+33 Streaming services are annoying, DVDs are far superior, amirite?

by AdTrue 1 month ago

That isn't a universal experience, but if my internet was that poor I would probably also switch to physical media.

My gf who I live with pays for Netflix, Prime, and Disney Plus, and I still pirate almost everything I watch because it is more convenient than sifting through multiple platforms. I mean, is it still piracy if I have legal access but choose to watch it illegally because the legal option is less convenient?

My internet used to be that poor which sent me down the DVD road, but I still get DVDs because of the ownership aspect.

by thaliakub 1 month ago

I think dvd's are a waste of time and space, you watch most movies once, with a couple exceptions, and then they collect dust.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I can watch my favorite classic movies and TV shows for decades. It's getting to be about time for my yearly viewing of Die Hard. Great Christmas movie!

Try dozens of exceptions. Those are the ones you buy the dvd for. Also physical media will always have better audiovisual quality.

by Worth-Description706 1 month ago

That's not my experience. I binge watch. I like movies marathons going on the background.

This is my plan. I've got a gigantic shelf of blu ray and 4k I've been collecting, and plan to keep collecting, but I know that disc rot is real. Need to get a computer in some form for this first though.

yeah this is an internet problem and not a streaming problem lol

by feeneymodesto 1 month ago

Upgrade your Internet before complaining. The problem comes from you not the platforms.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Definitely rebuilding my physical media collection.

I still purchase (and own) a decent amount of DVD's. After a while, I'll donate what I no longer watch and buy more. I have a handful of DVD's I refuse to ever part with. I have great internet but will still do the DVD thing every now and again!

I actually do agree with a lot of your opinion. I've been saving up all the DVDs I want to eventually quit all streaming services. I'm just not there yet. Also mine doesn't buffer like that. I just don't like the monthly fees.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Actually, Blu-Ray is better since it goes past 720p.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yeah, I bet streaming doesn't seem so great when you're on dialup.

by jakubowskijanis 1 month ago

I never have problems with my Internet on my phone, computer or gaming systems.

by AdTrue 1 month ago

Apart from very very rare internet service disruptions I never have any sort of buffering issues with any of the many streaming apps I use near constantly. It is your internet connection or the device you use to stream on your television.

by Away-Bumblebee-2798 1 month ago

Btw I'm also a fan of physical media for the reasons you describe. I just ALSO love my streaming apps.

by Away-Bumblebee-2798 1 month ago

I've been picking up some great TV series sets at my local goodwill, got 7 full seasons of Seinfeld for 20 bucks and 4 seasons of Curb your enthusiasm for $6 each. Love it.

by Hour_Artichoke 1 month ago

I don't have the buffering problem as my city installed fiber. I did put all my dvds and blu rays on a media server with Jellyfin and it's great.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I mean I still collect dvd/blu-ray sets for the things I really like, but it sounds like you dont like streaming cause your internet sucks bro lol

by Responsible_Art_6718 1 month ago

100% agree with you i told my fiance is want a DVD library and I will not budge on it.

by Visual_Emu 1 month ago

We usually default to streaming services for our regular shows, but for full length features I'm totally with you. I recently invested in a nice cd player, which also has other features, like radio and Bluetooth. But my cd collection has grown tenfold, and I LOVE not having to listen to ads or hop through playlists.

uhhh I think you need to get your internet sorted out, it definitely doesn't take more than a few seconds on something normal for a streaming service to start playing. Also blu-ray has at least a minute long spin up time even on a PS5, Streaming is way faster, doesn't take up space and you don't have to worry about who's going to have to landfill your garbage collection when you're gone because they don't care about it.

So is it your TV's fault when your power goes out?

by baumbachgeovany 1 month ago

Wait til you hear about piracy and torrenting.

by Remarkable_House_694 1 month ago

This but blurays

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I've been snagging dvds at the library when my kids get their weekly books. Looks so much better too

by Majestic_Guide 1 month ago

Streaming services are also annoying due to purposely splitting series and you have to be like Scooby Doo trying to find what platform the next Child Play, Halloween and other series are on, it's easier to own series than stream

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yeah, if I had terrible Internet I'd probably not be a big fan of streaming. At the very least I'd stick with Netflix which seems to handle low or inconsistent bandwidth better than the others.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Most streaming apps let you pre-download your movies. It's a good way to be sure you're going to have a stable viewing experience.

by Popular_Ninja_242 1 month ago

I never have troubles like that even now that I moved to rural Wisconsin

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yeah, I'll never be going back to dvds.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

DVDs are far superior to 4k UHD discs. Surely this is what you were referencing…

by Anonymous 1 month ago

They don't want anyone to own anything anymore. Network goes down and then what Same with the digit version of video games and music Bring back cd/dvd!!

by Spirited-Airport 1 month ago

Get faster internet. I never got the appeal of owning dvd's, most movies you watch once and then they collect dust.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Not everyone can get fast internet. There places in the States that's still stuck with DSL. Some places don't even have internet. When I was homeless I didn't have mobile data and wifi at the shelter house was so bad YouTube would buffer at 240p. You know who didn't care about Internet? This homeless lady with a cheap portable DVD player. Me and a bunch of homeless dudes would watch movies on her player after supper. So yeah don't tell people to get faster internet when they really cannot. That's like telling someone without any limbs to run.
