All the examples you gave are why we make fun of you.

Knowing some geography is common, if you can't point out Australia, Russia, China, Canada, and the US out on a map then you're weirdly bad at geography and need to improve.

I live in Spain and Spaniards are pretty bad at geography...

It mostly boils down to people either being ill-informed (i.e. India is not part of Asia, Brazil's national language is "Brazillian", etc.) or just not knowing enough, like your mother not knowing the difference between South and North Korea are. I've lived in two different Asian countries and Australia and I can say for sure that I've never met anyone past the age of primary school who isn't at least somewhat competent with world geography. I guess it's just people like Americans whose education system failed them (one of my friends who's American used to think Africa is in South America)

Believe me, I've met a few people in uni who did. I asked them what continent is Asia part of then, and they said "the middle east"

I think this is fairly popular as an opinion. You are right, most people aren't very knowledgeable in geography. Worst I've seen is from English-speaking countries. I would argue that it should be a school requirement to learn the name of all the countries in the world and to be able to at least vaguely know its whereabouts. This peeghaps would be less popular as an opinion.
