If someone told me to read something instead of watching I would assume it's because watching it isn't worth the time, the lore isn't explained well enough, or if the show sucks compared to the book (assuming the book is the source material).

I agree with certain cases. As a fan Avatar the Last airbender, the movie was absolutely atrocious and I would always recommend watching the animated series first. The live action series was decent enough that I wouldn't be mad if they only watched that one. Same with One Piece. The live action was actually really good (for a live action) and I think it would pique the viewers attention enough to want to read the manga on their own. Harry Potter, although the movies were good, I would still tell someone that they need to read the books, since it lose a lot in translation.
