rather than grades being ABCD they were ESNF A for being intentionally obtuse

E for obtuse.

"A for Effort" doesn't mean "A stands for Effort". It's not about what the letter stands for. It means "I am judging your effort to be a passing grade instead of evaluating your results, because I would have otherwise judged you poorly". You've fundamentally misunderstood the phrase.
by Kunzekarina10 months ago
Oh no I totally get that the A stands for the effort.. not the word effort. I just still think E for effort is better :D
by Safe_Marsupial10 months ago
But that defeats the meaning of the expression, how is that better?
by Kunzekarina10 months ago
Literally says "effort starts with e not a" in the OP. It's part of the reasoning given.
by Kunzekarina10 months ago
"A for effort" means "I give you the note "A" for the effort you gave". That's a way to say "Maybe you had a F, but I know you put effort in it"

Nobody is going to change a common saying because your school was weird

This is literally just caused by the grading system you're used to being different than everyone you're talking to. "E for effort" means literally nothing to me. Like based on the context you gave me I understand, but if someone said that to me on the street it would make as much sense as like "Q for quality". Like, okay….. what the hell does that mean? The fact that it starts with E is not the important thing here. You're not saying that it starts with E, you're saying that they deserve the best grade for the effort they put in. To you that's E. To me that's A. I guess what I'm saying is that neither saying is wrong, but saying E is right because Effort starts with E is wrong. The saying has nothing to do with the start of the word at all. That's not even a factor.

It's A for effort. They are grading your effort not teaching you to spell. Mom was a grade school teacher for like 50 years.

Nope

E for effort team REPORTING FOR DUTY!! WHAT, WHAAAT?!
by Timmy2110 months ago
I will die on this hill You will likely die alone then. But I give you the grade of an A for the effort you have put into this
by Anonymous10 months ago
OP went to hogwarts
by Working_Gas_252310 months ago
I usually use A for effort sarcastically. As in, you couldn't even manage to spell effort right, but at least you tried. 😂
by Ashlynngreenhol10 months ago
I always took it as "Well, you got an F in math, but an A for effort!" Like how in elementary school we'd get graded on other things as well than just academic...
by Anonymous10 months ago
It means your grade is F but the effort you put in is worth an A
by Anonymous10 months ago
If it was graded on effort, you'd get an A for it. But it isn't so it's not. If you try hard but fail, you might get a metaphorical A for effort.
by Anonymous10 months ago
I'll take the grade that actually means something, OP is living on a made up scale
by Anonymous10 months ago
E for effort, you tried but failed, but hay, at least you tried, so not an F but an E. A for effort just doesn't make sense, if you're getting an A it's for more then just effort.
by Anonymous10 months ago
This is the way I understood it. We always said "‘E' for Effort" even though we were on an ABCDF grading system.
by Anonymous10 months ago
This is also obtuse. The A grade is for the effort put in. You can put in the effort and not get the result, then to acknowledge the effort you put in people will give you an 'A for effort (but not for the result)'.

Obtuse or not, it's how I was raised. My mom taught me the phrase.
