+54 If you melted down all the pennies in America, would there be enough copper to build a copper Statue of Liberty? amirite?

Lincoln cents minted since 1982 are mostly zinc. They are just copper plated. That said, there were over 2 billion cents minted last year. At 2.5 grams each with an estimated 2.5% copper, that's about 125,000 kg of copper (268,000 pounds). The statue of Liberty contains about 62,000 pounds of copper.

Wow! I wonder how many Statues of Liberty we could make out of zinc then.

If 2.5% of the weight of the pennies could make effectively 4 full Statues of Liberty, the other 97.5% should be able to make 156, assuming the same weight of zinc as copper could make a statue.
