Don't know where you're from but fifth grade in the US is primarily the last grade in elementary school

Wasn't in Virginia when I was in school. Middle school was 7/8

In my country there are typically grades 1 to 9 in one school. Why would that be a problem? It's not like they share a classroom or interact in any meaningful way...

Yeah, that is odd. I've never heard of 5th grade being in middle school before. My middle school was just 7-8th grade but it was part of a K-12.

I don't know how they do it over in the United States, but where I live my schools go: Elementary: Kindergarten - Grade 6. Middle School: Grade 7 - Grade 9. Then finally High School: Grade 10 - Grade 12

Depends on where you are in the world. This is not the same for everyone. In my country, middle school starts at 7th grade.

Yes, I taught 5th graders a while back and it was the first year they put them in the middle school. So many little 5th graders walking around with the 8th graders, some who had mustaches lol I have no idea why they did that.

Your complaint is weird to me, but that's probably because I'm not American. Where I live, we have Primary school, which is Kindergarden (we call it Reception) to 3rd grade, middle school is 4th-7th, then Secondary School, which is 8th-11th, with an added 12th-13th for higher education before we have university as an option.

I've never even heard of middle school including 5th grade. Is it like a private school or religious school? Those sometimes have odd groupings.

I agree, apparently middle school used to be called Junior high school so a 5th grader going to something called Jr high would be really weird. My school system was exploding when I was growing up so many people were moving in so middle school was only 7th and 8th grade. 5th and 6th were called "Intermediate School" I actually think this system worked well because 7th and 8th seemed to be the most volatile time in most people's childhood so keeping them away from younger kids might have been helpful but idk I'm not an expert, I'm sure someone could argue the opposite that isolating them in one school is bad

In my country 1-4 is elementary, 5-10 is middle. Never has been different.

Mine was 7th and 8th grade. 5th and 6th were still elementary.

I agree with you to an extent. That said, after working in multiple elementary schools that include fifth grade, I would say that the fifth graders were often on the cusp in terms of behavior and academic challenges that used to be primarily experienced in the traditional middle grades. I can't give a peer reviewed reason why this is, but my educated guess is that it is caused by puberty happening earlier and earlier, and the incredibly high prevalence of social media use among young tweens and older elementary students.

Turn that logic around on the gap from 5th graders to kindergarten. 11 year olds and 5 year olds in the same building, a much larger gap. Either way what interactions do these kids even have with each other? The only classes that generally mix different grades are in high school. Explain how the 5th graders having basically no interactions with younger or older grades being in middle school or not would somehow change how their 5th grade goes. Either way you're 10-11 years old going through a year of school with whatever problems arise from it. The correct solution on dividing what grade goes to what school is whatever is optimal for the land and buildings the local government has and how to divide it among the schools.

I don't really know what the difference is in your system with middle school vs other schools, but where I live we have grades from 0 - 9 in the same school, 0 where they are being really just a kindergarten, and 9 being where they are ready to get into uni or whatever they chose. So I don't really see how moving the 5th grade changes anything, or how it is such a problem.
