-518 Greenland is NOT a country. Amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

People: Quote from Wikipedia: Greenland [...] is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, [...]. Autonomous country would be like some sort of geographical division (like a state, a county, province, etc.), it's part of Denmark. "Autonomous country" is a special status it gets from Denmark, meaning it's more than just a simple state, province, etc. for Denmark. Therefore meaning Greenland is NOT a country, it's part of Denmark.

Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark .... In 1979, Denmark granted --HOME RULE-- to Greenland, with a relationship known in Danish as Rigsfællesskabet (Commonwealth of the Realm), and in 2008 Greenland voted to transfer more competencies to the local government. This became effective the following year, with the Danish royal government remaining in charge only of foreign affairs, security and financial policy, and providing a subsidy of DKK 3.4 billion ($633m), or approximately US$11,300 per Greenlander, annually. HOME RULE: the power of a constituent part (administrative division) of a state to exercise such of the state's powers of governance within its own administrative area that have been devolved to it by the central government .... Greenland is a self-governing Danish province. Denmark's monarch is Greenland's head of state. Greenland is not part of the European Union, even though Denmark is.

I think I'm going to go with Greenland being a country, but with assistance from the parent country.

Greenland is officially not a country, that's why it's not part of the European Union. And it's too poor to join the European Union.

Well geez! I don't know what to think, I'm going to ask my brother.

Wow, it's sad that so many people disagree with this post when it's actually true...

As far as i know geographically it's a country, politically it's just a part of Denmark... but i'm not sure.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Agreed. As of now, 35 people know geography and 265 people don't... I thought Amirite had people who knew more geography...

Well I guess Canada must not be a country either because after all it is still technically ruled by the queen of England....

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, that's COMPLETELY different. Greenland is like a US State, but of Denmark.

... ... ... Greenland is part of Denmark. >_>

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, it IS in fact a country, since it has gained independence from Denmark 21st June 2009. :-)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(iulia.): Where did you get the fact Greenland gained independence from Denmark?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The UN doesn't recognize Greenland as a country. Do people really think they know more about foreign affairs than the UN?
