+36 People who tip after receiving mediocre services are the enablers of low standards and poor quality in customer service. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

People who underpay their employees so they're exhausted, overworked, and providing low quality services are relying on the consciences of customers to pay their workers. If I get lousy service, I tip the minimum. And then I don't return.

Tipping culture in america is something i'll never understand

by Downtown-Cash-5097 1 week ago

It's simple, big corporations like chain restaurants own the government, they want to be able to pay below minimum wage, so they are allowed to, so servers are super under paid.

by shaina68 1 week ago

Ok but why does the customer feel the obligation to tip?

by Downtown-Cash-5097 1 week ago

Because we have empathy for people in the service industry.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Which then just encourages corporations to underpay staff

by hkuvalis 1 week ago

Because you're paying the server's salary regardless of if it was part of the price or part of the tip. If you don't tip they are only getting like $3/hr. Don't get me wrong, base wages (and therefore prices) should be higher so we don't have to.

by ImportantYear8003 1 week ago

Same. I don't think I've tipped the maximum yet though

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Well I think the running highscore is half a winning PowerBall ticket.

by Arturo98 1 week ago

The. Minimum being 0 right? Right?

by mnikolaus 1 week ago

Do you talk to the manager and tell them about your experience?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Why even tip in the first place??? As someone from the EU I will never understand tipping culture

by Anonymous 1 week ago

its simple "i dont have to pay my workers if i guilt my customers into to doing it"

by Misael17 1 week ago

because if they dont tip, its not the restaurant that suffers but the individual. Most people don't like it but theres no way to go against it without effectively costing people their livelihoods

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I know we would all enjoy seeing bourgeois restaurant owners pay for their crimes in a glorious revolution, comrade. However, my server needs to make rent this week, not three years from now.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You going out to eat and not tipping only punishes the wait staff, it has no effect on the owner.

by scarlettdach 1 week ago

Actually, isn't that exactly how it works? Pretty sure that, at least in some places, if a server's tips don't reach minimum wage, the employer has to make up the difference. Genuine question.

by NeedleworkerHefty225 1 week ago

Yep... it's an IRS regulation.

by FullPerception 1 week ago

That's the point.

by FullPerception 1 week ago

This isn't how it works in practice.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm from EU and I tip almost everywhere 🤔

by Romaine05 1 week ago

Because in the US tips are part of their wage.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You tip for lousy service. Strange. Do you talk to the manager about the lousy service?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Of course, it's part of their wage.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Believe it or not, some of us have better uses of our time than whining to management if something is amiss. Servers are only human and deserve to earn a living, regardless if they're good at their job or not

by bridgette96 1 week ago

The minimum is zero.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The minimum is nothing.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This is a popular opinion what are you talking about

by Cool_Accountant 1 week ago

I feel like its only a unpopular opinion in the US

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Maybe they'd have less qualms about not tipping for bad service if they weren't worried the server might starve to death. I exaggerate, of course, but I'm glad we don't have US tipping culture in my country.

by Impossible_Cut 1 week ago

It's not that we're worried they'll starve. Most people aren't even considering that. It's more like you don't want to be rude, which I hate because it isn't rude to leave a bad tip for bad service in my opinion

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yes plenty of people do but I feel the majority of us don't care unless you personally know a server

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This may come out as sociopathic or something, but I love it when the "bare-minimum at best" employee asks me for a tip. "No". And then their face goes all "Aw, man, you suck" but I'm ok, since I know their service sucked. I know I'm justified.

by Fparisian 1 week ago

You need to see a therapist

by bridgette96 1 week ago

This would be true if a tip really was a tip, but as so often its a social requirement and also a major part of people's wages, what this actually becomes in reality is just a punishment that means they have no way to change or improve.

$70 breakfast for two? My European mind can't comprehend 😱

by No-Air-2586 1 week ago

Never been to usa before, but I believe it's crazy expensive as you said, yeah. How can North American people spend those prices at a restaurant? I get it if it's a fancy luxury meal, but for breakfast?

by No-Air-2586 1 week ago

It's a tourist trap. I mean there is a place in Bruges on the square that sells breakfast consisting of a ham and cheese omelette with a coffee for €27.. And that ridiculous place on St. Marks in Venice is €25 just for a coffee. Billed as a "cover charge". Think of it as Range Rover selling a convertible Evoque.. the design team just needs to say to the board "some twat will buy it".. and remarkably... People do. If you think that's expensive for the US... Have a look at turning up at Disneyland Orlando with a family of 5 for the day. You won't leave without spending at least $600 minimum without express passes.

by Addison29 1 week ago

First off, we don't eat out often. Eating out at all has pretty much become a luxury. Even fast food and greasy spoons seem to have pricing which have become a luxury to my household budget. Secondly, breakfast is one of my favorite meals to get out and quite a bit cheaper. I would prefer to spend $70 on breakfast than $150 on dinner (which is average cost for two people plus drinks at any restaurant that is not a chain or a pub). We used to eat out often, but the prices have pushed us to eating almost entirely at home.

by Signal-Association15 1 week ago

I will tip more for a friendly attitude and an attempt at good service - even if everything didn't go well - over a server with technically excellent service but a cold demeanor.

by sanfordmadisyn 1 week ago

People who make a point of pointing out bad service are ridiculed as Karen's and Ken's.

by TranslatorEvery 1 week ago

I think this is a pretty US problem. Here in the EU it's perfectly normal not to tip if the service wasn't good. Hell, it's even okay not to tip if the service was good. Cuz, uk, it's their Job to provide good servicr.

by Acrobatic-Motor1974 1 week ago

Right, in the US tips are part of a servers wage as they're paid below minimum wage.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Tipping culture is bad in of itself

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Have you considered blaming the underpaying employers and/or legislators who don't change minimum wage laws instead? We don't have to have tips at all, and it would make this and many other problems go away.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I only tip for really really good service. Overall I'm against tipping culture but if I see the extra mile I tip.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Customary and compulsory are two very different things.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yeah it's the difference between being a decent person and being a asshat.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Trust me, im with you. But this stupid system is never going to change if people just keep doing it. Like.. I'm gonna keep doing it, but I can still understand that by doing that I am helping keep it alive.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

No need for aggression and swearing. My opinion means everything because if I don't wanna tip I don't tip. You shouldn't direct your displeasure at customers, you should direct it at your employers. I've lived half of my life in Europe, and I have friends who spent their whole lives in the service sector and lived pretty comfortably because they were paid enough without having to rely on people's kindness.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yes that's fine in Europe where servers are paid a living wage. In the US servers make less than minimum wage, so tips are part of that wage. To deny them a simple 15% is taking their wages.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You know that tips are entirely optional, right?

by FullPerception 1 week ago

Yes of course, as is not peeing on the seat and refilling the coffee pot when you empty it. Lots of things are optional. But tips are part of a servers wage in the US so when you don't tip you're taking their wages away. It's a simple question of being a decent person. Of course, as you pointed out, that's optional.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

@OP doesn't understand the HUGE difference between mediocre (standard, normal) and bad.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't ever tip, regardless of the service's qaulity. I don't see why some jobs deserves tips when others don't. Ppl say it's due to a low salary or hard labor, but I don't buy it cuz you see ppl doing hard work and get paid min and still don't get the tips. It's just the owners/managers way of paying less to their employees by making them count on the tips to increase their salary.

by Jeanette12 1 week ago

People who tip regardless

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't tip unless it's an above and beyond service, pay your employees a proper wage.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yeah stiffing the worker will definitely show the boss

by No-Importance 1 week ago

Tipping is not the norm in the UK most places don't require the customer to pay for their meal and then a separate charge for their employees wages.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Great. But if your statement was only about us vs uk tipping culture and how tipping is only a reward why would their base pay matter? How does not tipping affect that?

by No-Importance 1 week ago

people who tip in general are victims of self-guilt by peer pressure

by Salt_Writing_6607 1 week ago

And people who don't, where it's customary, are cockbites.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

yes, but remove the "after receiving mediocre services"

by spencerjessie 1 week ago

Nope, that's people management skills. They have the more consistent story. There are numbers of times I don't lower a tip because it seems like the person is just having a bad day. I don't have enough Main Character Energy to assume me receiving bad service once means the service is always bad. A manager would know that though.

by Opening_Barber1 1 week ago

That opinion sucks man. I wish the worst for you
