+43 Tofu is really not that bad. amirite?

by Doylechadd 5 months ago

try freezing the tofu. it will completely change the texture, and makes it way better for soaking up sauces

by Fun-Set8258 5 months ago

To elaborate, press, freeze, press again. It's the best.

by ayladubuque 5 months ago

pressed tofu is incredible, immediate textural improvement

by Robelkorey 5 months ago

I love to press, fry for a couple min, then toss in the over for 15 to 20 more min, it gets so crispy I love it

by Anonymous 5 months ago

All of Asia goes: What?

by Predovicdwight 5 months ago

They eat it in meat dishes in China and Taiwan, like with ground pork. It's good!

by Anonymous 5 months ago

Crispy tofu isn't just not bad, it's awesome!

by Anonymous 5 months ago

It can actually be a totally fine replacement for meat in certain situations

by Anonymous 5 months ago

I tend to prefer dark or red meat whenever I'm cooking but I'll use tofu as a replacement if I'm particularly broke. Just made a stir-fry with tofu and veggies and it turned out pretty good.

by Doylechadd 5 months ago

Once I'd watched a video where someone made tofu out of beans that weren't soybeans, and I realized how normal it was. It's basically cheese made out of soybean milk and pressed into a mold. If anything, it's less gross since there's no bacteria involved. I'm also into anime, manga, and manhwa - turns out Asian people put tofu in a lot of things. I'm still in the process of figuring out how to make it taste good though. I burnt the fried tofu puffs and they tasted like burnt croutons, and when I oven-baked it, it tasted like really plain scrambled eggs. I haven't tried miso soup or blending it in a smoothie. I also haven't tried boiling it either. Haven't done agedashi tofu or mapo tofu. So my tofu journey continues.

by BusinessCharming 5 months ago

Freeze it, then thaw, cube, and put into soup.

by Gislasonebba 5 months ago

It's fascinating. I'm also Chinese have it at least once or twice a week so it's a totally normal thing, but I can see why people would think it's weird if they didn't grow up eating it I guess.

by gibsonfoster 4 months ago

I feel like the people who don't like it often don't press it, which makes the texture gross. If they'd get a tofu press I think they'd be more inclined to enjoy.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I'd recommend going with extra firm tofu and popping it in a press for at least 30 minutes. If you're going to pan fry it, dredge it in a bit of cornstarch first and it gives it a lovely crisp!

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Wok fried tofu is pretty good.

by Rusty49 4 months ago

Soft tofu in miso soup isn't even reminiscent of meat and it's so good.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Is this an unpopular opinion? I love tofu!

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Ma Po Tofu is one of my favorite dishes (when properly cooked).

by Signal_Result7689 4 months ago

I can't get behind the texture brother boi

by Personal_Yellow3670 4 months ago

You need to freeze it, then thaw and press it to get more water out, then air fry it

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Hmmm maybe I'll try that

by Personal_Yellow3670 4 months ago

Too much work. Let's be serious.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Press it with paper towels to absorb the moisture for a long time (at least a couple hours) then pan fry it or bake it on high heat. It's chewy and soooo yummy!

by Imedhurst 4 months ago

I also hate the texture. I hate lots of foods with similar textures. I like beans and mushrooms and don't eat meat all the time. My dislike of tofu has nothing to do with it not being meat. And making it firmer is not helpful, the only tofu I've found tolerable is the curds in kimchijjigae.

by Kuvalispriscill 4 months ago

Only great in Thai food

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Vietnamese, Korean food

by Adventurous-Sand7236 4 months ago

Exactly! You have to use firm tofu, press it, dry it ,and fry it . Soft tofu is used for desserts and shakes.

by Quigleybenton 4 months ago

i like cooking it with soy sauce and peas and eating it with rice. i like the texture and it's easy.

by vivienneokon 4 months ago

I prefer tofu lettuce wraps over the chicken, and I don't mind it in hot & sour soup, but that's probably the only tofu things I've tried.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Great for protein, not a vegan or vegetarian but I love pressed and fried or baked tofu

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I really wish I liked it consistently, I just don't

by Internal_Stop1990 4 months ago

I love Tofu. I had a vegetarian friend from Africa one time tell me they didn't like tofu. I was really baffled since Tofu is like a major staple for vegetarians. He said it's cuz it's flavourless and bland, but he never actually tried to do anything with it besides frying it and adding salt. Made him try Agedeshi Tofu, he loved it and after that asked for more tofu dishes to try. My favourite is just deep-fried firm tofu, with sweet soy sauce and fried shallots.

by akeem43 4 months ago

I cook it in my ramen to add extra protein when I don't feel like making chicken. Some weirdos get weird about tofu being estrogenic even though there is no proof that's how it interacts with the body. I squat more than 95% of those weirdos so they can cry about it. Imagine being afraid that tofu will make you weak.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

It's not that bad, but it's also not that good. It's not the sort of thing I would seek out. Like if you can have your dish with chicken or with tofu, there is never a time when I would choose tofu over chicken or another meat.

by Sammiemetz 4 months ago

There's all sorts of ways to make tofu great. Tofu dishes that are great? Mapo Tofu, Korean Soon Tofu soup. Tofu scramble. Chinese hot and sour soup. But IMHO fried tofu is nasty. It's the silky stuff that's good.

by Competitive-You 4 months ago

Not a vegan or anything. I eat everything. Bacon. Meats. Also vegan food. I love good vegan food. And I used to use tofu a lot. In stir fries.

by hipolito71 4 months ago

Personally I can't stand the texture of tofu (haven't found a recipe that changes it enough for me to not start gagging) but other than that it's fine.

by EngineInevitable 4 months ago

Tofu is awesome, it's even better when it's delivered to you by drift racers.

by Super-Cable 4 months ago

I love tofu in a spicy soup to absorb the spiciness Other than that I don't eat it

by Anonymous 4 months ago

spicy korean tofu soup is amazing

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I love tofu, but I was never successful with it when I was a vegetarian. It never turned out right so I just avoided it. ( I reincorporated meat years ago, so idk if it was me or the tofu back then- I'm a good cook but my tofu dishes were so bad.) My sibling prepares dishes with tofu quite often and they are amazing and yummy. I'm glad I got to experience it the "right" way!

by dianna00 4 months ago

Wait so people think tofu is vegetarian food that replaces meat? We eat tofu just because it's delicious lol

by Low_Remote 4 months ago

I love tofu, it's so versatile

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Funny enough, i got into tofu recently because a bbq deli i live by had a po'boy tofu sandwich and it was so freaking good! I put it in just about everything now

by Fun_Yogurtcloset 4 months ago

Tofu is great. It doesn't have much flavor on its own but pair it with some garlic, spices or a nice sauce and you're in heaven. A personal favorite is to cube the (extra firm) tofu, dip in whisked egg, then add it to a mixture of bread crumbs, nutritional yeast, salt, pepper and minced garlic. Then add it to a hot oiled pan (avocado oil is the best) and crisp it up.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Tofu is only a bland delivery mechanism of the flavoring you add. It, by itself, is a mashed bean. Crisping it up helps simulate a slight crunch of what you really wanted to eat. I've tried cooking it so many ways, but mostly disappointed. Oh, I should have prefaced with IMHO.

by Roberto17 4 months ago

This is only unpopular to people who primarily eat Western diets and associate tofu with blandness and veganism, no? As opposed to the entirety of East and Southeast Asia (maybe South Asia too) where tofu is a staple and can be prepared in probably dozens or hundreds of ways. As an Asian American who lives in a diverse city, I rarely hear people say they dislike tofu.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

This is a very western notion of an unpopular opinion.

by Efficient_Garage_423 4 months ago

I used to chop it up mix it with berries, dates and tahini as a little snack.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

This is an unpopular opinion? Maybe among uncultured white people lol. I don't believe people when they say they don't like tofu. I think most haven't tried enough tofu before arriving to that conclusion. It's like saying you don't like potato. Way too many different types and ways to prepare it, everyone is bound to find something they like.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I love tofu personally, to the point where I could happily eat it plain. People are wrong when they say it has no flavor; it does indeed have a flavor, that of soy, it's not not very strong and it's very easy to mask with other things.

by Informal-Leader-6665 4 months ago

The chewing tofu is gross but the slimy tofu that you can slurp is god tier

by CarobEven 4 months ago

I love tofu if it's done right, especially if it's in pad Thai. I prefer that as my choice in pad Thai over anything else. So delicious!

by Anonymous 4 months ago

My laksa sponge

by Anonymous 4 months ago

tofu is amazing

by gwenschuppe 4 months ago

No, the texture of it when it's crispy on the outside is actually really amazing! I'm not even a vegetarian anymore but sometimes I just crave crispy tofu.

by Normal-Ease 4 months ago

I agree. I'm not vegan or vegetarian, but I love it in Pad Thai. I also recently had a ham, cheese & tofu egg bagel and it was surprisingly good. 😋

by PenNo 4 months ago

Hear me out: crispy tofu instead of croutons on Caesar salad. You're welcome.

by Samir91 4 months ago

100% agree, it's great if you make it right and don't expect it to be meat. And there are a bunch of ways to make it right! You can leave it soft like eggs and have it with something more firm or crunchy (kung pao tofu with peanuts on rice), or slice and fry it, or shred, dry, and air fry it to make it more crunchy/chewy, or even blend it to add protein to a more liquidy dish like chili or curry. It's incredibly versatile, but sadly people just go "Ew it's not like chicken" and give up. They don't know what they're missing.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Billions of people eat tofu regularly. This is not remotely unpopular

by Feeling_Doughnut 4 months ago

I love tofu.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I make and enjoy tofu often now but it took some getting used to. I can completely understand not liking it. On its own it tastes like an industrial chemical.

by Illustrious_Job_5752 4 months ago

Yea its not

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I love it. I press it for a couple of days to wring out excess moisture. I love to soak it with soy, ginger, garlic, and sometimes onions. Fry it up and serve on a bed of rice.

by Substantial-War 4 months ago

Nobody dislikes tofu, people dislike it as a replacement to meat. Supplementary to meat it's amazing, seafood laksa tofu is my favourite.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Tofu is good until people try to fry it and add spices to it to mimic meat. At that point, you're trying too hard and tofu will never hit that mark. If you do nothing with the tofu and stir fry it with some fish, mushrooms, and rice then it tastes amazing

by RockPrestigious8856 4 months ago

Entirely incorrect.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I believe that food is best enjoyed when it feeds the soul as well as the body. If the soul wants spices, I will give it spices.

by Doylechadd 4 months ago

Tofu sucks thanks to its texture.
