaking of a dialogue between two different characters. You wouldn't attribute it to just one actor. I think that's the confusion

I am willing to bet that OP is not a very funny / comedic person IRL.

It's almost as if timing is part of comedic skill or something

A lot of people are bad at using the words for their actual meanings, you can look at our reading comprehension statistics to see that

Wouldn't timing be a type of skill?

by kirlinleslie 1 week ago

Yes, I think it's definitely one of the skills needed for good comedic ability. My point is that people focus on timing too much, and use the phrase too much. I hear the phrase all the time, even when it doesn't make sense.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I agree! Timing is important but it's not the only element. People overuse the term.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

No...that;s not what that is. Skill and timing are two different things.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Sure they are, timing is an element that requires skill. In other words, "comedic timing" gets more than its fair share of use when people should be able to recognize other specific elements of comedic ability.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

No, you just don't understand what comedic timing is.

Please elaborate, otherwise you seem to be proving my point.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

No, I don't think I will. It's not my job to educate you.

by Mateo13 1 week ago

It's all good man I know it's not your day job, I'm just thinking if I'm so wrong it should be relatively easy for you to explain why.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's just as easy for you to use Google and educate yourself. You're not a toddler anymore, you're expected to do things for yourself now.

This is a stupid thing to worry about.
