+27 Tom Hanks is average at best, amirite?

by Fantastic-Speaker636 6 months ago

Even Tim Allen can do it LOL I'm sure Tim would love to read that.

by Lucky-Coast-9668 6 months ago

If that was written before, it's not there now

by Anonymous 6 months ago

lol, you think Tim Allen can read.

I think he's really tainted his reputation in that last few years, he hasn't made a good movie in a while and keeps trying to do accents for some reason. But his run in the 90s is maybe the best run by any actor ever. Big - sleepless in Seattle - a league of their own - Philadelphia - forest gump - Toy Story - saving private ryan - you've got mail - cast away? Come on, that is an all time run. He can do comedy, drama, he really was the man for a while

Apollo 13

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Yeah but his sex scenes fell short

by mikeprohaska 6 months ago

Ride like the wind, Bullseye!

by Delicious-Amount-282 6 months ago

Not in the last 20 years he hasn't.

by Kautzernathania 6 months ago

Captain Phillips. The final scene where he's in a state of shock from the ordeal is unlike anything else he's done and he delivers that scene brilliantly. And I don't think it's healthy to associate being self-deprecating with being a good person. Plenty of fake people are self-deprecating. And idk, in general he has that James Stewart quality where he plays a warm man on screen and I think that's okay and even a good thing that there is at least 1 star who does that for us. Not everyone should be a Daniel Day Lewis. You kinda expect a certain tone when you turn on a Tom Hanks movie and sometimes that's what I want.

by Alta98 6 months ago

I'm not against your reasoning, but I want to add some clarification. In his instance I feel like his inability to be self deprecating shows an arrogance he doesn't deserve. I don't expect him to make it his personality but I would expect anybody to be capable of it.

by Fantastic-Speaker636 6 months ago

He absolutely carried Cast Away. I can't think of another actor from that era who could've done that role even half as well as Hanks did.

by Ok_Palpitation189 6 months ago

There's a lot of actors that would have nailed it honestly

by Anonymous 6 months ago

I cam think of half a dozen who could have not only nailed but also not cheesed it up like he did and does...I agree with OP...Tom Hanks is tepid at best.

by rosaleeratke 6 months ago

Counterpoint: A volleyball was also in the movie. And if a volleyball can even do it, anyone can do it.

by williamsonjairo 6 months ago

Fits perfectly into his pigeon hole of single character focus. His comparison in that role was an inanimate object that he anthropomorphised. Not hard to one up yourself there.

by Fantastic-Speaker636 6 months ago

Nah he's a great actor, you are wrong

by Stiedemannjeffr 6 months ago

Bro it's been 30 years

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Saving private Ryan he was great in

by General-Basket 6 months ago

Well even if we go mathematically and include his one good role then he still falls into average.

by Fantastic-Speaker636 6 months ago

Well done, it still doesn't make any sense. But at least you are trying to include his whole body of work!

by ansley35 6 months ago

Does being condescending often work for you when you get frustrated in conversation?

by Fantastic-Speaker636 6 months ago

No frustration from my side! It's your opinion, just stated it never made any sense. Pointed out why it didn't make sense. That's all from me!

by ansley35 6 months ago

lol get ratioed

by Anonymous 6 months ago

The Money Pit? The Burbs? Dragnet? Turner and Hooch? I just think Tom Hanks needs to go back to slap-stick comedy where he really shined.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Imagine how many more Oscars (2 so far) he'd win if he were above average.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

His second should have been for Apollo 13, rather than the atrocious Forrest Gump.

by jorgewiza 6 months ago

You make it sound like knowing your own limits and acting within those limits to ensure good performance is bad, what type of take even is that.

by Lavadagrimes 6 months ago

An unpopular one?

by Fantastic-Speaker636 6 months ago

Nothing unpopular with when its just stupidity. You are complaining he does what he thinks he will do great in and accept those roles, its like complaining that someone is driving under the speedlimit instead of over it. Its completely asinine.

by Lavadagrimes 6 months ago

Don't be rude you just have a different opinion

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Nah, they called out a flaw in their reasoning. That isn't just a difference of opinion, and they're kind of right.

by Sea_Direction 6 months ago

"Stupidity" is rude

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Your argument is only valid if we agree he is 'great' in those roles rather than merely good by lack of comparison, which is my original point. I'm afraid your argument of speed limits is the only asinine point as it isn't a comparable metaphor. In fact, it backs up my argument; most of us can drive well under a speed limit, so none of us should be praised for doing well at it.

by Fantastic-Speaker636 6 months ago

Totally agree...he is just an overwrought ham. Definitely overrated.

by rosaleeratke 6 months ago

He's charismatic and charming. Often that's enough. I don't think there's anyone else who can do exactly what he does; he's sort of a one man niche. Some of his performances could have probably been pulled off by any competent comedic actor. But his performances in "Big," "Saving Private Ryan," "Toy Story," "Philadelphia," "Forrest Gump," are essential Hanks. It's impossible to imagine anyone else in those roles, at least for me.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Go watch The Burbs and then come back and apologize.

by Every_Dog8439 6 months ago

Watch him in the SNL skit Black Jeopardy. Genius.

by Vadawalsh 6 months ago

I think he's definitely above average but receives praise as if he's one of the greatest ever. It's like Taylor Swift where I've always enjoyed her music, but the way some of her fandom sees her is just absurd to me.

by ElectronicRecord 6 months ago

He knocked it out of the park with Mister Rogers, too, I reckon. And he's a significant part of the reason why Forrest Gump is one of the most epic movies of all time.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Yeah, you're wrong, but it's a free country.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

tbh it's the movies he's in that are great not his acting

by AdmirableTicket 6 months ago

I didn't used to be of this opinion, but lately I tend to agree. His prime finished after Captain Philips, imo.

by Kautzernathania 6 months ago

The only way to approach this is to ask a level-setting question: Give me 5 actors who you consider ABOVE average. Once we have that point of comparison we can probably start to figure out why your opinion is so insane.

by Gutmannnadia 6 months ago

Gary Oldman Kenneth Brannagh Daniel Day Lewis Anthony Hopkins Marlon Brando To name just a few

by Fantastic-Speaker636 6 months ago

Hanks' charm and charisma comes off as sincere and he makes it look way easier than it is

by Anonymous 6 months ago

Why does he seem like a real creepy ass dude? Is it just me that is wierded the hell out if he is giving an interview or whatever. Sure he a good actor… but he seems like a psychopath.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

This is a very weak take.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

The man entertained me for like 2 hours with nothing but some boxes and a volleyball.

by Anonymous 6 months ago

He falls into a category I would call "comfort food" actors. It's not 5-star dining, but it's something simple that you grew up on and know. Chris Pratt is similar: he's not exactly a great actor, but he's generally likable and does a good job with what he's given.

by jason88 6 months ago

Chris Pratt is much worse than Hanks

by Enough-Honey-5788 6 months ago

Ya...and not watchable at all and Tom Hanks sucks .
