this would've been an unpopular opinion about 15-20 years ago it's super normal to be a nerd now. a lot of regular people know more superheroes than football players. even the sports guys obsess over stats

Everyone is a nerd now, or so they say. I don't mean it in some gate keepy sort of way, but colloquially the definition is so loose now it's statements about the group as a whole is basically meaningless.

Nerd culture is pretty popular now as so many classically nerd things have gone mainstream. I think the MCU and comics are good examples as it spans all ages and cultures. People love playing board games and I feel like on a regular basis I hear about another celebrity who plays D&D. The personality traits like the need to say "actually" to correct people could be nerd traits but I think those people just lack awareness as how they come off. Overall it's definitely a good thing because you can join a friend group much more easily since people share the same hobbies.

Isn't it more about a lack of social skills combined with making an interest your entire identity that leads to being labelled as a nerd? I excelled in school and later as a researcher - never identified as a nerd and never been called one. Yes, embrace your urge to learn and do what makes you happy. But the label isn't necessary.
