+42 An online, long-distance relationship where you have never seen each other in person isn't a real relationship, amirite?

by Walkertamia 4 months ago

I don't honestly think this should be that unpopular I concur

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I did online "relationships" back when I was a teenager. None of them ever worked out. I don't partake in them anymore. Every time I see someone talk about their online relationship and how in love they are I have to bite my tongue.

Sure it's a relationship. But is it romantic? There's definitely a ceiling for people who have never actually met or seen each other irl . I think this perspective is inclusive but also kind of cheapens what true connection is

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Yes, it can be. I don't see why not. I've had online friends that hold a closer bond to me than some of my closest friends in my city. I don't see why a romantic relationship can't be achieved.

I'm just not buyin it. No amount of texting or FaceTime can replicate without at least some physical interaction

I'm married to what once was an online relationship. We have a toddler son together and have been married for almost 4 years so not old but so far we're good.

I've seen it work. Friend online dated her gaming buddy in Brazil before they finally met and moved in together 5 years later when they weren't broke. I'm sure their relationship is stronger now that it is "real," but I can tell those two loved eachother. You are kind of right though, I've seen lots of online relationships fail, I'd say the vast majority of them do. Seeing everyone else around you in a conventional relationship probably eats away at yours.

This isn't unpopular. At least I hope. To those that are in this type of relationship and are satisfied I applaud you

by Efficient-Fudge4762 4 months ago

They're generally not satisfied, they just view it as better than being alone, which it probably is in the short term.

Online dating is some scary stuff. You think your out here dating a Vanessa when the whole time you're dating a 43 year old janitor named Clarence

by Anonymous 4 months ago

You think this is Vanessa, her real name's Clarence. And Clarence parents have a real nice marriage.

Hasn't been the case since webcams became nearly ubiquitous in cell phones.

You'd be suprised brother

Ai isn't that good yet, the only other way would be having a separate girl get in on the catfishing. Can it happen? Sure, but really only if you put on your horse blinders.

Haha reminded me of when I was a GM for the popular game PokeMMO. Two staff members were dating for a long time, months at least, she was American and he was British. As I was rolling off the project, she added me on Facebook, and the person she was married to definitely wasn't the other staff member. She had several kids and recent pictures with the other guy too. I never talked to her again - mostly because I didn't have a reason to.

Not unpopular, i believe most people think this way

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Correct. It requires human interaction

2 business partners have a relationship. siblings have a relationship. doctors and patients have a relationship. What is a "real" relationship?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Who are you to say what a real relationship is or isn't? It's real to them, it's someone they have a connection with. This is something very lonely people do. We don't need to dogpile on them and tell them how much their lives suck. They already feel generally unhappy, almost universally I would imagine. It is a real relationship, it just isn't one that looks like yours.

by garfield47 4 months ago

Why not? Some couples who see each other every day pretty much live completely separate lives

by Anonymous 4 months ago

At least they see each other you kinda need physical contact to make a relationship work I've honestly never heard of a purly online relationship ever working

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I don't think this is something discussed enough to know what most people think. I feel the same way, and would imagine that's common. I've always had a somewhat related belief that if you are engaged for more than 6 months and haven't set a date you aren't truly engaged.

by Rowland10 4 months ago

I'm genuinely curious about your engagement belief. Would you mind elaborating?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Maybe specify what type of relationship you are talking about, there are many more than just romantic/ sexual. E.g its perfectly acceptable to consider someone you met online only as a friend. That's still a relationship.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I've had a friendship for 3 years where we've never met but I couldn't imagine anything sexual or romantic being sustained that long with no real life contact. And even if I were on the fence, binging Catfish every time I'm sick would've tipped me anyway 😂

Ohhhh I wish you could meet my girlfriend, my girlfriend who lives in Canada She couldn't be sweeter I wish you could meet her My girlfriend who lives in Canada! Her name is Alberta She live in Vancouver She cooks like my mother And sucks like a Hoover I e-mail her every single day Just to make sure that everything's okay It's a pity she lives so far away, in Canada! Last week she was here, but she had the flu

by Warm-Ideal-5610 4 months ago

Not sure if call your's a real relationship either . See what I did there . Nobody cares why you think about their relationships

by Prior_Two6529 4 months ago

I can see what you're saying, because there are instances where people will meet someone on a dating app and their texting is great but once they meet it's 0 chemistry. So in person chemistry is completely up in the air as an unknown. But I met my boyfriend online, we started being a couple before we met, we were confident we would get along. Spent the entire summer and month of December-january together and happy to say we have even more chemistry in person (although, duh hehehe)
