Sometimes you want a volcanic explosion to help clean. That reaction - not the saltwater product afterwards - works some magic. It's especially helpful for cleaning garbage disposals. You don't want to be reaching down in there, but dumping in baking soda and rinsing with vinegar will froth and lift up anything stuck in the disposal (especially stubborn things like vegetable peels).

This is a really good point. The old granny figure in my life helped me unclog a drain this way and it worked like magic.

There are specialised products for that, the salt foam isn't really going to have a whole lot of fire-power behind it to dislodge anything stuck
