+49 The heart is the most important muscle, yet we have zero control of it, amirite?

I like to think it's cause our brains don't trust us to use it correctly plus imagine having to manually pump your own heart to keep yourself alive

For our ancient progenitors, there was a survival benefit to being able to control the breath, e.g., when seeing that you would soon be under water, but not for "holding one's heartbeat". If there were, I expect it would be similar in that the autonomic nervous system would eventually override you.

True, just like how you can't really keep yourself from not breathing until you die, even if you did it long enough to pass out your body would begin to breath again once you lost the conscious ability to hold your breath.

thank god bro that would be too much responsibility. i'm glad we keep that thang on automatic.

We can speed up and slow down our heart at will.

Just very slightly. I can't sit here and ramp it up to 240 bpm, nor can I watch a horror movie and keep it at 55 bpm.

Good, people are idiots

You are now beating manually

by Carley64 1 week ago

Well with the right training you can control it.

there is no reason to control it. so it‘s fully automatic. think of it as it being airgapped.
