The novel would only make sense the moment you enter the real world and earn money using your own effort. People used to work when they attended high school back in the 50s and they have no phones or any other means of media entertainment other going to the cinema. Hence the reason why it isn't really relatable to high school students these days.

It insists upon itself

Me either. Wasn't captivating at all

I didn't get it first either when I read it at 15, but now I'm 6 years older and slightly wiser, I gave it another read a few months ago. I enjoyed it. A lot more than I did when I was 15, I actually got it this time around. There were a lot of themes in the book that just went straight over my head as a 15 year old, not so much now.

Ugh. I had to read the thing twice. In high school and middle school. The first time I couldn't follow along with the plot because of how slow paced and flowery everything was. The second time I could follow and hated it because everyone was an asshole.

I don't even know what it is. I randomly say The Great Gatsby every now and then because the name is hilarious. Don't even know where I first heard the name

I moved three times in high school, and at each school that was the year they read The Great Gatsby in high school. And I could not stand it. It is my least favorite book, I think. I understood it, I even agreed with the message, but I could not care about it whatsoever.

I see it's not everyone's cup of tea but I studied it in college with an awesome professor as part of a class called "The Literature of War." It was an amazing perspective on the book and how it grapples with experiences that are just about impossible to articulate. Told beautifully.

I think it's one of those that has themes that connected more with people who were alive or born within a few decades of when it was written. Kinda like of mice and men in the sense it wouldn't feel the same if it set in a different moment but that can also be off-putting if you're not into it.
