I've never had the inclination to write it as 1 word, but I could see it should work that way. Like I couldn't tell you why not "eachother" but we have: sometimes, something, anybody, itself, etc.

I actually agree with this. "each other" sounds different in intonation whenever I read it compared to "eachother". Even though the former is almost universally considered correct, it reminds me of old books where you'd see things like: to-day, to-gether, no body, extra-ordinary, etc. In its usage it's always treated as a single world and it's frequent enough that it just makes sense to delete that space.
