Isn't the point more of a criticism of the double speak that is "buying isn't owning"? Not that they are the same but that it's just as much a reach. The former being a reach in favor of a large corporation, the latter being a reach in favor of the consumer. "If you're going to reach, then we will too," essentially being the idea. At least that's how I always understood it

Yeah, OP seems to lack the ability to read below the surface level of media.

If buying isn't owning - piracy isn't stealing
by Anonymous6 months ago
Is absurd
by Ziemannstevie6 months ago
Maybe explain why you think its so absurd
by Anonymous6 months ago
Unrelated concepts. For me, piracy isn't stealing and that's it. Why would I care about buying isn't owning? It's like: if I like carrots, apples are juicy. Yeah, I get it, people want to say that if you want to rip us off, we will just pirate, or something like this, but the slogan is just overused in all of the unrelated contexts by most people
by Ziemannstevie6 months ago
Huh? Thats an odd formulation of mental gymnastics
by birdie366 months ago
Also you not being able to see the connection is hilarious
by Anonymous6 months ago
Do you know the context for that?
by Wonderful-Tank6 months ago
You get the sentiment, you're just being pedantic.
by Alvena866 months ago
I am, you are right.
by Ziemannstevie6 months ago
You might not agree with it, but the logic behind it is pretty damn obvious whether you agree or not.

I'm shocked you were able to get that username. So close to Joffrey
by Anonymous6 months ago
Oh I tried quite a few things before I found one this close that was open.

A win is a win. Still a bastard tho
by Anonymous6 months ago
Settle down there DeStannis. Everyone knows those bastard claims are desperate lies.

By definition of piracy and stealing, they are 2 separate things however people against pirating will conflate piracy = stealing even though buying software is not really buying a product.
by Anonymous6 months ago
Stealing requires you to take possession of the thing in question. Piracy only requires unauthorized usage of the thing in question. Getting hands on the source code could be counted as stealing and stealing the drive the code is on is definitely stealing, but simply using/distrubuting an unlicensed or unauthorized program is piracy. You don't deprive them of the thing, you use it without permission.
by Anonymous6 months ago
Where does the theft of services fall on your spectrum of loss of "thing" and unauthorized usage?
by Cheap-Independent5366 months ago
Ah wouldnt you be depriving them of said revenue on the usage?
by birdie366 months ago
If legally purchasing something does not entitle you to ownership of said thing, then illegally downloading it is not stealing it. Since no one owns it anyway. But the actual statement you refer to is simply pointing out how ridiculous the phrase "buying isn't owning" is, by saying something equally ridiculous. Reductio ad absurdum

"I myself see piracy as a copyright infringement and a completely ethical way for people of low means to access to things they need…" You contradict yourself so much, this has to have been written by AI. How can you infringe someone's rights ethically? Need is an interesting choice of word. Do you honestly need everything you pirate? I mostly pirate movies and TV shows, occasionally a PC game, but I don't need any of them. If you're going to do it, at least be honest with yourself.
by Anonymous6 months ago
I think that copyright infrigement is not unethical, though it is prohibited in some laws. Especially since it is a crime without a victim.
by Ziemannstevie6 months ago
When you are a pirate or outlaw you make your own rules to suit you needs. Therefore your opinion is wrong.
by skylarjones6 months ago
That sentence is another contestor for non-existent logic slogan.
by Ziemannstevie6 months ago
If piracy is stealing, it's an evil I can live with.
