So I assume you will have your parents living with you in your own house and if they get dementia, you will have the ability to take care of them? What you say is definitely true. There is a lot of downside to some of the homes but alternatives are few. One of my parents passed away my other is in elderly housing. She's like 94 years old of her friends and relatives has passed away. The only friends she has are the ones she's made at the place she's at, but of course they are not really the friends she wants. It is sad and I wish I could have her at my house, but that's not an option.

Every person living in a nursing home is there under their own free will. And in some cases, it is their best option for 24 hour support and supervision in the case of medical conditions that would warrant it.

Nope. One of my grandfathers escape and was dragged back.

Nursing homes and retirement communities are not necessarily the same thing.

Not really, many don't have the cognitive capacity to understand what's happening.

And restaurants and other service probably shouldn't exist, because it makes us feel like our family didn't want to do stuff for us?

I've done it. It's not as easy as you're making it out to be. People go to nursing homes because they have serious medical needs, need supervision (dementia etc), and/or can't walk. So you not only have to do work usually reserved for doctors and nurses, but have to be available 24 hours a day. So if you work for 8 hours and sleep for 8, it really starts to fill up your 40 hour day.

Elderly homes are actually pretty good. My grandmother has been in one for the past 10 years. She has a great community of other senior citizens to lean on, everything inside the home is accessible, and she has plenty of opportunities to get moving. The only downside is that it's not assisted living.

If not a nursing home then where?

What is your solution? What should people do if they don't have someone who they can live with or care for them? Just die?

Rarely does an old person who has a good relationship with their children end up in care. If they are there, it is usually for a reason.

I think you are very out of touch with the reality.
